From junction 36 on M6 take the A590 towards Barrow in Furness, after 20 miles turn onto the A5092 towards Broughton in Furness, continue for 4 miles then half a mile past Gawthwaite on the top of the hill turn right for Woodland (place name)over a cattle grid. After 1.7 miles turn right then fork immediately left for Birchbank.

Coniston Water is 5 miles with the Gondola steam boat, several launches, boats to hire windsurfing and other outdoor pursuits at Coniston village. The Market town of Ulverston is only 7 miles for shopping and services and there is South Lakes Wild Animal Park for the children. Windermere and Grizedale Forest are half and hours drive and there are several historic houses, Beatrix Potter attractions and two steam railways in the area.
