This site is set in a beautiful location and managed by a very friendly couple.
The views from the site of the Wye area are stunning so if it's peace and relaxation you want then this is the place.
The toilet and shower options are limited so best to get up early but that aside, if you go prepared and self contained you will not go far wrong.
Overall we felt this site compared very favourably with others in the Wye area. The pitches are spacious with a degree of privacy and the surrounding area is well worth visiting.

This is a really beautiful site with the most outstanding views. The grass was immaculate and owners very helpful and relaxed. The facilities were good and clean. There are BBQs to borrow and lots of leaflets for activities in the area.
We were blessed with fabulous weather and sat every evening with a glass of wine enjoying the peace and tranquillity (even with our two children in tow). We went for a lovely long walk from the site and visited the Hay Festival which was brilliant. We will definitely return.

Our first camping experience may be our best?
Speaking to our neighbour; he'd been camping regularly for many years, and in his own words 'this is the best site we have ever been on'
We wanted a peaceful site and there's nothing on the site other than a shower / WC facility. However, despite the site being 'full' it certainly did not feel cramped and I only had to wait a couple of minutes (once) for my morning shower.
The pitch was level on nice fluffy grass and it was well separated from those around us.
This is a beautiful part of England, right on the Welsh border. The views from the site are really nice, but the surrounding countyside is some of the best there is. Hay on Wye is a lovely town, if a little touristy, but it's always worth a visit - Has to be the best view from a car park anywhere in the UK?
A lovely little site, well run by Margaret and Peter who are friendly and most helpful. If you're looking for that little hide away, then go for it, you won't be disappointed and if you are then perhpaps you'd prefer Butlins?

One of the most peaceful and well maintained campsites we've found. It is a geneously sized field but they have not crammed many pitches in, so it seems very spacious. The owners were very friendly and not pushy at all. They had a gorgeous friend little dog, who was inquisitive but very well behaved. The field is gorgeous and the toilets and showers beside a very nice barn that has been kitted out with leaflets, wood for fires, a fridge / freezer, and BBQs to borrow. Hay on Wye is about ten minutes away. We will definitely be going back
9/10
(It only loses one point because there is only one shower for each sex, although the site is small and the chances of queues are low).

Just returned from a wonderful relaxing stay at Penlan. Peter & Margaret are extremely friendly & helpful. The site is very well kept, toilets & showers are cleaned several times a day, there are several touring vans sited for the season, which leaves about 5 pitches available with electric. All pitches command excellent views, there is plenty of tourist information available. The area abounds with wildlife, we woke up most mornings to tapping of a great spotted woodpecker behind our trailer tent. our dog Jess adored the open space of the site & surroundings. The only criticism I have is, because there is only 1 shower & toilet, the facilities become stretched when the site was full, but the inconvenience was grossly outweighed by the beautiful surroundings. We would love to return again to explore more of the area.

Try and use directions from the owner to find the site - our sat nav took us in circles around it!
Great site though, really nice friendly owners - going so far as to offer us accomodation in the farmhouse as the Mother of All Thunder Storms came up the valley on our first night. We stayed out in it - great fireworks show!
Lovely well kept site, toilets and facilities not numerous but adequate and cleaned often.
A really great area for walking, drinking, eating and canoeing! Yes the Wye is a great downstream paddle with lots of pub stops on the way.
A real out-of-the-way jewel of a site, will definitely be going again.

Be careful - we went to this site and decided to move house while there - though not to this site!
Penlan is lovely - you wouldn't even know it's there unless you've got your Sat Nav running. Blink and you'll miss it and other cliches.
The staff are great, facilities ok and you simply setup and enjoy the peace and quiet this site offers. Pitches were spotless - mowed before you go on them, after you've finished and during your stay (only kidding but you never know!). Nothing there for the kids
Hay on Wye is a 10 minute drive away and make sure you visit the Cwmmau Farmhouse which a short walk from the site and can kill an afternoon - and serves lovely teas!
Overall a really quiet site at a good price.

We wanted a night away over the wekend but found a lot of sites were not interested in single nighters. This site was willing to accept our custom. A quick phone call confirmed our booking. We were asked whether we were arriving from east or west as the east route is a 2 mile long narrow track. A note on the gate advisd us where we were to pitch. The site was 90% full and the plot was more than big enough for our Diablo 600. The first thing to stun us was the quietness. As the proud father of a rather loud 8 year old daughter we seemed to be repeadedly telling her to be quiet. The site has a slight slope and the ground was recently mowed. The toilets were close, clean and working. A nearby shed contained leaflets for local attractions, fridge freezer and portable barbeques. There isn't anything on site for the kids so bring your own amusements, there is ample room for badminton and other outdoor games. An adjacent field was intermittantly full of sheep but looked great for kite flying but there was no wind this weekend. If you want peace and quiet then this is the place. Hay on Wye is about 5 miles away over the toll bridge (50p) and a bookworms delight.

June 2005 Spent a peaceful few nights here. Even though the site was full it was very peaceful and quiet. The owners are friendly and helpful. The surrounding area is beautiful with mountains in all directions. If you want to chill and be lazy this is the perfect place, if you want to go out and about to view the surrounding areas this is also the place, can't say more than that. Overall a lovely little site well worth a visit.

May 2005 What a jewel of a site. Secluded, not at all crowded, although fully booke. With panoramic views and convenient for the amazing Hay Festival.
I had decided on Hay for the bank holiday so emailed the site late on Saturday night. I was lucky, there was a cancellation. Three emails later: one with detailed directions to the site attached, I was on my way.
Ok, there's no dancing bears! But there's plenty of room to pitch; a friendly, personal reception; games, leaflets, barbies and lights to borrow and space in a field. Fantastic. Two luxury loos and one shower for the ladies: it's such a small and friendly site that no more were needed.
I heard people laughing at midnight and, listening to Radio 4 first thing in the morning (don't tell everyone - I want to go back next year)!
