Not at all impressed with this place. I emailed to ask if I could book and was told that there would definitely be room so I didn't need to book. I sent a begging email because we would be arriving late and was again assured that there would be lots of space.
We arrived hot and sweaty after a long drive. Payment was demanded in advance and we were told to go and find somewhere to pitch. There was nowhere. The site was fuller than Brighton beach on a hot sunny day. We returned to reception and asked them to find us a pitch or give us our money back.
We ended up in the owners garden which had the advantage of being a good sized, private pitch but the disadvantage of being quite a distance from the area we were given to park (the owner made other people move) up and down several steps.
On a positive note the toilet facilities and the washing up area were very impressive. The restaurant was alright although the staff were not at all friendly. Rude might be a better description. For the first time ever we did not tip although I was tempted to leave 10cents to make a point.
It is a shame. The site looked like it could be good. It was easy enough to get into town from there and wander around but it was jam packed full with guy ropes crossing over each other and no room to swing a cat
This is a large site and a bit confusing as there are no marked pitches. You just pitch anywhere. You may need a long power cable. There are a lot of seasonal caravans. The site is along the river and there are some river pitches. There is a gate through to the river path but you need to get a card from reception and pay a 20 euro deposit. The showers are excellent with loads of hot water and are free.
The site is around 8 km from Cologne. You can walk along the river which takes almost 2 hours but it is flat and quite a pleasant walk. There is a bus apparently around 500 metres from the site that will take you to the train station to get into Cologne but we preferred to walk so didn’t use it.
There is a hotel attached to the campsite and owned by the same people. It has a nice bar and restaurant. We went there twice and enjoyed the food. There is also a bar and beer garden but wasn’t always open. There is also a Thai restaurant about 5 minute walk along the road which was excellent.
There is a town called Rodenkirchen around 30 minutes walk from the site. It has decent shops and café’s and there is a Rowe’s supermarket. There is also a nice market on Saturday and a smaller one during the week (not sure which days).
If you are from overseas you may need to get a green environmental sticker. This is required to enter a lot of towns in Germany. It can be obtained from the Town Hall in Rodenkirchen for 5 Euro.
We drove to a small town called Zons which is around 30 minute drive. It is a pretty walled town.
Lovely setting, on the banks of the Rhine. No marked pitches so a free-for-all in getting pitched. Didn't matter how full the site was, more people kept arriving and squeezing in! (we were there over a bank holiday weekend). Staff pleasant and spoke English. Facilities up a flight of stairs and were clean and modern and seemed well maintained. Would recommend for a one or two night stopover for cologne.
