Please note we have been advised that although the pub itself is still open, the campsite has closed, and no longer offers camping, motorhome or caravanning pitches. If you know that this situation has changed in the future, please could you let us know. Many thanks

Site has reopened under new management. Great couple of days ideal for York as bus runs outside every half a hour. Lovey little village, great bike ride to York along the river about 3 miles. Toilets only when pub open
New people running it making a good job wish them luck

We have used this camp-site for years as we find it a convenient base for York and surrounding areas with a bus outside of the pub or train. It's basic but value for money. Has no showers or toilets but we use our own facilities anyway, does have a chemical waste though. We stayed the same time as the reviewer below, Pauline Sellers, and the electric did trip but we were told by owner that something was wrong with the power in the area and not the overloading of the system, which we were all compensated with a free night. The pub serves good food at very reasonable prices with friendly staff. The site is what it says on the tin.

THIS SITE IS UNSUITABLE FOR UNITS OVER 23 feet
The site entrance is particularly steep & we scraped the bottom of our caravan on the ground entering and leaving
The electricity tripped the first night probably due to three units being plugged into one electric point
Very long grass & it was quite churned up and muddy
There appeared to be commercial travellers staying on the site on a semi-permanent basis
It was cheap and even saying that we wouldn't revisit
Shame because it could be really good

This site is a real hidden gem, very peaceful and relaxing. Toilets are in the pub, which is open from 9. 30am till late, there isn't any showers though, but we used our own facilities in the camper.
The pub is a very clean and friendly village pub. The food is absolutely superb at very reasonable prices. The beer also is top notch served by Keith, a very friendly and helpful host.
Bus stop right outside the pub, with has a good service into the centre of York. There is a parade of shops about 10mins walk from the site, which has a mini supermarket, newsagents, hairdressers, café and a butchers. Some lovely walks by the church and by the river.
We went with another couple who also took their camper. We all agreed that we had a very enjoyable weekend and all vowed that we will be back again to visit this site.

Just back from a two night stay. Our first time staying here. Very friendly sight. Excellent value for money if you need a base for york. Buses every 30 mins into york until 11. 30 pm. Will definitely be back here soon :) beautiful views and a local shop about 15 mins pleasant walk also a pub with Indian restaurant combined. We never had chance to eat in Poppleton as we spent our free time in York. The lord nelson have a menu offering home cooked meals will be trying them in the future

Nice little site, but be careful on access if you have a longer caravan. We had a bit of difficulty getting on and off due to the length and a small dip in the road before going up the hill into the pub car park. Field a bit muddy, but hey, with the amount of rain that has hit recently, I would be more surprised if it wasn't. Pub landlord showed us where to go to pitch up, and after that we were left alone. Kids enjoyed playing on the rest of the field and darts in the pub, which was quiet. No facilities unless pub open, then there is a toilet, but this is well publicised on review so we knew what to expect. Plenty to do in York. Jorvik do a family pass for 4 (2 adults and 2 Children for just under £50, but this gets you into Jorvik centre, Dig, Barley Hall and the Micklegate Bar Museum. Park and ride close by (£2. 70 return per adult, kids free), but cheapest parking in the town centre that we found was at Fossgate car park on Jewbury (£1 per hour). For eating there is the pub itself which has a reasonably large menu plus specials. Nearby there is a Hungry Horse place that has a play site for the kids on wetter days and the Wetherby Whaler.

Spent a night at the Lord Nelson as we needed to be close to York. The site is basic but it does have EHUs, it's mainly flat and is well sheltered. The pub serves food and seems to be popular but we didn't eat there on this occasion. As other reviewers have said there are shops in the village where you can pick up supplies and there is a bus stop outside pub.
There are some great walks along the river which the dog enjoyed and the area seemed popular with canoeists and cyclists. The area around the church and tythe barn have featured on an episode of Time Team in the past.
I'd happily return to this site in the future.

Brilliant little site, nice handy bus stop right out side. It was a 15 minute bus ride to the centre of York and a regular bus service. The Landlord was very helpful. The pub served 3 good quality real ales and home cooked food. Childrens play area was good although the bouncy castle overheated.
The site was well kept and very quiet
I have only one negative, with the toilets being in the pub, they are only accessible during pub opening hours which meant a quick early morning trip to the local fast food outlet for the toilets.
We will however return
