Please note we have been advised that this location no longer offers camping, motorhome or caravanning pitches to the public, now only as part of prebooked fishing customers. If you know that this situation has changed in the future, please could you let us know. Many thanks

Gweryd lakes was very straight forward to find when following a satnav and if you're a confident driver on very windey, single lane roads.

Once you come off the roads and follow the tracks up to the site then a 4x4 would be a better idea than the Honda Civic we were driving. They were so badly kept that the bottom of the car was scraping and I was sure we were going to leave something behind in Wales.

We were early to arrive for the bank holiday weekend and it seemed, were the first so were offered the choice of either camping in the top field, near the main lake or further down, near the bottom lake, where it is quieter. We (party of 6 adults, 1 child, 3 tents and 2 dogs) chose the latter.

We found nice secluded spots not too far from the facilities.

We were very disappointed by the facilities as they consisted of; 2 toilets with 1 small sink, 1 shower room and 1 covered washing up area. There was also a bin marked for recycling but none for rubbish so it was no great surprise that rubbish had been left in various places around the area but not collected.

All of the facilities were pretty grim although the shower was warm.

We found the majority of the staff to be unfriendly and not particularly helpful.

I think this place is aimed more at people fishing rather than just on camping holidays.

We did enjoy the wildness of the place and the farm animals.

Just to say my family had a lovely stay here. It was just what we were looking for- an unspoiled, rural campsite.

The pitches are set in a fenced field set back from the lake, with large deciduous trees giving shelter making it a very scenic spot with great views of the lake.

The toilet/ shower block in the camping field was clean and loo roll well stocked. It is solar powered but that wasn't an issue for hot water as it was sunny enough during our stay. There were also proper heated showers by the barn too.

The shop is fairly basic on food supplies however village shop supplied all we needed (bread, canned foods etc), and the cafe on site was open with friendly staff to buy meals from when we didn't fancy cooking ourselves too.

We hired a firepit during our stay which is a must! It gave a lovely atmosphere in the evenings and allowed us to sit outside and stay warm.

It is far from a commercialised holiday park with jungle gyms and creches, but if you are looking for a peaceful country holiday to chill out, go walking/ biking or have a go at fishing which my son did and thoroughly enjoyed himself, then this is the place!

We will be back next year for sure!

I camped here whilst walking the Offa's Dyke Path. It is located just off the path and within easy reach via a track. The camping field was relatively even but unappealing with the grass cover coarse and unkempt.

The toilet block in the field was very basic and solar powered hot water non-existent on what was an overcast day. The toilet and shower in the main building were modern and good with a plentiful supply of hot water.

The shop seemed to sell almost exclusively fishing gear and was of no use in resupplying with provisions for walking the trail. The cafe, however was good, specialising in pancakes with different fillings. I also had breakfast. I did note, however, that they closed before their advertised closing time in the evening. This may have been because it was a Sunday.

The site is basic and aimed for fishermen, I must say we was rather concerned about this as we wasn't going for the fishing experience. However, the site was.

Even though we wern't fishing we had a brilliant time. The pitch was fine (slightly sloped), toilet facilities were very basic but ample. The shower was run off solar power which wasn't very hot but we found another shower by the shop which was red hot and lovely.

There is a large national park close by with nice short walks and is close to the centre of Mold where there is a supermarket handy.

The best thing by far about this site was the beautiful nature walks within the campsite grounds. They are like a magic woodland, this feature is fantastic.

We will definitely be returning to this site in the future.

My husband and son loved the fishing, hubby caught 37 mixed variety in main lake on Saturday. He was well chuffed. The setting is beautiful and the site is very peaceful and quiet, a good get-away-from-it-all place.

The facilities are basic, only one shower cubicle for the one small camping field although there is another shower 1 mins walk by the shop / cafe / reception.

The toilets and shower block were clean with plenty of loo paper. The shower is solar powered and the water was extremely hot on the Saturday night, too hot for children, there was no way to add any cold water.

We had a walk around the lake into the forest which was lovely. I think 2 days stay was perfect for us. 2 days fishing for hubby and 13 yr old son and 2 days relax for me.

Just one little gripe - no shelves or hooks in shower cubicle to hang anything. Had to use door handle. And you would have to watch small children constantly because of the lake, although there is a fence- were there's a will there's a way!

2 adults, 1 child and a dog. Loved this site. Jeannette - owner was very nice. The groundsman even brought us fresh eggs. Lovely walks round the forest with the most beautiful Christmas trees I have ever seen, and the wild life stop off points were great. My son even had a go at fishing. Site shop at bit basic (other than fishing equipment). Toilets clean and tidy and washing up facilities. Enjoyed my weekend here. Quiet but lovely. Fire pit a must ! (which they deliver with wood for you). Will be going again. If you order from the cafe(which was lovely) - they will even deliver this to your tent for you.

Recently stayed on this site for a couple of nights. The site itself is quite scenic and quiet and the facilities although basic are adequate.

The on site cafe was serving good food and the cook was very friendly and helpful.

The on site shop is basic unless you are an angler so we travelled to Ruthin which is around 7 miles away.

On our return to site we paid for the hire of a fire pit which did not turn up,when we enquired about this we found the owner was not really interested and was really quite flippant. The pit finally arrived several hours later.

In the middle of nowhere with around two miles of narrow, steep single track road to access.

Stunning scenery but a very basic camp site geared mainly to those who want to fish.

Vehicle access to the site can be limited from mid-evening until the morning to avoid disturbance to the occupants of a farmhouse some 500 yards away from the tents. This means that you have to park in a lay-by and walk the rest of the way and recover your vehicle the next morning.

The on-site shop is very basic but stocks plenty of bait and fishing tackle.

Toilet blocks were again basic but clean and well maintained with no shortage of loo roll and what appeared to be a small stock of after-shaves etc. For campers complimentary use.

Fire pits are rented out, and the logs to burn in them are supplied.

This place is just what we were looking for. Sure some people would complain about this and that (as below, toilets etc) Gweryd lakes are not overly commercialized, it is a little gem of a retreat with good fishing (3 rainbows on the bbq, what a treat!), open spaces, proper camp fires. If you want 5 star, go stay in hotel.
The owners are really helpful (delivered more firewood way after closing time etc) I hope the site stays just the way it is, there are plenty of other sites that cater for nonces. This is the site for real fisherman/campers, good facilities but not over the top. Would go back 7 days a week if only I could.

Loved my time there, got great pics and memories!
