Big-hitting attractions in this corner of Norfolk include Sandringham Estate (25 minutes drive), where you can make like the royals by touring Sandringham House, exploring the lavishly planted gardens and taking afternoon tea in the really-rather-posh cafe. Norman-era Ely Cathedral (45 minutes) also draws the crowds with its ornate architecture.
To blow away any cobwebs, head for Heacham (35 minutes) for bracing walks on the Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Path or a potter on the sandy beach. Big-sister resort Hunstanton (40 minutes) is a busier spot, with amusement arcades and fairground rides on the lively promenade.
Chances are younger kids will adore an afternoon cuddling ponies and romping on the climbing frames at Church Farm - Stow Bardolph (25 minutes), while the buggy safaris at Watatunga Wildlife Reserve (20 minutes) are also popular for trails leading past water buffalo and all manner of rare deer breeds roaming free on grassland. There are owls and peacocks at Norfolk Lavender - where you can also pick up souvenir plants and tour the extensive gardens
