Sandyhills is a lovely site on a fabulous beach. However they seem to have taken advantage of the Covid situation by still charging full price for the campsite (£27) with no facilities open. They were lacking in sanitising facilities around taps.
Grey waste disposal was not clear and we saw people emptying grey waste and flushing the containers under the fresh water tap. No cleaning hose was provided at the black waste area either.
The kids play area was closed too.
All town and village toilets and play areas were open around the area, as were facilities on other campsites, with relevant sanitising precautions.
We were disappointed.

Lovely quiet location. Excellent views of bay. Good walking from site.
Although the site is well established and the shower block is well used it is very clean and tidy generally around the site.
The owners are very pleasant and helpful.
Would certainly return.

Excellent site with beautiful location.
The site is well maintained and the toilet block and dish washing area always found to be clean.
The site is a credit to the staff who maintain it and they seem to have a lot of pride in their work.
Will certainly be back again.

Visited for the Glasgow fair weekend. Booked electric grass pitch. The pitches are on a slope, be aware.
The toilets are spotless, only 2 showers in ladies though. Shop very limited. There was no out of hours number to contact if you had problems which we did with horrendous anti social neighbours.
Spoke to reception the next morning who said they would have a word but that made it ten times worse.
Left a night early due to problem. No response from email complaint sent to the site. Spoiled a weekend for us.
Nice location shame about the lack of response.

An update to earlier reviews:
Additional hook-ups have been put in. All EHU pitches are now allocated. There are now several hardstand pitches - the bigger motorhomes usually go here because the ground is soft.
The shower block has had some attention within the limits of what can be done; we always had hot water, and there's a stool in both ladies showers (but no shower curtain).
Bins are emptied regularly, we saw no wasps but plenty of butterflies & bumble bees - the shop blackboard lists what wildlife has been seen. The shop also stocks a good range of papers, morning rolls etc.
Castle Douglas, The Food Town has a Tesco, several famous butchers & a great gallery / coffee shop, plus Threave Gardens (National Trust) & Threave Castle (Historic Scotland - reach it by boat, see the ospreys).
Sure, it's not the perfect site - refilling the fresh water tank means carefully driving over grass up to the one central standpipe, or having a long enough hose to reach it from the nearest hardstand.
You'll need a grey water cannister as there's no motorhome dump - one Motorhome owner who emptied his grey water onto the drive was rightly refused entry on a later visit. Wifi is available but is not free.
There's no way to stop grass being tracked into the toilet block (cleaned frequently) and there are no adapted facilities for disabled people.
We've been coming here for 30+ years and recent reviews had almost put us off, but we will be back. It's worth the niggles for the massive beach & long coast walks & fabulous night sky.

Sandyhills site is a lovely site next to a beach which are both looked after well. We often saw site owners maintaining the area and making sure no litter was about. The toilet and shower area was cleaned everyday. The park area was very lovely for the kids.
This is also a dog friendly place.
There is a little on site shop for the absolute basics but there's a tescos not too far away.
We honestly love this place and will be back again this year.

Beautiful site, right on Sandyhills Bay. Pitches are grass with electric hook up. It's a small site, great location with some nice walks around about and great access to the beautiful beach. A few issues, the toilet and shower facilities aren't great, no hot water in the sinks whilst we were there, at very best lukewarm. The toilet/shower area was very cold too, no heating on. Only 2 showers with push button for the hot water - very short lived water! Only one hook in one shower and 3 in the other. You can't get a shower without getting some very wet clothes or shoes - there isn't a chair or anywhere dry to stand. Washing up sink water was lukewarm. The bins appear to be visited by foxes or dogs who throw all the rubbish around. Waste water disposal is right underneath the fresh water supply which seems wrong. Other than these issues, the area is lovely. There's a kids play area on the site. There's a little shop where you can buy essentials and a good pub up the hill opposite the entrance (10 mins walk).

What a beautiful campsite this is!
The main electric pitches are in the middle of a circle of static caravans. It is a small site and on arrival no pitches are allocated so thinking there would be a huge choice we were shocked to find only one pitch free, other people had spread out making the availability minimal. Some camper vans had left the site for the day for their pitch to be taken by a new arrival! Only two pitches next to the beach were bookable.
Facilities are tired, toilets were clean but showers were built up with mould & gunge.
On the plus side the beaches were beautiful, unspoilt and went on for miles, ideal for dog walking & small children as the sea is shallow & warm. The staff were friendly and polite.
There's a Costcutter nearby in Colvend which sells essentials.
Insect repellent is a must as there are a lot of wasps. Good food at the Anchor in Kipford & the Steamboat Inn at Carsethorne. Both pubs were pet friendly.
If Sandyhills allocated pitches on arrival & improved their facilities then this would be a gem of a site.

Repeat visit, our second time this year. There are now new managers at the site, they're both so keen to give the site some TLC, though it's too early to say if they've got a grip on the points in previous reviews. But they have lots of ideas, and I have no doubt we'll be back as 'the price is right' and there's so much to do in the area.

This is a first class site. The wardens are very professional welcoming and friendly and go the extra mile to make your stay enjoyable. It is a small but well maintained site with a relaxed atmosphere. The shower and toilet block comes in for negative comments. Yes they are old and in need of a refurb but they are cleaned regularly and there is always hot water. No complaints from us. Walking distance from a lovely beach. Short distance from Dalbeattie and amenities makes this a perfect holiday destination. We will return as often as we can.
