Just returned from a lovely bank holiday weekend at Whinfell Farm. Very basic, simple, site, but this was reflected in what we thought were very reasonable prices. Very good location, and easy to find.
The site is set out in a few paddocks, each surrounded by hedges, providing some good shelter and privacy. Some trees beyond the hedges would help with shelter if needed, but as it happens we had no wind this trip. Fabulous views all around. The site is fairly flat. We had some trouble pitching as the ground was hard - fortunately we had some rock pegs. Pitches were a reasonable size, but not fixed so they could be varied to accommodate units of differing sizes. On arrival, if the manager was not immediately available there was a mobile number to ring and he came as soon as he could. Reserved pitches were marked with stakes, and those who had booked could generally just pitch where they wanted. We were able to pitch up next to our friends. It was full over the weekend we visited, but it was a bank holiday, with glorious weather for a change.
There are a small number of pitches with electricity, and the manager helpfully offered to loan campers very long leads if there was a problem reaching the electricity points.
There are separate female and male washrooms - only 2 toilets, 2 showers and 2 sinks in the ladies, which was sometimes a problem as the site was very busy, and some people seemed to take ages at the sinks! 2 sinks, 2 showers, 2 cubicles and 2 urinals for the men. The showers were free. Soap was provided at the sinks, but take your own hand towel. The sinks had mirrors, and there was a separate mirror with a hairdryer. There were plenty of hooks for hanging your belongings/towels/toilet bags etc. Take your own toilet paper at busy times, as this ran out regularly. The water was sometimes not very warm - we had to time our visits to the showers carefully. The facilities were mopped down each day, but with a lot of people on site, and quite a few children, they did get muddy at times.
There were 2 washing up sinks with plenty of space, and a drinking water tap.
The toilet and washing facilities could definitely do with some updating, but they were functional enough.
There was enough space in the middle of our paddock for the children there to run about or kick a ball a bit.
The Wheatsheaf Inn is a 10 minute walk away in Lorton, selling a good variety of food and drink. It also has a small beer garden, and its own little camp site, but we preferred where we were. It is important to book a table - it was very busy.
There is a very small village shop in Lorton, but we did not use it.
Keswick and Cockermouth are not very far away by car, and there are many walks in the area. Some of our party climbed Haystacks one day, and walked around Buttermere the next - gorgeous ice creams as a reward at the end! A few campers had bikes and headed off for a few hours ride each day.
We would definitely return.

Not a farm site, but adjacent to a farm whose interesting poultry make themselves at home round the site, this site has the feel of the farm sites of my youth. Somewhere to go to be in quiet countryside.
If you want a five star facilities block, marked pitches and WIFI access chose to be among the seried ranks of pitches in the crowded sites of Keswick.
If you want something a bit different in a quieter part of the Lakes I would recommend Whinfell Hall.
There are two very sheltered fields, one with some hook ups, and I understand camp fires are allowed in a specific area near the stream.
There are two further fields, mostly gently sloping. The bridge is now rebuilt linking the site to Lorton village and the food at the pub there is excellent. Swallows still nest under the eaves of the washrooms.
There is hot water in the sinks and the showers work on a 20p meter, one coin is more than enough. Hair dryer, washing machine, and I think a fridge for ice packs. All you need, but far from smart in appearance. We paid £14 a night for a campervan and two people. Dogs are allowed, but only those of resident campers, not of guests.
For me Romeo and Juliet stole the show. They are enormous and repulsive looking turkeys who waddle slowly round the site. They love people and stop to give an amazing display, with their powder blue, wrinkled faces and vivid red daggling necklaces they are fascinating.
Cockermouth is just a few miles down the round, it has a Sainsburys and looks fresh and rejuvenated since the flood damage of 2008. The Trout Hall is grand, but has reasonably priced bar meals at lunchtime.

Yes, it is definitely possible to find your way to this campsite despite the old Lower Lorton bridge still not being rebuilt (October hopefully). We have stayed here many times in the last few years and always enjoyed our time at this little basic but clean and well kept campsite.
This time, every morning and evening, we had the pleasure of the company of two free- ranging hens from the farm next to the campsite, plus five white ducks waddling to and from a sunny patch in the camping field. There was also a little Jack Russell terrier pup who came to see us - and we bought some gorgeous eggs from the farm too!
It felt very important to come back to Cockermouth as soon as we could after the floods to support the town and visit 'our' campsite again. I can say that Cockermouth itself is coming along so well and most of the shops are back in situ, refurbished and looking very smart. The people of the town are very positive and welcoming, so please consider travelling the bit further distance to come to Whinfell Hall Farm campsite and the lovely little town of Cockermouth again.

I've read the other reviews and have little to add about the location and facilities. This was our first visit since 1994. Before that we used to come here frequently with our children when the site was run by the present owner's parents. The fact that it has not changed substantially adds to its charm.
The facilities are basic but adequate and clean, allowing for the swallows nest which has a charm of its own and, thankfully, has not been got at by 'health and safety'! Plainly work is ongoing as there is some part-completed plumbing and electrical work in evidence.
The site has a well-kept feel and remains delightfully rural.
The main reason for this posting is to encourage people not to give up on finding the main route to the site, via Lorton Low Bridge, is closed because the bridge was washed away last November. Having come to this part of the Lakes frequently since I was in nappies (62 years) I knew how to reach the site by another route and it was worth the effort so don't give up. There is access for both caravans and motorhomes.
You may not be able to take a short walk to the Wheatsheaf in Lorton at the moment but the Kirkstile at Loweswater, around 2 miles away, is hard to beat with its own beer and excellent food.

We decided to brave the unsettled weather and camp one last time this year, choosing to come back to Lorton for about 5th time in so many years. The previous day's horrendous rain had probably sent most tent campers home so we had plenty of room in the two small fields to pitch our great Flashmach III Blackout tent in. We enjoy this site as it is usually relatively quiet and the owner, although not on site a lot, is always friendly. Sadly the facilities are now in dire need of upgrading, even though they are cleaned regularly and O.K. Enough. The pitch prices had gone up again this year, so we were disappointed to see the continuing depreciation of the toilets and showers.
Re: The Wheatsheaf pub, be warned, if it is Thursday evening, it is FISH night and you must book beforehand! Don't think the pub will be quiet because it isn't yet the weekend. We ended up having fish and chips in Cockermouth, but they were excellent, so not too miffed at not getting into the pub - cheaper too!
The extra field for tents was closed off this time (the week before the Bank Holiday) so there wasn't much room for kids to play about. No kids there when we were, but due to the bad weather resuming, we came home before the B.H. Weekend so wouldn't have seen if any arrived for the actual weekend.
Finally, the mud and puddles at the entrance to the right hand field as you approach the office, are really bad and very difficult to negotiate on foot, especially in the dark. It needs some gravel or stones put down to fill the dip!

Stayed over Bank Holiday weekend. Only site with spaces available so didn't expect much but pleasantly surprised. Very quiet and peaceful. Sound of river and bird song each morning. Toilets and showers basic but adequate and only 20p per shower. Location fab - very quiet village with real ale pub 10 mins walk from site -nice beer garden. Well situated for Cockermouth, Keswick and Whinlatter Forest Centre.
Not much noise - a group in adjacent field on Sat night but didn't stop us sleeping and it was Bank Holiday! Owner friendly enough but doesn't live on site (although we didn't need anything).
Reasonable price £22 per night for 2 adults and 4 children in 2 large tents.
Would definitely come here again.

Lucky to find this place had a space left on Saturday of August Bank Holiday (booking not turned up we think) after looping the whole of Borrowdale to find full signs everywhere else.
A nice find. Four seperate fields so noise didn't carry, guided to space by owner so tents not crammed in on top of each other. Mostly walkers here and a few families, so not noisy, quite peaceful. Cosy pub a 5 minute walk into Lorton.
Facilities were pretty basic but adequate, small shower block and a pot wash room with freezer for ice blocks. Take flip flops for shower as floor can get muddy.
Great if you like a fairly isolated, peaceful location, maybe not so great if you want all the facilities of bigger sites.

Stumbled across this site as our original site was fully booked. Good location, there are a number of good walks close by. Pub only 10 minutes walk away. The nearest shops are Cockermouth and Keswick so make sure you bring everything you need.
The facilities let this place down. The toilets and showers are not very clean and there was no loo paper by Sunday. On the plus side it was very cheap £8 a tent a night!

A fabulous, quiet site in north west Lakes I stumbled on a few years ago. 4 fields of varying sizes so no problem with overcrowding. Facilities are basic, so probably not suitable for hyperactive youngsters, but for peace and quiet it is perfect. The shower block is clean though there are a few spiders - best not to look if you're an arachnaphobe like me, and the showers economical - 20p for a long shower. The area for cleaning pots has a swallows nest - great in summer to watch. A cheap site where dogs are welcome. Lots of areas locally to walk, such as Whinlatter forest, and only a short drive from Crummock Water and Buttermere. Also not to far from Keswick - great for a wide variety of Outdoor shops. Pub just a few minutes walk away though have to admit never been.

We have stayed at this campsite on many occasions there are plenty of space as there are a number of fields to choose from a very quite campsite with basic facilities but wonderful all the same. Loads of swallows nesting in the old farm buildings and owls to be seen. If you get your ordnance survey out there are plenty of scenic walks to be had. The pub is only a 10 minute walk away and has the added advantage of serving Jennings and if your there on quiz night they do serve up free food during it,which was a added bonus.
