Whatever you want from a site you can get it at Cloud Farm. Sitting at the bottom of the stunning Doone Valley near Lynton this lovely friendly family run site is a must if you want to persuade friends and family members that camping is the most relaxing bonding time you can have and for those who like to exert more energy than sitting around your own open camp fire there is horse riding, fishing and some amazing walks not to mention the great tea rooms and shop which cater for all your needs as well as tempting you with delicious home made cakes and cream teas ( my favourite) which is a meal in itself.

It can get busy but you will never feel closed in and the atmosphere is always friendly with the other campers.

If I had to find any negative points I would say that it would be nice to have a more modern shower block and some of the site is sloping and the access road can be a little difficult as it is long and narrow with hardly any passing space. This said it is still my favourite site of all time

The campsite is in a beautiful valley. However the river is mostly fenced off and not quite as described on the website. Access was not simply a matter of walking to the rivers edge and start playing.

The facilities were pretty typical of a site where the main object was to rake in as much money as possible. Half a dozen rickety showers were basic at best, despite being 'renewed' recently.

There was a shop which sold basics at pretty high prices. The takeaway charged £1. 60 for a teabag and hot water. Quite a good profit I thought. Logs were sold at two bags for £10 plus a free bag of kindling. No wonder campers were encouraged to have camp fires! We resisted the desire for a cream tea at the cafe. Strange how the website gave such a good photo of this area.

The pitches themselves were fine. Usually level and mowed. It was not Cloud Farms fault that the midges were plentiful and pesty. One whiff of smoke and they were gone anyway.

The surrounding area is truly beautiful. The Doone Valley is worth the walk. The local hamlets are pretty and can provide services such as Post Office, gift shop etc. The main benefit of camping here is the ability to get to places like Lynmouth and Lynton, both attractive in their own way. Further out is the fantastic beach at Woolacombe.

Overall I would say that provided you got supplies elsewhere this is an attractive site with good pitches.

I have just returned from 9 nights at Cloud Farm and despite the weather had a lovely break.

This has been the most expensive site I have stayed at in the last 2 years - £8 per night for myself, £2 for the dog and £4 for EHU. Normally I would expect to pay £1 for the dog and no more than £3 for EHU.

I was initially concerned about the no booking, so phoned prior to leaving and was assured there was plenty of space.

I arrived and was greeted by John and Mark who were very welcoming and really went out of their way to ensure I had my 'perfect pitch' - not wanting to be too close to others and away from children kicking footballs around. On the main field there were a couple of large family groups which I was offered a pitch near as that is where the EHU was, which did not appeal to me - I camp alone and camp for the peace and quiet but I also wanted electric (very fussy customer!) I was then offered a pitch on one of the higher terraces but there was no electric, Mark explained there was a large wedding party happening in one of the other fields where all his extra EHU leads had gone but assured me that on the Sunday he could get electric to me if that is what I wanted - perfect.

The showers - they were the best I have come across on a campsite for water pressure but I don't like the unisex thing. They were always clean, but I did tend to use them 'out of set hours'. The water does not drain out of the shower tray until long afer you finish so you are stood in 2 inches of water for most of your shower. There is only a shower curtain between you and others which to me felt a little uncomfortable particularly when men are in there as well. The toilets were always very clean and well stocked with loo roll. There was a dish cleaning area and freezer which I made a lot of use of. There was also a tumble drier but I had no need to use that so am not aware of the cost.

The site is very rural but fantastic for walking and between bouts of bad weather I was able to get some great walking done.

There is a cafe on site which I sampled on my last evening - lovely food that was even delivered to the tent! The downside for me was pricing - £6 for a curry and rice - very nice but not a lot for the money, hungry again 1/2 hour later. Mark was able to recommended The Staghunter pub in the next village for lunch and I had the very best fish & chips and side salad and felt really full afterwards - £9. 00 - that was value for money.

Nearest towns are Porlock and Lynton which both have small spar type shops, for anything bigger you would need to drive into Minehead for Tesco or Morrisons.

I would easily recommend this site for the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, the peace and quiet and beautiful location, but I would make sure I brought everything I needed food wise as the shop and cafe are pricey.

Overall a lovely site, if planning permission could be granted for more showers to allow for male and female, if prices in the cafe/shop were more reasonable and EHU cost was on a par with other sites in the area then I don't think it could be faulted. - Nearly forgot - the midges! If the wind drops the midges appear in force - be warned and prepared!

I hope to return in September when school holidays are over to enjoy more fantastic walking in the area.

My family and I (2 adults, 3 under 6's) have just returned from Cloud Farm- overall, we enjoyed our stay but there were good points and bad points about the site:

GOOD:

*we found staff to be laid back and friendly- I liked the 'pitch up and come and find us in the morning attitude', plus my husband was able to IOU at the shop, and negotiate some prices!

*no pressure to be out by a certain time- we packed up at our leisure.

*the area is beautiful. I loved waking up to the sound of birds, cuckoo's, lambs and sheep. The stream is lovely- older kids playing in it, and it was on a walking route.

*showers and hot water included in the price!

*functioning washing machine and dryer!

*wood is a good price for fires.

Not good:

*Midgies! take repellent and citronella candles!

*no bookings, no pitches. Which meant on a busy bank holiday, after a long drive we had a terrible initial pitch a long way from the loos etc, on a steep slope. I kept having to haul the kids back up the tent during the night (and myself) and we would all wake up on one side of the tent, against the flysheet in the rain. You can guess what happened next. Everything was falling off tables etc- hard work. Speaking to others, many were in the same position with regards the slopes. Luckily, when lots of people left on the first sunny day we moved to a flat pitch, which was much better.

* the unisex showers are interesting. And not particularly clean even at 8 in the morning! They are only open 8-10am then 6-8pm, so got very busy. There are no facilities for strip washing with hot water- so babywipe central it was for most of the trip (ugh!) Not great for shower dodging little uns.

* No baby change facilities.

* only 1 electric point (unknown to staff it seemed) for those that like a hairdryer- in a portable cabin toilet block.

* when it was busy, there clearly was not the facilities for the amount of campers on the site.

* shop very overpriced- £3. 99 for 5m of tin foil! £2. 50 for a bag of pasta! Come on!

Would we go again? I'm not sure. We'd been before without kids, 7 years ago and enjoyed it. Maybe it's easier without children. That said, the kids had a great time. Perhaps for a short break. But personally I think I'd rather go with bossy staff and bookable pitches for a family holiday at the moment.

I have just returned from a long (bank holiday) weekend at Cloud Farm. This is a superb sheltered site particularly good if you want to abandon your car and do some walking as it is quite isolated and off the beaten track. I liked this as it was really quiet. The site is an idyllic setting nestled between the hills with a wealth of birds/wildlife. (loads of swallows)

Being in a hillside setting the pitches are surprisingly flat. Some were sloping slightly but there are no designated pitches so you can set up wherever. There are EHU (we didn't use these) down near the river and these are pretty level. It was really nice to be able to build a campfire and logs were on sale at a reasonable price.

The showers are unisex and in a portable cabin. A little on the primitive side I thought but they worked fine and were hot and powerful with space to put your clothes etc and I never had to wait. There were a number of toilets cleaned each day however a bit of a squeeze when brushing your teeth at the sink. There is no phone network here so enjoy your time away from it all. If you do need to phone there was no problem to use campsite landline.

This site welcomes children and my boy said the best part of the holiday was paddling in the river. The tearoom garden is lovely and you can order food/coffee throughout the day. I could have sat there all day.

What really makes this campsite special is the beautiful location and the really helpful site staff.

I can't wait to return!

We went to Cloud Farm over the Bank Holiday weekend. Whilst it was great that you didn't have to book it was amazing how many people were allowed onto the camp site.

As other reviews have mentioned, the facilities are very limited (4 showers for 100s of people, in some portable cabin. There was no way of cleaning the showers so you can imagine how dirty they got. ) There were 4 toilets with hand basins right by them in the womens, so it wasn't very pleasant having a wash there in the morning.

My other half reported that the men's had a urinal right next to the only basin -nice! Also the toilets weren't cleaned regularly given the number of people and quickly ran out of paper. Final moan was that they let people onto the site at what ever time they turned up.

We were unfortunate enough to have a postage stamp sized patch next to us in the evening so when someone came to the site at midnight that is where they put their tent up -waking us and the surrounding campers up.

Having said all that the site was lovely, right next to a river. We pitched past the toilet block to the left which was very windy. Apparently there were less windy places on the site so might be worth checking out if pitching up in the wind. There weren't really anything purpose built facilities for children other than what nature had provided (which my boys loved, walking by and then in the stream, and playing football when space allowed!)

So, overall, if you don't go on at a time that's likely to be busy, and you don't mind not having clean, modern facilities then this site itself was in a lovely location.

I was really looking forward to visiting this site, yes it is very beautiful location but I am afraid the owners seem to feel that is enough!

My first gripe are the prices - a pint of milk £1, a 500g gas canister a whopping £12.50!

Second, the facilities and the lack of cleaning - at 8am in the morning there was no toilet paper in any of the 4 ladies toilets when I complained I was told they were refilled the previous evening at 9! There was toilet paper all over the floor and I did not once see them cleaned. The showers are unisex and housed within a metal container. They have fitted shower cubicles like you might have at home but all that separates the cubicles from one another is a flimsy white curtain, even worse there was no hot water and myself and another lady complained but not a word of apology from the staff! The next day I managed to get a shower but it was blocked and the water remained in the tray - yuck! Also you can't shower when you want only between 8-10 in morning and 6 -8 in evening so there was always a queue!

My other gripe, the lack of booking all sounds like a nice relaxed attitude, what it really means is that the owners can pack in as many campers as they can at peak times. I was worried about this as was travelling a long distance and was assured it would not be a problem. But the site was so packed we had to pitch on a significant slope and we all slipped out of bed every night. There are some levels pitches but there are a lot more that are on a steep slope.

Also if you are a bit nervous about single lane driving and hills you need to take in 2nd gear stay away from this area. So yes the location is fantastic but was spoilt by the poor facilities and unhelpful staff. I could not recommend this site.

We recently stayed at Cloud Farm for 4 nights (although we were hoping to stay longer). The camp site is in an idyllic location and we set our tent up right next to the river and had a field all to ourselves, which was perfect for our dog to enjoy daily swimming in the river and we had a camp fire every night with the gorgeous and relaxing sound of the river.

The shop was very limited, but they did sell a few essential foods, takeaway and cream teas in the tea garden shop (although unfortunately they let their dog roam the kitchens and on one night we saw a few birds inside the shop after it was locked up).

The facilities left a lot to be desired - the 6 unisex showers were in a storage container and were only open for 2 hrs in the morning and 2 hrs at night.

The owners did say we could ask them at any time if we wanted to use them outside these times and they would put the generator on for us. Although when we wanted a shower after a BBQ and fire in the evening, they were nowhere to be found!

The next day they said they were sorry but they all went to watch football in a pub! I don't know what anyone would have done if there was an emergency!

There is a lovely Cafe Deli at the end of the drive, which I must admit was gorgeous and well worth a visit. We cut our trip short as we were told on our 2nd day that there was to be a wedding party with a marquee and 100 guests in our field a few days later, which we weren't told about before we pitched up.

My daughter and I, travelled here straight from staying at another campsite in Bath. What a welcome change in atmosphere. Proper camping. We stayed here for 3 nights but will be back next year.

Be warned getting to this area involves some tight hairpin bends and very steep hills which my overpacked KA struggled with, but it is so worth it.

The location is in a beautiful valley in the Exmoor Park with free roaming ponies, sheep and deer on the hills and a stream running through the site.

Upon arrival we were told we could pitch anywhere. So after walking around we decided on the first field as you drive in. We overlooked the stream which was down a steep drop so if you have little ones beware in this field, other fields were fenced off in areas and there was no drop, so safer. This field had plenty of room for ball games and running around. Even though the weather was not behaving all the children were happy and making friends and having so much fun.

Fires are permitted and they sell wood for £5 a bag, great fun roasting marshmallows and keeping the chill off.

The ladies toilets were 2 in a portacabin and 2 in a shower block with 2 showers and then 6 shared-use power showers were in another cabin which were available at busy times (2hrs am and 3hrs in evening) These were hot and powerful, but only a shower curtain covers your modesty and it wasn't easy to tell if they were in use!

Another room housed 3 washing up sinks, a fridge/freezer and washing machine and dryer for peoples use. A bit spit and sawdust but adequate and clean even though the site was very busy, with showery rain. This is a farm location and a more back to basics site.

The owners are friendly and always around to help, advise or serve in the shop, if not you just ring the bell and they come with a smile.

There is a small cafe which provides a takeaway service, breakfasts and homemade cakes, teas and coffees.

This is a great location for walking and visiting the seaside. Woolacombe was 50mins away with a fantastic sandy beach, Dunster/Polock 30mins with beautiful villages dotted about.

I can't wait to come back next year.

This is a very picturesque site with very good access to walks up the Doone Valley and onto the moors. The site has a relaxed feel, you are allowed camp fires and dogs are welcome.

The nearest shops are about 6 miles away in Porlock or Lynton (which is better value) The campsite shop was not open during or visit and only sold the basics. There are a few good pubs for food within about 5 miles. Also the site has a nice cafe selling breakfasts and light lunches.

We were disappointed with the showers, there is a new block of unisex power showers, but these were not open during our visit, (due to lack of campers) so we had to use the old ones which were nearly always rather cold and draughty, this was quite disappointing.

Otherwise there is a washing machine £4. 50 per load, and a tumble dryer £1. 50 and nice indoor washing up facilities plus frigde and freezer.

There is no play area for kids, but most will play in the river, and there are no busy roads.

Electric hook-ups have just been installed, and some new areas of flat camping have been created over the winter.

Overall this is a nice site, although it is a bit expensive compared to others in the area, if you like walking and don’t want to drive you will love it.
