4 Reviews of the Ranch

By: Raf48  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2004   Rating:

I have just bought this tent second hand, to use with a wood burning stove in the kitchen recess. I can't add much to what has already been posted, but would like to point out a potential problem with the frame. If yours like mine is not marked for assembly, the end roof poles can be fitted either way round, but it should be noted that the joints should be assembled with the shorter side connected to the leg poles, and the longer side to the roof sections. It will work either way, but the roof won't line up with the reinforcing, and the front and back panels are over stretched. I am really pleased with it, and it did feel secure in the strong wind when I used it. The date is a guess, as I had to give one to post this review.

This was our family frame tent from 1991 for 16 years! (Went to the campsite in the sky 3 years ago after 'going porous' during the heaviest rain we ever experienced) Great for 2 adults / 2 children, with plenty of strength in the frame for hanging coats, tidy units, larders etc. (Not possible with lightweight hoop pole designs) The Ranch also had a dedicated cooking extension at the rear of the living space. The most repaired parts of this tent were the 4 bottom corner guy attachments, which were trip hazards for the 'unwary'. (ie, folks who were relaxed after a tincture or two :))

Shame it is discontinued, I would definitely grab another one of these if it came up for sale.

Have had this tent for a few years now. We use it when we're away for a week as it is more substantial and has an in-built cooking area. The downside is the size and weight of the canvas and poles - so we prefer a small tunnel tent for weekends. One thing to watch out for is that the sides are very shallow at the ends of the sleeping areas - the lower part of the sides of the outer tent are made of PVC so you wont get leaks by touching the sides, but there is a risk of children touching the inner tent against the roof as it is so low down.

Only just acquired this one 2nd hand and it is just great. Centre of tent is living area with 2 bedrooms opposite each other. It has a jut out section at the back for the kitchen area. There was no ground sheet for the central living area but I already had one anyway and used this folded over. I found this tent more cozy and draughtproof that my older cottage style one. I do think this one is going to outlast any of those flimsy nylon tents.

Manufacturer's Description

The manufacturer has advised that this model has been discontinued.

Vis a Vis style tent with added features. The style is known as Vis a Vis because the inner tents face each other. The Ranch is not technically a frame tent although it does have a small frame in the centre. Maximum privacy is available because the large living area, which has an extended kitchen area to the rear, separates the inner tents. The packed size of the Ranch is considerably smaller than a frame tent making it ideal for touring but it provides spacious accommodation when pitched. Have yourself a break, down on the Ranch.
