 We've been coming here since the '80s, as we love the beach, the views from the grass area & the coastal path to Rockcliffe & Kippford. We stopped coming when our previous dog swam after sea birds and almost got swept away in the falling tide: this is not a beach for swimming; and check the tide times before walking far out, as people are regularly cut off by the incoming tide.
I don't know if we'll come back again because the site is now out-dated and hugely over-priced for what it offers. We're paying £25 pn for better-equipped sites in Dumfries & Galloway, so the £37 pn including EHU (plus £3 for the new dog) means Gillespie Leisure is charging £12 for those views, or charging CCC Club prices for Certificated Site facilities. Cheaper to stop for the day in the beach car park and pay £5.
Reception closes at 5:00, you must phone if you're arriving later because the wardens give you the code for the barrier & tell you your pitch number if you didn't request a specific one. The shop sells buckets & spades, not bread & milk, so we got the bus into Dumfries for those (every 2 hours). Free Wi-Fi.
The hardstands are surrounded by statics & trees, so their sea views are limited and they're shaded in the evening - better to ask for a grass pitch with EHU, though there are rabbit droppings and rabbit holes absolutely everywhere. There is no "camp kitchen" for people in tents to get out of the rain or charge their phones, and they have the longest trek to the toilets and pot wash.
No recycling. One water tap is in the grass in the the middle of the hardstand area, the other tap by the timber pods is easier to reach. The grey water drain is below these taps, so you'll need a bucket or canister if you're staying more than a few days. Given the high fees, you'd now expect a drive-over drain & accessible tap (motorhome service area).
Facilities: the stairs & cobbled ramps down to the toilet block have no handrail; sinks are clean, but no modesty cubicles (luckily I wasn't having a strip wash when a male warden opened the door to check if he could come in to clean); 2 of the 3 (free) showers flooded outside the cubicles. And unlike every other Scottish site we've been to, there was no "period dignity" box - "The Period Products (Free Provision)(Scotland) Act gives women the right to free products whenever we need them: even the £25 sites provide them.
Gillespie Leisure own three other sites, they need to invest in this one - the fact that it was more than half empty at the weekend in sunny weather should ring alarm bells.

Nice friendly site when I was there but way over priced,
Ok it has beach access but really no scenic views when pitched up as you are surrounded by static caravans.
Facilities standard.
Booking done through a central office but receptionist at site friendly and help.

A find site, well situated for our visit to this part of the Scottish coast. The site was very quiet when we arrived at the start of the week. Family groups and occupants of the glamping pods arrived at the weekend.
The tent area was very well-cropped by the multitude of rabbits roaming the site, but we did find the ground hard going for the many pegs of our canvas tent at the edge of the site overlooking the heather separating the site from the beach.
It was a moderate trek to the facilities, in the next field situated amidst the static homes. Plenty of hot water in the well-maintained showers (which were- pleasantly - unmetered) and washing-up facilities around the back.
Quick access to the very fine beach, although the very shallow sloping coast of this part of the Solway Firth makes sea swimming pretty unrealistic!
We mostly catered from the well-stocked Co-op in Dalbeattie, on our returns from car trips along the coast.

My first impression of this site was "How many rabbits?!" Our dog was equally impressed. Be aware if you have a prey focused dog.
Check in was quick and friendly. The shop has lots of beach stuff and snacks and ice cream and such. If you want groceries there is a village shop about a mile or so to the West up the A710 at Colvend.
The site was and grassy with the grass kept rabbit-eaten short. No need for rock pegs here. There are hard standing pitches for caravans and campers.
There is direct access to the beach and lots of space for your canine companion to run free away from those rabbits.
The facilities block tucked away amongst some statics, is clean but the water was just barely warm all day. I don't appreciate a cold shower and washing up was a challenge.
Rabbits were not the only critters around. Not surprisingly there was at least one fox and evidence of badgers. We also saw a greater spotted woodpecker pecking at the turf with the bunnies.

Just came back from a 7 day stay at sandy hills campsite, great location views were stunning across the bay, early morning and last thing at night,
Plenty of walks along the beaches that were made up of soft sands and millions of cockle shells, there are woodland area to walk which my dog loved,
On site the staff were very friendly and helpful nothing was a bother,
Shower and toilet facilities were cleaned regularly though shower cubicles were a bit small,
Still a great weeks stay and definitely going back next year

What a great location, our pitch was situated between a stream behind the caravan and the solway in front.
This area seemed to have its own micro climate, tucked away behind a hill, which protected the area from any wind which seemed to blow in from a westerly direction.
The facilities on site were a little tired and are in need of updating, however they were reasonably clean and adequate. Locally there was a pub just 10 minutes walk away and a golf course just along the road.
There are also some great walks with the coastal path passing right by the site. Would definitely book this site again.

This site is almost on the beach yet still sheltered and secluded, beautiful location. Perfect for beach strolls and great if you are into sea sports/activities on the very safe beach.
Toilet Shower facilities are fine but not cleaned as often as they should be.
Managers who also run a public well stocked beach shop are very friendly and helpful.
Booking was not simple and you have to persevere on the phone, but worth it.
Would visit again and some campers I met were repeat visitors used this site every year or many times during the season.
Highly recommended.

Loved this site.
Checked campsite reviews for a quick few days away with our son and we were absolutely delighted on arrival!
Perfect tent pitch with views across the beautiful beach and sea.
Mix of couples, singles, families and friends but everyone friendly, respectful and quiet.
Slightly dearer per night but not too bad and worth it.
Friendly staff, shop, facilities very clean and adequate, grounds well maintained.
We'll be back!

The campsite is in a lovely location next to the beach. Lovely for walks.
The shower blocks were clean but needed updated! There were only 2 showers which isn't enough for size of site!
I think like many sites they are expensive for what you get.

As others have said this site is located right on a great sandy beach and beautiful coastline. We booked through the main office having had an unplanned move from a bad site earlier in the day.
The welcome was great and we were shown two possible pitches, we chose the one right on the beach. The owners are helpful and available.
Definitely a very nice site however it dropped a point in my opinion for a couple of inconvenient items. The main one being no service point for motorhomes, our rental had no waste or water container other than the built-in tanks.
Grey water had to be collected in a bucket and disposed of at the fresh water point. For fresh water we had to drive between other units to get close to a tap (only two fresh water points on the site).
The second point, no curtain in the showers. Even very careful positioning of clothes couldn't keep them dry.
Having said all that we would definitely recommend this site and would plan to return in future.
