Beautiful tranquil location. Under new management this year who insist on 2 forms to be filled in and prices have risen (the previous owner who still owns the farm has retired). I've visited many times with children and have had no problems. Facilities are fine if a little dated now. Woodland walk on the site plus lots of birds/wildlife. Galloway Arms in Crocketford serve good food and is worth a visit. Great for visiting Galloway coast. Cycling-ideal as lots of 'leafy lanes', plus the 7 Stanes mountain bike centres are within reach. We visited Mabie, Dalbeattie and Kirroughtree mountain bike centres on this visit.

A great site!
It's well signposted from the A75; don't stop at Barnsoul farmhouse but keep going as the site warden lives in a static caravan on the site itself.
We camped and out mates took a 4 berth wigwam. The wigwams are a great idea - basically all you need is a sleeping bag plus your food, pans cups etc.
The camping area is fine - hookups are available with running water. The site slopes in places so larger tents might have to look for a suitable flat spot.
The surroundings are beautiful and there are plenty of little walks straight from the site. Rabbits everywhere and oysterctachers too!
The facilities are very good - the showers are in a new block and are really hot! The cubicles are big enough to get changed in and sit down. The kitchen block has 4 microwaves and two hobs, 2 fridges and a freezer, so you could manage without bringing a camping stove.
All in all - we'll definitely go again and see how it is when it's a little busier but I can't see it being too crowded.
The wigwams are a good idea as has been said for noncampers but also I reckon they'd be good for extending your outdoor season as they're cosy and heated. Avoid the fun of packing away a wet tent!

Stayed here in Aug '10 in one of the bothies for 5 days, but have also stayed here with our tent quite a few times in the last 6 years.
Perfection in Camping. This is our most favourite site for camping.
Very friendly farmer who sells ice creams for the kids and sometimes has a selection of books (donation to charity)
The bothies / wigwams are warm and dry with raised beds and mattresses, electric, lights, a kettle, toaster, fridge, lockable door and bbq / firepit.
Although not to far from the main road you hear nothing but animals here, it is very quiet with nothing but hills and fields for a view.
Facilities,
A little bit outdated but more than ample and always very clean, plenty of toilets (more than 1 or 2 for each sex which most sites seem to have adopted) and free showers in a separate block have shower curtain, hand basins and stool in each cubicle. There is also a portable loo in the top field and electric hook ups/water if you like being a little bit further from the busy spots.
Portable cabin kitchen with hobs, sinks, microwaves and a fridge freezer for your own use, tv/dining room very handy and good washing up facilities, bins emptied regularly
Ponds for fishing use and plenty of woodland walks for the kids, no playground as such unless you count the woods and a little imagination.
Camp fires also allowed! very big bonus for us
Surrounding area,
Very good sized Tesco's on way into Castle Douglas as well as plenty of smaller shops, nearest hospital is Dumfries.
Very good food served at Lochview Motel - as the name suggests overlooking a little loch which is used by water skiers, just the other side of Crocketford.
I have read on the last couple of reviews that the farmer has retired and the prices have risen (Only a matter of time), I only hope the new warden does not change to many things as it would be a huge shame as camp sites like Barnsoul Farm are a dying breed!.
Planning to visit here again in the summer holidays so will leave another review to include the new warden then.

This is a lovely spacious, well established site where you are made to feel very welcome.
OK the facilities have obviously been around for a while but they are perfectly functional and clean. You can pretty much suit yourself here and the owners are very helpful for anything you need - the reception has plenty of tourist info in it and they are very trusting (that you will pay them which of course we did)
Lovely site - no complaints

Good news - all the facilities were good, note that toilets, showers and water supply in buildings are a bit sparse for Bank Holiday weekend numbers of visitors. There are electric hookups if you want electricity. The site is well worth a visit with many interesting features. E.G. Red squirrels, pond, ancient sites.
The area is very scenic, shops are 5 miles or more away. The Solway coast is 20 miles away.
Bad news - unfortunately some folks built bonfires which rained down ash on some tents - not good news to some tent owners who decided to move. I forgot my coat and left it overnight in the kitchen. It was stolen before I went to collect it at 7 a.M. The next morning! Someone got a very nice coat.

Wonderful site - peaceful, secluded and surrounded by wildlife, yet close enough to Dumfries for most shopping needs to be met.
Plenty of EHU's and a couple of fields for tourers / motorvans. Slightly sloping and on grass but this was firm and well maintained so pitching was easy.
Toilets were well heated and kept clean during our 4 night stay. Showers in a separate structure weren't so warm but that was probably more to do with ventilation. The hot water to the free (push button) showers was consistently hot and the individual shower cubicles with mat, bench seat, wash basin and mirror were great. A free hairdryer is also supplied.
For campers, there's a very well equipped kitchen and a dining room with TV as well as outdoor picnic benches.
The service is very friendly but not at all 'in your face' - it's there if you want it.
Our dogs absolutely loved here as there is plenty of woodland walking immediately off the park with no roads to cross. There are sheep around (fenced in) so we chose to keep our dogs on leads at all times, especially as we were there during lambing.
Would definitely recommend Barnsoul and we'll certainly be back.

Really nice secluded spot with only a few tourers, but a few statics and some caravans which were obviously seasonal / permanently sited.
Everything about the place is laid back, we booked for three days and stopped seven, but had to go back on the day of leaving (to pay) as they had just forgotten we were there!
Pitches are of a good size and well spaced (except for one night when a motorhome parked within 6 feet of us despite the field being half empty!), and the fields for tents looked to be in decent nick, although with a couple of steepish slopes. The wigwams on site are a good idea, and looked decent value, especially good if you have friends that don`t caravan / camp that want a break with you.
Nearest shop is a good 2-3 miles away, and the site `shop` has nothing except ice cream so you have to use the car to get anything really.
There is a lot of wildlife to be seen, and walking is good and varied.
Site facilities are O.K, but only just, and are looking very tired. The toilet block is a permanent structure, but showers are in an old static and are in desperate need of updating, and insufficient if the site is busy. We found it easier to use the shower in the van.
For the `tree-huggers` out there, recycling is very much encouraged, and they have a system of reed beds to take care of waste water/sewage, so no formaldehyde based chemicals in your toiltes please!
There is a fair bit to do in a very nice area, you just need to use the car more than might be ideal for some. But it`s worth a look, particularly if like me you have always regarded Dumfries and Galloway as somewhere you pass through on your way to the Highlands. That is doing the place a dis-service.

Just returned from a 3 night stay and found the site perfect for camping. Lots of flat areas means that if you get there early on peak times you can choose a great pitch. Showers were lovely and hot and the cubicles with dressing area in each gave lots of privacy. Toilets cleaned every day and washing up facilities and cooking facilities excellent too. Microwave and toasters available if you need.
Kids enjoyed mini adventures off to the words next to the field, and felt it was afe to let them roam a short distance away from the tent.
Take a good mallet for you pegs as ground underneath surface rocky so a few bent pegs.
If with kids go to Galloway Ice Cream farm for a great day out.

We stayed in a wigwam. The site is lovely, beautiful countryside and the owner is very friendly. It's close to Dumfries and lots of other places to visit. There are nice walks within the farm and the kids loved it. The facilities were not clean and we cut our stay short. All the toilet cubicles had sanitary bins and these were all full. They were still full when we left. Nothing was cleaned during our stay. We have stayed in really cheap and cheerful sites with basic facilities, but they have always been clean. This spoiled it for us. It's perhaps not always like this as we actually booked after reading previous reviews on here that the facilities were clean.

We visited this site for 4 days and had a ball. It has an odd static dotted about but is mostly campers only. It is 6 miles inland from Dumfries in lovely quiet countryside. The toilets and shower blocks are old but spotless with huge cubicles, room for changing, private sink and an abundance of hot water. There is a hairdryer in the ladies free of charge.
The camping fields were very wet, but with the recent weather this was not the sites fault. The owner told us on paying, if the weather got too much and we wanted to go home early just ask for a refund for any days not used. The far field where we were was a good walk from the toilet block but a portaloo was provided which was handy for overnight use. We chose to be in this one because it was next to the woods for walking the dogs. There was also a field with hardstandings.
The site has a huge fishing pond, I think, free of charge, and lots of woodland walks. Ideal for dog owners (no charge for dogs either, or awnings, trailers etc)There is a resident goat which is very friendly. A campers kitchen is provided with room to eat under cover and cook free of charge on the sites own cookers, as well as plenty of dish washing sinks. I saw a small laundry although we didn't use this. There is no shop as such, just the reception which sold eggs if the hens had laid any, and locally made ice cream. You could also help yourself to novels and leave a donation for charity. The owner has an abundance of bikes which all the children seemed to be able to borrow, not sure if there was a charge for this though I dont think so. The site also has wooden wigwams for hire with beds, heating and a kettle provided, I believe these were around £25 per night for a couple. If you stay here it is only a stones throw from Dumfries which is great for shopping, and please dont miss a trip to nearby Annan to visit The Devils Porridge - a church based museum about one of the biggest munitions factories in the area during the war. We spent hours in here, it was facinating. Well worth a visit and we cant wait to go back.
