This is a lovely camping and caravaning park with ample space between tents. This farm have dairy cows which are lovely to see and hear for the children. They do moo early in the morning but it never bothered us at all. One early morning there was a bird there that woke us up as it sounded like a car alarm which was quite funny but it just happened the once.

My family and I were there over the bank holiday just gone and even thought there were loads of tents the facilities they were always clean and we never had to queue for toilets or showers. Water pressure in the showers was good and the water was really warm.

There are 2 parks for the children. One is in the family field and the other near the static caravans. My children loved the park even though it is quite small. There is also a field to play in at the side of the park near the static caravans.

There is a burger van near the main camping field that is open from 8am - 10am (most days but not all) and 4. 30pm - 8. 30pm(most days not all). It sells cartons of milk, hot and cold drinks, cooked breakfasts(I had one this morning before we left to come home and it was gorgeous), curry's, burgers and scampi etc. We also went to the local pub (Fylingdales Inn) which is 5 minutes walk away and the food was delicious. It is a Theakston pub so you might be able to go online and look at their menu. Also in the village there is a good grocery store that sells almost everything you could need while camping and also there is a bakers and butchers.

To get to Robin Hoods Bay you have to walk through the farms own fields and nature reserve which is beautiful but bring your wellies in case it rains as can be very muddy plus there are plenty of cow pats around. My kids loved it when the cows were moved from one of the fields to the cow sheds as they walked by us very slowly so they could have a good look at them. With small children it is a 20 minute walk to get to the beach but it will be about a 10 minute walk if you have a good steady walking pace. The hills in Fylingthorpe are very steep so be prepared to get out of breath.

The staff were absolutely lovely as they are very welcoming with lovely smiles. They will do anything they can to make your stay a good one.

We will be returning.

First, the good bits! The staff were lovely, very friendly and helpful. The toilets, showers and washing up area were clean and tidy.

Now for the moan! This was our first family camping trip and we were really excited. We read the reviews of this site and they looked pretty good as did the website.

When we arrived we were shown to the ' square' field. On first impression it looked a bit bedraggled but the weather was poor so that didn't help!

As we were pitching others started to arrive and we started to realise how close we would be to other tents! When the field was full there was hardly any room between tents at all, literally no space for the kids to run around.

The field next door appeared to be a bit more spacious, this was EHU I think.

We soon realised that we were pretty far from the play areas, yet the field we were in was full of kids. When we walked round at a later point it seemed that couples and people without children were located in the field next to the play area. Somebody told us that you had to book for 7 nights to be in that field, how true, I don't know.

It seeemed a tad silly to put families miles away and people without families in what appeared to be a family area.

I am trying not to sound like a moaner and we do try to see the good in stuff but little things like only one bin/skip, pretty far away wasn't really good enough.

It was pretty expensive for what it was we think. The field we were in felt like a complete afterthought, people packed on like sardines in a poorly kept field. We appreciate that this is a working farm and that this field was probably in use the day before but maybe the campers staying there should pay less?

A lovely location, great pub nearby, friendly staff and clean facilities but we felt like we were shoved in a corner with no thought so extra money could be made!

This used to be another of our favourites, indeed we have spent 2 Christmas's here.

Like many working farm sites, money seems to have been diverted to the farming side and as such the general appearance of the site has suffered, but not so the fees, these have risen sharply over the years.

The shower block used to be spick and span, but dirt from the general neglected site seems to remain there all day.

I remember piped music on the showers, but that has gone too.

The area is fantastic. A short rustic walk to Robin Hoods Bay takes you to some delightful shops and pubs, and Whitby, our favourite, and Scarborough are a few miles drive.

All in all, this site used to have everything, but the increased fees have not reflected the upkeep of the facilities.

Stayed at this site last weekend and was very impressed.

The person on reception was helpful giving us a map of where to go. The entrance is by barrier and code which was good. We were on EHU and these seem to be all around the edge of the field which is accessed by hardstanding which was great due to the amount of rain we have had.

The facilities block was immaculate lovely hot showers that last 5 minutes and plenty of room to get changed. There is a bath for an extra charge if required.

The Washing up area is undercover and again plenty of wash sinks. My only gripe was I wish they provided a bin in this area for rubbish from plates.

Didn't use the mobile van that came morning and again in the evening but looked nice food.

Overall great site for visiting Robin hoods bay we cycled to Scarborough on the cinder track and this was accessible from the site and whitby on the same line.

Will recommend to others and will return

We have just returned today after a 4 night stay at Middlewood, over the Easter break, and have had a lovely time.

The site is separated into 3 sections -

An EHU section before the reception for a few tents/campervans

A large field to the rear, that contained some hardstanding for caravans and motorhomes, and ehu for tents.

And a selection of static caravans for hire in field next to reception.

As I was told that our tent was classified as a large tent (I'll come to this issue later), we were allocated a big pitch right at the bottom end of the far field, just about as far as you could get from the facilities block. As we are toilet training a 2 year old girl, we asked if we could have a pitch closer. We were allocated pitch number 54, right next to the facilities block which was perfect. All great stuff.

Now our tent is a 6 man Montana lake tent, not huge - but this was still classed as a large tent, which resulted in a surcharge of half the original premium added again. This equated to £36 per night, plus a child rate of £3 per night - total £156 for 4 nights! Personally, it was a little over the top for me, especially for only a Montana!

The facilities were very good, always clean with plenty of hot water. We never had to queue.

The pitches were flat, but the EHUs were quite close together.

The area is lovely. A short walk (around 15 mins) and you're at the beach at Robin Hoods Bay. A 10min drive and you're in Whitby. 20mins and you're in Scarborough.

Now the EHU are apparently new for the tents at the bottom of the field, and we were not on this circuit (number 54 had its own circuit for some reason). This didn't stop the problems that hit the site over 3 of the 4 nights we were there.

The first night was fine, but on Friday the local circuit breaker (in the facilities block), tripped out about 5 times, from people overloading the circuit. Management were down to sort it every time within 30mins each time.

They walked around checking what people had on - of course no one owned up to running too many items at once. On Saturday morning the site management upped the amp in the local breaker to 100amps, apparently. And this is were the troubles started.

That night someone again tripped the circuit - this time the fuse blew and the tents on the new circuits were without power for a couple of hours until a new fuse could be obtained (not an easy feat on Easter Saturday at 9. 30pm).

Then on Easter Sunday, at 9pm it happened again - but instead of just blowing the local breaker - it tripped the whole site. Again, the management were faultless - an emergency electrician was called and the power was back on by 11pm.

This time the management walked around the site, telling people not to run 2 high AMP appliances at once (Kettles (especially ones from home) or heaters) and if it went off again that night the problem would not be fixed until the morning. I should point out at this time that only on the final night did any of this effect us, as like I stated earlier - number 54 is on its very own local breaker - and only when the whole site went down were we affected.

Conclusion -

PROS - great location, flat pitches, clean and queue-less faculties, outstanding management/customer service.

CONS - The price!

Would I go back…. Yes, if it was cheaper.
Management response: We would like to thank 'Okean' for his review, and we are glad he enjoyed his stay with us over the Easter weekend. We would just like to clarify the price he paid. A Montana Lake 6 man tent has an approx footprint size of 25.5 square meters (6.15m x 4.15m). When the booking was made, we were told of an extra front canopy and a side porch. When we added these, the length of his tent became 8 meters and 5.3 meters at the widest point. Therefore we added the surcharge.

We apply a surcharge of half the original pitch fee, for tents with a footprint size over 25 square meters. We can only quote and apply costings with the information we are given. The customer is always quoted the full cost before the booking is made. If you tell us you have a big tent, but are unsure of the size, we do apply the surcharge. However, if you ask us to have a look at your tent, once erected, and we do not deem it to be extra large, then we do refund you the surcharge paid.

In regards to the Electrical problems we had over the Easter weekend - There is a fantastic article on ukcampsite.co.uk, called 'Basic Guidance on Electric Hook-up for Tents' - follow the link http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/articles/view.asp?id=81 We are sure the problems we suffered could have been avoided if everyone had adhered to the basics.

Once again, we thank 'Okean' for his comments, we would be delighted to welcome him and his family back !!

Kind regards

Spent a week at Middlewood April 2012. Here's our four penneth

Pros. Lovely walk down to Robin hoods bay past reception, The Great Griddler food van on the touring area run by a lovely lady and smashing food at great value

The Flyingdale Arms welcomed our dogs as much as us, wish that was our local as food and service great

Cons. These far outnumber the pros.

Not one dog bin on site. Just the 'skip'

Poor recycling facilities with nothing for glass or plastic

Very poorly drained pitches with huge ruts that filled up with water when it rained and all this gets 'walked' into your van or tent

Freezing shower block ( a disgrace ) no heating whatsoever ' and the 5 minute shower was cold for the first 2 mins

I didn't find one single hot tap that would run hot water

Came home one day to see grass had been mowed, all the hook ups had been taken out ( and plugged in again of a fashion ).

Honestly believe all the emphasis at Middlewood is too the static vans, touring and tents are just an afterthought to use up a spare field.

Just returned from an enjoyable 5 night stay at Middlewood Farm. The facilities were very clean and the path to Robin Hoods Bay was great. Just a ten minute walk to the beach.

The site was visited by a small fresh grocery van on a morning and there is a takeaway food van available most nights and some mornings.

The shop in Fylingdales was handy but overpriced and the food in the pub was mediocre but the local butchers did a fab job of becoming the Pizza takeaway in the evenings.

The no noise rule after 11 was recognised. I am only scoring the location an 8 as one of the fields was very close to a housing estate.

Would definitely return for another holiday.

Recently used this site at the end of the Coast to Coast walk, and as a backpacker with no car found it to be extremely good value and perfect location.

The bathroom facilities were very nice, and clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful. And although it may not be obvious on the map, it is the best location of all the camp sites for access to Robin Hood's Bay on foot - either by road through Fylingthorpe, or along a well maintained footpath directly to the bottom of the village, which avoids that steep climb up and down the hill. The high hedges on the site also provided great protection against the strong coastal winds.

Nearby, not only do you have 5 or 6 pubs within a ten minute walk, but several shops and a beach. And as if that weren't enough, there is a very useful and friendly 'burger' van on site selling cheap hot drinks and snacks, and a milk van which calls daily.

A very nice site. Highly recommended. I will return!

This was our first camping experience. Arrival was very smooth and we were shown to our site (EHU) by a friendly guy. The grass was fairly worn at what would be the front of the tent, which he apologised for. Very level pitch.

The toilet block was immaculate. I was surprised by how clean it was. Plenty of toilets and showers, with hairdryers there too. Washing up area could get a little crowded, but we could see it from our tent, so not a problem.

Plenty of areas for dog walking and owners knowledgeable about good walks. Close to a local shop and about 15 minutes walk to the village, which had plenty of small shops and a nice pub with outside area that people and dogs tended to congregate in. It had a nice welcoming, friendly feel.

Everyone on site seemed very friendly and it was busy. Quiet after 11pm. There is a food van that does a full English breakfast and variations of that, which was delicious and reasonably priced.

Would definitely go again.

Easy to book day before - helpful reception staff. Level hard standing pitch quite close to next pitch. Facilities clean and showers warm and simple to use. Term time so site was not full - would imagine queues could be an issue.

Great location which would justify £22 per night- short trot down to Robin Hoods Bay. Quite noisy the night we were there from tenting fraternity - not a problem for us as we had no young children.

Great site and we will return but not in term time or Bank Holidays. Would imagine site would be very windy and exposed if in main camping field you would need a sheltered hedge pitch if in tent.
