Our family (2 adults + 4 kids) had a fantastic 3 day break on our first visit to Setmabanning.
The views around the site are simply breath taking. Our tent was a few feet away from the small river at the bottom edge of the site and still only a short walk from the facilities.
The toilets/shower block were very basic but clean and functional. This is a working farm and there were plenty of animals around but not in a bad way.
Everything you could want to see or do is a 5 minute drive away in Keswick and the best supply spot is the Spar/petrol station on the way into town.
This was a fantastic base to explore the Keswick area, was great value for money, in a beautiful setting and we will definitely be back!

Just back from a lovely weekend staying at Setmabanning and exploring the surrounding area. When they say 'on a working farm' they mean it! Dogs and chickens wandering around. We had our two dogs with us and it wasn't a bother. The site is very basic but was all that we needed and for the price (£15 per night all in including hookup etc, no extra charge for the dogs) it proved good value for money. There were lots of seasonal touring caravans that weren't in use, so the place although appearing quite full was actually quite quiet. The hardstanding pitches are in 2 rows (one way in/out) which could be tricky without a motomover I imagine. But the very nice lady who greeted us told us to go look at the pitches and choose one. The toilet/shower block was clean with lots of hot water.
Its about a 10 minute walk into Threlkeld. 'The Sunny' (rebranded from the former Salutation??) is dog friendly, the food was excellent and plenty of beers to choose from. The owner/farmer also gave us the recommendation of The White Horse in Scales (good) plus went for Sunday lunch at The Mill Inn in Mungrisdale.

Setmabanning is set in a glorious location just a few minutes walk from the village of Threlkeld and it's two hostelries. The farmhouse has Blencathra as a backdrop.
There was no tariff displayed. I was charged £10 per night. No receipt was issued nor ticket to put on the vehicle so it was a question of 'fingers crossed' that no dispute arose as to what nights had been paid for.
My pitch was a gravel area shaded by trees - most welcome in the heatwave conditions at the time (but I would imagine could be gloomy in less bright conditions). There were electric hook ups but I have no idea as to the cost of these.
The toilet/shower facilities were dated but kept reasonably clean and plenty of hot water was available. The pot wash had two large sinks again with plenty of hot water - but no draining board and no sink plugs - making a simple job much harder than it needs to be. '
I was able to walk to Blencathra, Clough Head, Calfhow Pikes, Great Dodd, Watsons Dodd, High Rigg and Low Rigg from the site duting my short stay.
The only real negative for me was that most of the touring caravans in the area where I stayed were not in use despite it being 'high season' and I found this conducive to an industrial rather than a holiday atmosphere.
Overall I had a pleasant stay and would visit again.

We have just returned from a 4 night stay at Setmabanning and we loved it. We will definitely return. We wanted to stay longer but the rain came and wasn't forecast to stop for some days so we packed up while our tent was dry!
The campsite is on a working farm, which adds to it's charm but be warned that you will be woken up every morning by a cockrell! and as the tent field is by a little stream you will need midgie spray.
Mrs Hutton is very pleasant and at £5 per night per person; it's great value.
The facilities are basic but very clean, there are 2 showers in both the ladies and gents toilets then a separate wash room with 2 sinks for washing up and a washer/dryer.
If you want to visit the Lake District to do some walking and have back to basics camping then this is the perfect little campsite. If you want a clubhouse and playground to entertain the kids, this is not for you. It's the perfect location for lots of great walks, we walked Skiddaw, Cat Bells, High Spy, round Derwent Water and the 4 mile walk from the campsite to Keswick via the Castlerigg Stone Circle.
The village of Threlkeld is only a 10 minute walk away and has 2 pubs. Both do food, we didn't eat at them so can't comment on the quality of the food but the menu's looked very nice and quite reasonable.
We would definitely recommend this campsite and will definitely be back.

Just back from a fabulous week at this lovely site. As always, the Hutton family were most accommodating and friendly.
The shower and washing facilities have been given a lick of paint, and are lovely and clean, with plenty hot water and always plenty loo roll. We were the only people camping for the first four nights, and it was blissful.
The beauty of this site though, is the fact that even when full it's nice and quiet. I'll be back a few more times this season. The prices are extremely cheap during the facilities and the closeness to Keswick, still only £4 per night for an adult and £2 per night for a child

This site is mainly geared towards statics and seasonal tourers, but worth a visit if you need to be in the area and the other sites are full.
It's located close to the village of Threlkeld which has two excellent pubs and is about 4 miles from Keswick.
Great hillwalking in the area - Blencathra and Back of Skiddaw are definitely worth exploration.
Site facilities are rather basic, but clean and functional. Site owner was pleasant and friendly and did her best to fit us in during a busy period.

We had read everyone's reviews so we knew what to expect.
We booked in and had a hard standing across from the farm house. Enough space for an awning / car. The site was very peaceful and quiet. Expect visits from the hens who run free. There are cows (8 had calves whilst we were there) and sheep.
The site is basic which was fine for us, toilets, very hot showers which we loved and electric hook up. If you want singing and dancing until the early hours this site is not for you. If you want a base and to travel round this site is fine.
We walked in to Keswick via the railway line the walk is about 4 miles but it was a pleasant walk.
A 10 minute walk from the farm will take you to the small village of Threkeld. There are 2 pubs who serve food - starting with breakfast, through to evening meals. They will also provide packed lunches. There is a house next door to the Horse & Farrier pub selling newspapers, bread and milk etc. The footpath for Blencathra is just off the village.
There are regular buses from here to Keswick, adult cost £2.70, we bought the day rovers at £9.50 which can take you as far as Dumfries or Lancaster. We found these to be very good value for money. We found out later that you can buy the Mega Gold Rider for £24.95 which is a 7 day bus pass.
We went down to Glenrhydding and caught the ferry across Ullswater, £12.30 each which allows you to hop on and off or go round the lake. There are plenty of places to eat and drink and several large carparks.
All in all we had a lovely peaceful week.

I have been staying here now for about 18 years, I love the farm very much, very ideal if you like quiet/ farm locations. The showers are basic but when your camping your not at home and close to nature! over the recent years I have been staying in a static caravan these have the basic again but every thing works! I will be back for many years to come.

We spent a week on this site after our original booked site was found to be ankle deep in mud on arrival, the owners made us very welcome we had a pitch on the hard standing opposite the farmhouse
Yes the facilities are basic but what do people expect for the price we only paid £65 for 7 nights including electric and awning I must disagree with the previous reveiwer as the toilets were kept spotlessly clean during our stay and there is now hot water to the sinks in the washroom
Overall we had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay there were a few chickens but what do people expect its a farm , some seem to expect the facilities of a haven site for £3 a night

I agree somewhat with the previous reviewer. . This site is very easy accessed - just half a mile if that from the A66. Now the A66 is just about seen through the trees but hardly heard - the babbling of the stream takes care of that fine. The site is mainly set up for static caravans which keep to themselves and these are (sensibly!) kept uphill from a stream. At the bottom of the site. The camping area is actually along the stream and is a lovely situated site for basic backpacking The ground is hard for pegs though as there is only 3-4 inches of turf on shingle or gravel - use tough pegs! The grass is mown well and there was loads of space for us - even on a bank holiday! There are a few water pipes in the camping area. Good view of Blencathra and the hill behind the camp (and tractors & their kit etc) but then it is a farm, Chickens everywhere! However the facilities were disappointing. Basic facilities I can live with, but dirty and foul smelling facilities when with kids, are not on. The smell in them nearly made me sick. We ended up using public toilets elsewhere. Showers were free but whether you got consistent trickle of hot or cold water was down to luck. Hot water for washing up was taken from the toilet sinks as the wash room had none. Still at £3 per night you can't complain too much as the camping pitches were lovely and very convenient for the A66. Just a shame about those toilets.
