Visited with 2 other families for a long weekend. Usually you can only book for 2 nights at weekend but they were happy to allow us to extend the booking and pay cash. Nice to be there when everyone else had gone home! We have a large tent and it just fitted in to the Orchard but there is also a large field to camp in. We were camped in a row which meant we couldn't all camp around the fire but this didn't matter too much. Lots of space for kids to play and discover, they had a fantastic time. We had story time in the secret garden and they liked running through the woods and playing in the big field.

It was quite noisy at night, curfew is 1130 but noise levels were loud and then you are woken by the ever so chatty cockerel but it is a farm! We didn't pay to feed the animals as at £3 for children AND adults it seemed pricey especially considering it is a very pricey campsite. £50 a night is not on the cheap end of the scale, was it worth it? In many ways yes but as other reviews state the facilities let it down. Simply not enough toilets and washbasins, it was cramped in there. For that reason I do not feel it is worth that price. Taking stuff up to the field in trolleys is tedious but good exercise and we had no problem with the short walk to the toilets. All in all a very good weekend and a great campsite only let down by the lack of facilities.

Firstly I can't fault this place for location, nor for friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. Unlike many campsites that will greet you with locked gates if you're so much as a minute past the official check in time, there's an out of hours number to call so no need to panic if you hit horrific traffic on the way. As everyone else here says, being able to light a fire is a rarity these days and really changes the experience for the better - firewood is available on site as well as a small shop for basic essentials.

That said, I must be honest about some of the potential down sides so that people can make their own choice with full info! The main things that might surprise people are: none of the pitches have electric hookup and you also can't take your car anywhere near them either. So this means any electric stuff you might've planned on running from your car, you'll have to find battery operated alternatives or go without! This also means having to carry all your gear up to the pitches, which are up a steep and very muddy slope - wellies or sturdy boots are a must. They do provide hand carts for you to do this, but it's still pretty hard work - though you only have to do it once and many hands make light work as they say. A common sight is people carrying fully inflated airbeds up after having used their cars to power the pumps!

The other issue is that most of the pitches are not really what you'd call flat. So pick your place carefully, unless you want to spend all night sliding out of bed!

Also there is only one toilet block which is - you've guessed it - at the bottom of that steep, muddy slope - which has no lighting! So plan your liquid intake carefully to avoid much annoyance at night! The showers are. Very basic. There are just two, unisex, very tiny cubicles with barely space to get in round the door and shut it behind you. No chair or anything to sit on while you dry your feet (no space for one!) but the water is at least nice and hot.

That said, it's very family oriented - there's a beautiful garden and a little library with activities for the kids, who will also enjoy the animals on the farm. Also means it's quite noisy - including at night - so if you're looking for a quiet getaway it's. Not so quiet.

If you don't mind all of this, it's just an excellent place to take the family to explore the New Forest. Just a stone's throw from the Beaulieu palace, abbey and motor museum (which will keep the whole family occupied all day) and New Forest Activities (canoes, kayaks, high ropes, archery and so on, bookable in the village) and lots of horse riding places. The rough and ready air of the place didn't bother us and actually rather added to the fun and adventure of it all.

We are big fans of Embers Camping. We first visited last year just after it had opened and loved the friendly atmosphere, helpful staff, being able to cook on a real fire, the freedom our four children had to explore the meadow and the proximity to the farm animals. We returned again this year (the only time we have returned anywhere) as the children kept asking when we would be going back and found that, although the campsite was busier, all the things we loved about it hadn't changed and the comments we'd made to improve facilities had been acted on. There was an issue with mud because of the amount of rain, so we lived in wellies on site; the staff did an amazing job of keeping the toilets and showers clean given the conditions.

Other reviewers have mentioned some of the other things which have to be considered when deciding if the campsite is for you: having to transport kit up the slope, the distance to the toilets and washing up area, no electricity, etc. For us, it just added to the adventure and feeling we were actually camping rather than just living in a tent.

We've found lots of things to do with the children (aged between 6 and 11)- feeding time with 'Farmer Will' on the site was a must. Other recommendations are the walk to Bucklers Hard from the campsite, the Otter and Wildlife Park, Hurst Castle, the museum in Lyndhurst (for a rainy day) and the Outdoor Sea Water Pool in Lymington.

We're already hoping to go back again next year (the children were planning it before we'd even finished our trip!) and try out the new site in Sussex this summer.

Very friendly and helpful people running the site.

A friend was using the group accommodation for a wedding so that is why we choose the site.

It was nice that they provided fire pits, but the pitches were quite close together.

Also on Good Friday there was noticeable noise from the farm machinery which took away from the tranquillity and was not great. I don't mind - and expect cockerels at a farm site but sawing/hedge cutting or whatever it was, was annoying. You could also here road noise all though this was not to bad.

At £20 per person per night its an expensive site, but many in the new forest are.

A wonderful campsite - and the first we've been to that we'd say is one to return to. We are already discussing possible dates for next year!

Great for kids - very safe, a large area to fly kites / kick a ball as well as a brilliant adventure playground. A must is to book the 'Meet/Feed the Animals' session - this was loved by all the kids in our group (10!). Very hands on, and informative.

The facilities were clean and a short (5 minute) walk from the campsite.

Friendly and helpful staff. A beautiful spot.

Great location, easy walk to Beaulieu. Enjoyed being effectively on a farm and seeing the animals. Fire pits great fun. A few gripes - no hot water one morning and only 2 showers per sex not enough, particularly since (understandably) parents with small children use showers en masse leading to long waits. Also feel very expensive - renting a cottage in France would be cheaper! However, Matt and Zoe very helpful. Echo comments re large group of adults - we were there at the time too!

My partner and I stayed on your campsite in August 2013. It was the first time we had being camping together and it certainly will not be the last. We just loved it and it was great to have the communal fire pit to ourselves. There was a little mix up with our booking to start with but the staff were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble and it was sorted. Emily and others were fantastic. The location of this campsite is in the lovely Beaulieu village, such a beautiful area of the New Forest. Great walking distance to Beaulieu motor museum too. We will definitely be staying again in the future. The shower and toilet facilities were clean and it’s great to have a campsite where you can actually do camping the proper way by having a fire in the evenings.

We were looking for an ideal campsite for our grandsons, 4 and 5 years old, to experience their first time proper camping holiday and Embers has definitely ticked all the required boxes. Camping in the orchard without the car was great and the boys could wander quite safely within the orchard and field next to it. Being able to cook on an open fire was a new experience for the boys, especially when they could cook their own supper of chicken parcels which were hugely successful and of course they enjoyed toasted marshmallows. The farm offers a wonderful opportunity for children to learn about the different farm animals and feeding them was great as was being able to milk a goat! Having a playground on site is also a great idea.

It isn't too far to walk into Beaulieu to buy an ice cream and also visit the motor museum or perhaps take the riverside walk to Bucklers Hard to visit the museum there and take a boat trip on the river.

The toilets and shower rooms are kept clean but are a little far away when you have two small children who seem to need to visit the toilet much more than usual!

The staff were extremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble.

Will definitely return with our grandsons as they had the most wonderful time even if it was only for 2 nights.

What a lovely week we had at Embers!

Things we particularly enjoyed were the secluded feel of the campsite, the secret paths through the woods which my kids loved, the blackberry picking from the bushes at the side of the paths. The fact that you walked past the farm animals on the way to and from the loos was thoroughly enjoyed by the children but did mean trips took longer than usual! Cooking on the fire was of course brilliant.

Feeding the farm animals was very friendly and educational, run as it was by Lisa. All children got to feed, muck out, collect eggs and hold a baby chick - they loved it!

The site welcomed groups of campers which was a very pleasant change to some campsites I have visited in recent years. Perhaps the fact that there is no electric hook ups and no cars on the camping ground encouraged a quieter clientelle.

My only criticism was a cool shower and uncertainty as to whether kids were allowed to play in the playground as it seemed to belong to the outdoor centre. They would appreciate it if they could.

First trip with our kids (8, 6, twins 3)and had a ball. Great campsite, massive pitches and we had a big tent 8 men. The farm animals are such a bonus the kids loved the feeding them, mucking out of the pigs, collecting the eggs and milking the goats! The fresh vegetables are brilliant too. Lovely staff on hand to answer all your questions, and even to sit and chat around the communal campfire after hours. Very clean facilities, 3 toilets and 2 showers per sex (ladies also has a hairdryer). What more could you want.
