We chose this site because they don't take bookings and they assured us the day before arrival that, unlike other nearby sites, they weren't full over the double Bank Holiday 60th Jubillee week end. We turned up early Sunday morning and there was indeed still loads of space.
The views from the top field are very good but unfortunately the windy wet weather forced us to find shelter under the trees at the top end of the main caravan park. Here the field is fairly flat and well drained but some of the other fields gently slope in places. The toilet and wash facilities are adequate although the 20p showers are a bit of a pain. Expect to use 2 or 3 coins for a decent splash. On the plus side the pitch rates were very reasonable and the coin system prevents shower hogs causing queues at peak times. The water in the sinks is scalding hot to the point of being dangerous. Be warned, because believe it or not, there are no cautionary signs displayed!
An amble into Salcombe along the lanes takes about and hour. Thurlestone, Burgh Island and Hope Cove are all well worth a visit too.
We enjoyed staying at this site and found the owners welcoming and helpful. Every day they do the rounds checking tickets on tents etc and stopping for a chat. A nice touch.

This is my 3rd visit to Alston Farm. I last stayed at the site exactly 1 year ago and submitted a favourable review after that. I notice that no-one else has reviewed since, so I thought I'd put in a quick update after my latest visit to keep people up to date!
The site hasn't changed in the last year. It's still the same relaxed atmosphere. You can't pre-book, so you just turn up, pitch your tent and a chap comes round in the morning to collect your fee's (cash only!).
Similarly, there's no rush to pack up in the morning. I can't imagine that you'd ever have a problem finding a pitch as we've camped there during regatta week and bank holidays and there's always been plenty of space, in fact there's an overflow field (albeit on a slight slope) which has always been completely empty!
There seem to be no rules about where you pitch so perfect for group camping! The grass is in excellent condition and makes for a perfect tent pitch.
Again, we didn't use the official tent area, but camped right at the end of the static caravan area where there's a rather hidden tent area with its own shower block which is always empty for the most part. Showers are still 20p for a few minutes but they are electric so hot and powerful. Although the facilities are basic they are clean and functional.
For visiting Salcombe, I'd recommend parking at the park and ride (5 mins) and then walking down to the town (10-15 mins). This saves you the £5. 80 that they charge you for using the actual bus!
Stay up late and check out the stars! Without any light pollution down there, it's a great place to check out the sky at night!
Alston is a firm favourite with us and we'll keep going back.

This is our 2nd visit to the site, that must tell you something.
Alston Farm is perfectly placed if you intend on visiting the Salcombe area with a tent. It's a 5 minute drive to Salcombe's own beaches (North Sands, South Sands etc) and only 10 mins drive to beaches like Bantham. You can actually walk to Salcombe town itself if you're up for the 30 min (albeit very pretty) walk.
There are 3 areas that make up the site. One smaller tent field on one side of the road, a large caravan section with a bit of tent field at the end of it and finally an upper most field which is usually empty but is on a slope so not ideal for tents anyway. We stayed at the end of the main section, just past all the caravans. You can't book, but we found a space quite easily and this was Salcombe regatta week! There are no marked pitches so you should be able to camp together in a group too.
The facilities are basic (unpainted concrete toilet block!) but everything you need is there, including a tumble drier. Showers are 20p for about 4 mins but are proper electric showers so work well. Everything is kept pretty clean.
There is a small shop selling essentials and a freezer for your ice packs.
Given the amount of caravans on-site, it's actually quite a calm site and doesn't feel too 'touristy'. It's one of those sites where everyone is quiet by 10:30 and up early.
Basic, but clean, reasonably priced and well placed for exploring that area. Will definitely be going again.

What a friendly site, the field was not busy, the staff were fantastic and the experience was commendable. We only stayed one night, but on arrival had the choice of three fields to stay in - all were good. The facilities; shop, toilets, showers were all perfect, the price was reasonable - £14 for two plus two kids - overall no complaints. We cooked a gorgeous breakfast of locally produced sausages, bacon and eggs - scrummy! We will def go back there if we head to Salcombe again.
Trust your sat-nav. It will get you there - but don't follow it if you have a caravan, the route it takes you is tight!

Came down from yorkshire with 2 adults and 2 dogs, it took an age to find it with the sat nav as it took us down every track in devon, However it was a nice site with clean showers and toilets.
We booked for 7 nights but only stayed 2 due to the weather and no fault of the site. I will return but with a trailer tent. Good site for exploring Salcombe and Kingsbridge, single track roads to the site. Shame about the wash out weather but hey ho.

We've just spent a great week at this camp site and I would recommend it. It is a basic rural site with no pool, entertainment, etc. But that was what we were looking for - peace and quiet and considerate fellow campers. Our daughters loved it as there was plenty of space to play and they made friends with children in other tents. Having nice weather for the week obviously helped. Unfortunately although the pitch we were on gave us enough room for our tent with the car parked by the side, it was very slightly sloping and I kept slipping downhill in the night. The systems seems to be your pitch is marked for you if you book in advance but not if you turn up on speck and I would recommend you book during peak times if you want EHU. Also we had to be off our pitch by 11am as someone else was booked onto it for the day we were leaving. Shower/loo block was basic but cleaned twice a day (some hooks near the sinks would be useful to hang towels on while washing/brushing teeth). Showers were spacious with plenty of room for my young daughters to shower at the same time as me. However, there were only four showers so there were queues at peak times as people did not seem to realise there was another shower block they could use in the main caravan area. We needed 20 pences for the showers and as I have nightmare hair a shower was at least 60p a time. The fact that the electricity went off in the shower/loo block at 11pm was not publicised either and we were left brushing our teeth in the dark one night! There's a nice little shop on the site that's open for a couple of hours in the morning and evening. There's somewhere to freeze ice packs. All the staff are friendly and helpful. This site is well situated for exploring the South Hams and South Devon which has some pretty towns and villages and lovely countryside, as well as tourist attractions if you want them - information on these was available in a hut next door to the site shop. There are some great beaches within a short drive - we particularly liked Bigbury. The nearest village is Marlborough (couple of minutes drive away) and there's a garage in the village where they bake their own croissants, pain au chocolate, etc. Fresh every day - the smell when you walk in is to die for! All in all I would recommend Alston Farm.

A wonderful camp site with a relaxed owner. Excellent basic facilities throughout the site and always kept clean. On arrival you can pick your own location within 3 ample sized fields. There are no restrictions on the amount of room you need and children and dogs are free. There is a shop open morning and evening for essentials and great advice for what to do in the area. Phil (owner), Ann and Mike who help run the site are friendly and extremely helpful. The location is fabulous, not far from several beaches and small towns, so no shortage of places to visit. There are some great dog walks in the area including one on the camp site. Once a week there is a hog roast and a fish and chip van arrives on a Saturday night. All in all a fabulous fortnight and we are looking forward to returning next year to explore more of this beautiful area.

On booking the camp site we were very pleased to hear a charge of £13 per night and felt that it was very reasonable! We arrived midday and nobody present at reception. After a phone call to them, we were told approximately where our pitch was and we could check in the following day. We were in the overflow field with unisex toilet block and shower, 20p for around a five minute shower, acceptable cleanliness. We paid the following morning and the price had risen to £15 per night. When we asked for information about the site, we were given a leaflet which contained a tariff for 2004! All in all acceptable camp site, well maintained, not really for the motor home person unless it's a one night stop over or you're prepared to walk or move the van. Lovely peaceful site, would stop there again.

We stayed here 20th July 2007 for two nights, We found the owners & staff very friendly and helpful. This is one of the better sites we have stayed at in a while, and it was cheap they even let our dog stay for free! Apart from having to pay 20p for the shower everything else was rather reasonable including the shop on site.
The other thing that we found good was that when we asked what time that we had to be off site on the last day, the owner just turned around and said it didn't matter what time we left.
I would recommend this site to anyone as it is cheap all year around, and has a very friendly and nice atmosphere around the site, a definate thumps up for this campsite.
