Brilliant site. There are electric hook ups, fresh water tap and chemical waste disposal but no showers, the pitches are grassed and level. The Landlord and his wife are very helpful and friendly. We had lunch in the pub on the Friday & Saturday which was beautiful and all fresh veg etc. Cost for two meals and two drinks were on average £20.
After lunch we caught the #10 bus right outside the pub to go into York. Bus journey is approx 20 to 30 mins dependent on traffic and cost £2. 20. Buses run every half hour to and from York and run up to midnight on the return journey so it's possible to have a day and night in York without any problem of getting back.
We had no reason to go to the local shop but passed it on the bus and would estimate about a 10 min walk from the site if you need it.
Will definitely be returning soon!

Our first visit but not our last. A well sheltered CL site for 5 vans/motorhomes with electric hook up, two water points and chemical loo disposal and use of the toilets in the pub when open {they opened them up about 9. 30 am when we were there whilst cleaning the pub).
A short walk to a parade of shops Costcutters (had all I needed and if not they would try to get it for you next day) the fresh bread was great, a newsagents and a very good butchers.
The pub did good food every day lunch and evening and OH enjoyed the beer a good selection of wine and very friendly patrons and a TV with a sports channel in bar. You could also buy fresh eggs at the bar. The owner and his wife were very helpful.
The Tythe barn and small church in the village are worth a visit and the bus stop out side the front door with bus to York every 30 mins was a bonus we will be back. We paid £7 per night plus £5 for EHU.

If you thought that the name of this campsite sounded like a pub, you’d be right. The Lord Nelson is a Free House in the large-ish village of Nether Poppleton, near York. It is only £7 per night – and it’s on a level grassed area at the back, away from the pub, surrounded by bushes and an old wall. Very quiet, nice and peaceful.
It had been raining a lot (Slight Understatement™) when we arrived, so we weren’t surprised to see a soggy patch on the camping field, but the rest was well drained, and with only one other caravan there, had a choice of where to pitch.
In the evening on day one, we went into the pub for a meal and a pint (nice to be able to have a drink and walk ‘home’). The interior seemed to be gloriously unspoilt by progress. Pub food can sometimes be a bit hit and miss, so we weren’t sure what to expect. The menu was standard pub fare, my other half had a roast beef dinner and I had mince beef and onion pie from the specials board. We were expecting standard reheated-bought-in stuff, but were pleasantly surprised. It was home cooked, good plain food and plenty of it. The pie was delicious, perfect shortcrust pastry, perfectly seasoned filling. There were roast potatoes, 4 veg and plenty of gravy.
Not much in the way of facilities, but we like it that way. There's a little village supermarket a short distance away and a network of footpaths for exploring.

This site ticked all the boxes for what we were looking for.
At £7 a night it offered good value. The landlord was very friendly and offered good advice. We had a pub meal which was very good, 2 meals and 2 drinks cost us £20.
Bus stop right outside that takes you to York. You can get off the bus at York train station ( which is easy to find on your return) or the stop after.
This site may not be ideal for everyone due to no showers, no kids play area etc but for a night or two in a motorhome /caravan to explore York by day and drink in the pub by night, its ideal.

We booked this site as it was advertised in the 2007/2008 Caravan Club site handbook as a CL but upon arrival there was none of the usual CC signs and there is no mention of it in the 2009/2010 book. That said, they are still taking bookings but it appears it’s no longer exclusive to CC members. The approach from the North West was very straightforward via the M62, A1(M), A64, A1237, and Millfield Lane. This is a village pub that has a large caravan storage area to the rear, with a patch of grass and some hardstanding for you to pitch on. OK, you do feel a little like you are camping in a pub car park, but it is possible to get some privacy, at least on the hardstanding. The water tap and chemical disposal point are situated at the rear of the pub next to the smoking shelter, so probably best to leave the housekeeping tasks to early in the morning when it is quiet. The grey waste can be let out either on the grass or by removing an inspection cover in the floor near the back door to the pub- again probably best left to when it is quiet. There was a little noise from the pub around midnight when people were going home, but it wasn’t unduly rowdy. We didn’t use the pub ourselves due to having small children but it appeared popular for both food and drink. There is a bus stop outside the pub and the number 10 will take you to York city centre in about half and hour for £2. 70 return, and 50p each way for children. The buses run every half hour Monday to Saturday and hourly on Sunday. We were charged £5 per night, there are no electric hook-ups and they are open all year. The staff were very friendly and pointed out the local amenities, including a parade of shops within easy walking distance.
