We went for a long weekend break and used the site as a base to explore the local area. We visited during the summer holidays, and while the site was busy it certainly wasn't packed - a big plus point!
The site's location is great - 4. 5 miles from Kington, but down some fairly narrow lanes. Be sure to follow their directions (they are very accurate) instead of Sat-Nav otherwise you'll end up down some very tight tracks!
The site was very well situated for us - Kington was a great little town with several decent pubs, a chip shop (good chips!), Spar and various smaller shops. Leominster isn't a bad trek if you want a bigger town and Hay-on-Wye wasn't far either if you're interested in bookshops and antiques.
We walked from the site along the lanes to Eardisley and enjoyed a couple of pints at The Tram Inn - the place was packed with people tucking in to Sunday Lunch. It was a good walk, took us around 1. 5hrs each way but I'd definitely recommend it for the refreshments!
The owners were very welcoming and helpful - showing us to our pitch and suggesting the best way to pitch given that a large group were arriving the day after.
The site is a long narrow field - very well maintained, with a slight slope from one side to the other. Caravans tend to be placed on the higher side while tents were on the lower side along a hedge to an adjacent field. The field was great for walking the dog.
It was difficult to find a completely level patch for our large tent, however the pegs hammered in easily and the ground drained very well. It was good to be able to park the car and trailer alongside our tent.
Despite being quite a windy weekend the site was very sheltered from the wind and although we could hear the trees blowing in the night our tent was quite still. I can imagine a stiff southerly breeze across the fields may not be quite the same though!
Fires aren't allowed, but the site has BBQs available to use which seemed a popular choice for many.
The one thing that let the site down was the facilities. The site wasn't particularly full, however there was often a queue for the showers and toilets (1 x shower, 2 x toilets each for Men & Women). Because they were in constant use they weren't particularly clean and there was quite a lot of grass cuttings and mud dragged in on people's shoes which wasn't cleaned up through much of our stay. It seems some people had taken to wearing shoes in the showers too, as they were found to be filled with grass and mud on occasion! My wife said the ladies shower was quite bad towards the end of the weekend with a lot of mud and hair blocking the drain.
There was also only one washing-up sink, (which was not under cover) and that was particularly busy mid-morning and in the evenings.
It wasn't a huge problem - we just timed our showers and dishwashing to the quieter periods, but had the site been really full it probably would've been a lot worse.
It was a really nice quiet site, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. It was lovely to see the birds flying around and at night it was great to see so many stars and hear nothing except the rustling of the leaves.
It's a shame the facilities let it down but if you're going in good weather or during quiet periods then it would probably be a better experience.

What a lovely site and super welcoming hosts, after several months of being cooped up in Preston with its non stop noise and mayhem we had a wonderfully peaceful stay on the edge of the world, looking over the Black Mountain and the Brecon Beacons. Some walking, some mooching about in Brecon and Builth Wells in the sunshine made this a holiday to remember! We hope to revisit in April and next time take the dogs!

Would recommend this campsite to everyone. The owners are wonderful and friendly, so helpful and nothing is too much trouble. Spacious plot, not too many.
My family and I felt very welcome. Will definitely go again.
Just a little suggestion to the owners, one shower isn't enough and the outside sink for washing up needs better lighting and needs to be a bit higher (breaks your back!) and it also needs a roof/shelter. Other than that, perfect!
The local area is outstanding in beauty. Lots of pubs. Hay-on-wye is a great town to do some shopping and buy local produce.

So relaxing. If it's peace and quiet you want then this is the place.
This small site has beautiful views and is managed by a very lovely couple.
There are limited facilities 2 female toilets, 1 shower & a hand basin; however water temperature & pressure was not a problem nor did I have to wait to use them.
The owner asked us to park our car in the field behind our tent; this meant a very spacious site perfect for our 2. 5 year old son to run around.
There are BBQs to borrow and lots of leaflets for activities in the area; we visited Hay on Wye for some window shopping & the Vintage Steam Rally.
A great weekend!

This is the second time we have stayed here at this lovely 'find' - mainly with a view to book browsing at Hay on Wye, although the area has much more to offer (canoeing on the river Wye, the lovely town of Kington (nearest town for provisions), walking on the Black Mountains: The view from Lord Herford's Knob is fantastic, exploring mid Wales etc.
A very dog friendly site with some lovely walks locally down very quiet lanes and open land, and on the site itself (beautiful meadow and orchard).
The site is enjoyed by people looking for the true camping/caravanning experience, those who enjoy the outdoors and extraordinary views.
Outdoor washing up facilities, barbecues for use at no extra charge and clean toilet facilities. A well-stocked barn containing swift nests, a fridge-freezer for communal use and brochures on tourist activities.
The farmhouse itself is beautiful and the hosts Peter and Margaret, wonderfully friendly and welcoming. Everyone on the site stopped to chat, a real community spirit.
Wildlife is excellent, lots of bird boxes, nut feeders (nuthatches, greater spotted woodpeckers) and swallows feeding on the wing. It also operates as an organic sheep farm - so very in tune with nature. Lots of chirping sparrows and a baby robin sitting on a fence also seen, that did not even move when we got up close to take a picture.
Guests are made to feel very welcome with their names being put on the 'arrivals' board on the field entrance, which is a lovely touch and practical if the owners are out and about attending to farm duties. Peter, the manager, is very easy to deal with on email (how many sites never get back to you? Not so with Peter!)
Thoroughly recommend the site - it is surprising how lovely a camping experience away from traditional seaside locations can be.

We have just returned from this site after spending a long weekend there to celebrate our wedding anniversary and my birthday.
We were made to feel so welcome by Margaret and Peter, they invited us to the farmhouse on our last night there along with some other people staying there, they made my birthday extra special this year.
The facilities are excellent very clean.
This site also welcomed our very boisterous Labrador with open arms.
I cannot praise highly enough the welcome we received at this jewel of a site.
We will be returning very soon.

Came here as a family of 4 at the very end of summer hols. Site was quiet because of that. Found the owners very helpful and friendly. There was a nice hot showers with 2 loos and a basin in male and female, all kept clean. In a barn near the entrance there was a fridge, payphone, bbq's to borrow and various local leaflets. There was also a pot wash area with hot water.
A small, basic site and well worth the £18/night

As everyone else has said, this is a beautiful site with lovely views and friendly owners. The grass is soft and springy - I was walking around in bare feet most of the time. The farmhouse is a beautiful wood-timbered National Trust building. We had lovely clear skies for most of our stay but found need for a hot water bottle at night, even though it was August and as well as our duvet and blanket. It got very cold after the sun went down! The campsite is about 15 minutes (driving) from Kington, where there's a lovely delicatessen and a spa attached to the local hotel. I made use of their summer deal of 1 week's membership for £15. Generally we felt we could have stayed for longer and that we were extremely lucky to have found such a beautiful, peaceful campsite.

We have just come back from such a relaxing stay at Penlan, it was fab.
This was the first time we had been camping with our 2 dogs, and we were a bit apprehensive about it, but it worked out great.
The campsite is perfectly small and kept beautifully.
We have 2 boys aged 9 and 6 years and they had so much space to run about, play rugby etc without getting in anyone's way.
The toilets and showers were clean and there was always hot water.
Margaret the owner was so helpful and their dog is gorgeous.
The scenery is stunning and the surrounding countryside is breathtaking.
We were so lucky when we went there as the other campers were fab. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly and we were sorry to leave.
You do have to drive to places, but that didn't bother us one bit.
