My wife and I are very fond of touring holidays but we tend to hire static caravan parks rather than hotels, as we like the extra space and, of course, it usually works out much cheaper.
Our work means that very often we cannot get time off when we want, so booking for late September seemed a bit of a gamble because the weather starts to deteriorate and the days are notably shorter.
Tarka is quite a drive from home (Sunderland) but we thought it looked a great base to continue from where we left off last year, at Doniford (Somerset). We believe that it is always worth paying extra for a static with double glazing and central heating, for bookings earlier and later in the year. First off, Tarka staff are very helpful and we received the usual call from reception a week before our holiday.
Perhaps the most useful disclosure, was that the major supermarkets all deliver to the site, which is fairly compact. Finding the site is very easy and reception has ample parking. Staff dispensed with sign in very efficiently and followed up next morning by sending the accommodation officer to check we were happy. We had selected a platinum van, which did not disappoint. We discovered it was a sub-let managed by Park Holidays, which explained the slightly unusual layout which incorporated 2 bedrooms each with double bed.
The furniture was a cut above usual and there was plenty of equipment, including a dishwasher, although the washing machine was not plumbed in (site policy, we learned). Tarka is a great base for Barnstaple, which has a bustling town centre with good quality shops plus the Pannier Market. There is cheap all day parking too.
We loved Tarka's location: Lynton and Lynmouth are a nearby, as is Exmoor and Lorna Doone country. This is a spectacular drive, if somewhat hilly. We loved the Lynton & Barnstaple steam railway which also operates the cliff railway linking Lynton to Lynmouth.
Visitors to Tarka are spoiled for beach options: Saunton Croyde are standout locations but the former has a course for serious golfers. We visited the carriage museum at Arlington Court (NT) but Heddon Valley is a good walk down to the sea. We ventured further afield also, visiting Clovelly and Lyme Regis (combined with a visit to the wildlife park at Axe Valley).
Tarka is a quiet site: we did not miss a clubhouse, or on site shop. There is no food available on-site but there are many options locally but mostly, we prepared our own food. There were no children on site when we stayed but dog walkers were catered for with a dedicated exercise yard. Talking of exercise, don't miss the Tarka Trail itself - views of the river estuary are spectacular.
We would go back again definitely. The only minor quibble we had was exiting the park: the main road is quite busy and care must be taken when joining, as the view is not ideal.

Please note that Tarka Holiday Park has now been taken over by Park Holidays UK Ltd. It no longer caters for touring caravans, tents or motorhomes. It now only has holiday homes for sale, and holiday homes for rent.

Stayed in a basic budget caravan over whitsun and was a little wary as this was the only one that was available as a last minute booking. The gentleman I spoke to stressed that as pets had been allowed in this caravan there would be a smell of dogs but it would be clean. As we entered the caravan this was not evident at all, although it was a little worn it was by far the cleanest caravan I have stayed in. Although I have stayed many times in the larger more well known holiday camps in better grades of caravan they did not compare to the cleanliness of this caravan and will not hesitate to return to this site.

Having visited this site last year for a few days we decided to return for our main family holiday this year. We expected a shop, and somewhere we could eat, as we found last year and is still advertised on their website, however this is no longer available.
The site last year was family friendly with a little bit of entertainment (great for rainy evenings) but not too loud/noisy and good food.
If I had expected the basics this site is good, with clean toilets and nice hot showers. The tap in the camping field didn't work.
Play area is good for the children, but the customer service at the site and the website needs to be improved. We left after 3 nights, disappointed after our stay there last year.

We stayed here in our camper van on the 2nd bank holiday weekend in May and we were given a pitch in D field. The lady in reception warned us that they hadn’t been able to cut the grass, I wasn’t too bothered until I arrived at our pitch and saw that the seed heads on the grass were 6 to 8 inches long – a complete pain when it rained on the Monday.
The 3 toilets and 2 showers were very clean until the shear volume of people using meant that they could have done with being cleaned more often. There was a laundry which had one sink. Usually on camp sites there are separate washing up facilities, but we couldn't find any here and didn’t fancy washing our dishes in a sink in the laundry, (ie where people may have washed their smalls) as everyone else seemed to be doing.
On our second day when everyone else turned up it was extremely cramped with no room whatsoever between pitches, pitch numbers were indicated, but the edges weren’t clear in the long grass. They also opened up some portable cabin toilets and showers in D field, but the showers had nowhere to put your stuff or change, looking at this set up we decided to go without, also low pressure on the portable cabin toilets meant they didn’t flush too well…. Also quite grubby, due again to volume of use.
A lot of this wouldn’t be so off putting to us had we not paid high season prices at £22.50 per night for 2 people. We used the Tarka trail which was what we primarily camped here for, but we did have to cross the duel carriageway and cycle along it before getting off road.
There is a grass verge you can walk along but when we were there the grass was waist high so we had no choice but to cycle on the road. We didn’t use the club or site facilities so can’t comment.
The owners were very nice, so I almost don’t like to complain, however, we have camped all over the place for many years now and we felt this was expensive.

We spent a week in the E field of the campsite. When we arrived the staff were very friendly and welcoming, however parking outside the reception meant I was blocking the entrance/exit of the site - might have been useful to have a parking area
The pitch was very small - it literally was wide enough for the caravan and the awning, the pitch is marked out; as a result, the side of our caravan was less than 3ft from next doors awning.
The dog walk was very limited; the pitch and putt which is advertised is bordering on laughable - my two sons couldn't find the holes, unsure where to start from and all this being played in the same field as the crazy golf (which was fine for under 8's = basic).
We didn't use the play are but it looked great and was always busy. The toilets/shower block were, at best, OK; very basic but clean.
The shop could be used in an emergency with the usual basic provisions. We didn't use the bike hire but the price seemed OK. The games room which should be called the Arcade, was small and dated. The bar offered a really good 'real ale' and good selection of lagers and ciders too. We didn't eat there so unable to comment on the quality of the food, what we saw looked OK.
In the main, the site was OK, just needs a freshen up. It is well situated for facilities within the local area; pubs (Tarka Inn - excellent food), beaches/towns etc including good fish and chip shop and chinese etc.
If you don't mind it basic, a little outdated, but cheap (although not that cheap) and cheerful - then this site would suit you.

We have just returned home after spending 2 glorious weeks at Tarka Holiday Park, when we arrived we were met by a very friendly woman on the Saturday morning. That night we went into the Tarka Waterfall club/restaurant where we were warmly greeted by the barman who told us his name, we looked at the menu and we both decided to order the spicy beef curry with naan breads. If, like me, you like a curry that bites back then this is for you, my wife couldn't eat it all there was so much, in fact in the 2 weeks we were there I think we tried nearly everything on the menu and puddings list.
The chef is a very nice young lady and all of the puddings are her own creations, her fish and chips are to die for the batter is so light & crispy we have never had anything like it from our local chippy.
The site itself is very well maintained, the toilets and showers are spotlessly clean, there is a nice little play area for the children and a crazy golf area, there is also a nice little amusement arcade alongside the bar, the reception/shop is nicely stocked.
There is a sign which we found amusing which reads, caution freerange children and animals, you are more than likely to be visited by the free roaming cockerels and their ladies which we did not mind in the least. The A361 can be a bit of a worry if like us you have never been there before especially with a caravan on the back.
We enjoyed this site so much we are going back again in 2011

Having a few days break here. Very handy site, between Barnstaple (lovely for shopping - just like town centres used to be with wonderful covered market) and the coastal resorts of Saunton / Croyde / Woolacombe. Bus stops right outside - on the dual carriageway as previously mentioned so you need to keep your wits about you especially with children.
The village of Braunton is very close and has a good variety of restaurants / pubs / award winning Fish & Chip shop / chinese takeaway. We tried most and have no complaints at all. Somerfield supermarket less than a mile towards Barnstaple and new Tesco supermarket in Braunton too.
The Tarka trail cycling/walking track, which was the old railway line, is close too and the Tarka Inn (steak house type establishment - but good value for money) is 10 minutes walk along the track and has a lovely garden with a sensational view of the Taw estuary.
We didn't find the traffic noise from the busy road a problem at all.
One problem I have to mention though is that there is what appears to be a sewage treatment site hidden behind trees fairly close. This is only a guess mind but there was a very a distinct whiff around for a couple of days that gave the game away!
We didn't use the site bar but it seemed busy and we heard no complaints about it at all.
Would certainly return.

The camping field was well looked after, it was nice ground to pitch your tent on! The showers and toilets were well maintained, they were cleaned 3 times a day, and were very clean.
The shop was quite well stocked, it had the essentials.
The site is in between Barnstaple and Braunton, very easy to get to either town. It is also right on the Tarka trail, so ideal for cycling.
The site is situated on a dual carriageway though, however this did not bother us.
The rates were what you would expect for a campsite of this calibre, £18 a night for the two of us.
They even had a separate dog walking area and a playground for children, so are family orientated.
We did enjoy it here, we saw plenty of wildlife and would recommend the site to others.

We passed through here on the Coast to Coast cycle route on the Easter long weekend. Although we were late, the owners were really friendly and welcoming.
The campsite was a nice, green field and quite empty of tents. The showers were good, clean and warm.
We ate on site because we only had our bicycles and couldn't be bothered to find somewhere else to go. The food was as you'd probably expect at a family holiday park, but edible. We were then entertained with a kids disco and some dads doing daggy dancing - hilarious.
Overall, nice family orientated campsite with good facilities.
