Just returned from 5 nights at Barnard castle CCC site. I had a friends birthday party in Bishop Auckland on Saturday night and I knew this was a great site from a previous visit and only about 25 minutes away.
Decided to turn a party into a holiday. Lovely welcome from the warden, advised to take my pick of the pitches.
Over the 5 nights there were only around 15 units on site each night.
There are now safari tents at the top end of the site since my previous visit.
Toilet block is kept well, cleaned daily. Water points easy to access. Refuse is up a corner with general and recycling bins. There is no road noise, only thing that was annoying was crows cawing in the trees at the back of the site. There are a lot of them to wake you up first thing in the morning.
Bowes museum isn't far away and well worth a visit. I decided to head further North to Vindolanda one day and got caught out by snow on the return trip, in hindsight perhaps a little too far away across the moors.

Great site nothing to dislike.
The town itself has great food stops and we did some walks as provided by tourist information in the town.
Site is well maintained.

Standards have overtaken C &. C Club. We joined the Club about 14 years ago when C &C Sites were of a standard well above average and were competitively priced.
It is difficult to get away from the conclusion that things have changed and the club has not kept up in many areas, except for the continuing excellence of Site staff.
Barnard castle is a good example, toilets and other facilities are clean and kept scrupulously so but are quite long in the tooth. The Site is well placed in the middle of fields and only ~1. 5 miles by footpath from town. There's lots of space and hard standing.
The site wifi has 'improved' but only to the extent that it's now free and you're not paying for its unreliable performance.
Summer prices are high, we paid £42/night for a van, 2 over 65 adults and serviced pitch.

Spent 4 nights here, the site was well laid out and level. The site is well, maintained and clean.
The toilet block is immaculate and all the facilities were well kept.
The wardens were very friendly and welcoming and eager to assist. (Even when herding the sheep that came through the hedge to visit).
There is nothing negative about this lovely quiet site.
I would recommend this to anyone.

Thought this site ok
In a lovely location and did not suffer any previous problems like smells or electric tripping out and our TV signal was excellent,
Yes the 3/4m approach road is narrow/bumpy and the waste bins are a long trek depending where you are sited.
There is a bus service at the end of the approach road though we didn't use it preferring the easy and picturesque walk to Barnard castle with a taxi back.

This was our sixth stay on this site but our first visit in four years.
The site mangers were very friendly and the facilities were kept very clean.
We like the site because of the area that it is in and it is fairly close to Barnard castle.
There are a few issues (none of which would stop me using the site again) which may cause problems for some.
The access road is much more pot holed than I remember and needs to be taken slowly.
The bins, for many campers, are the furthest away that they possibly could be-there are none near the water points-and the lids to these bins are very heavy.
There is a farm very close to the site and this has two huge barns which contain pigs and the smell from them sometimes drifts onto the campsite depending on which way the wind is blowing.

The road up to the site was narrow and full of horse muck all over the van. The pitch was very level and big.
There are trees to the side to shelter from the wind.
The facilities are good quality and clean.
The bins are at one end of the site and are quite a walk. There is only two water points for the hole site.
We could not get satellite or Freeview but internet TV is good. We had a car parked on our pitch from the pitch at the side.

Really enjoyed our stay here. The staff were really friendly, facilities were clean, if a little dated, and the grass pitches were nice and level. There was a good play area for the kids too.
We enjoyed the short walk into town and drove to visit High Force during our stay. The pub at High Force is also well worth a visit and is child and dog friendly.
The only drawback for us was the lack of a bath in the parent room. There wasn’t even a shower in there, but the staff very kindly gave us a key for the disabled shower room which was really helpful for showering our 1 year old.

This Camping and Caravanning Club site conforms to expectations. The location is nice and quiet (not along a roadside like another locally), although it would be a long walk into town, and there’s no buses on a Sunday.
The pitches are a reasonable size and are accessed via a tarmac road network. Sadly, the hard standing pitches are not fully level, so campervans and motorhomes mostly use ramps to correct a little.
The facilities block is spacious, with plenty of loos, showers and wash rooms for the numbers of people on site – the site was full during our visit. Cubicles have 6 hooks AND a stool and additional light, the water is lovely and hot. There’s also washing up sinks, albeit the normal massive sink with low water flow (so it’s hard to fill) and only a single draining board, so pots in and out on the same side. There’s a well situated motorhome service point – always a great bonus of club sites.
The greatest frustration this weekend was the electric hook-up, which was over-loaded (thanks to visitors who don’t seem to understand that you can’t run numerous heaters, hair dryers etc. in a caravan without blowing the circuits… not only for yourself, but for others.
Understandably, the on-site staff were unable to keep replacing fuses all night, and that left a large proportion of visitors without light or heat from 9:30pm until long after breakfast. We were lucky, on the second night, the electric stayed on in our area, but others were not so lucky.
More could be done to inform visitors about reasonable loads and the risk of total power loss overnight, perhaps then a few more would take a bit more caution. So take the precaution of having secondary heat if it’s going to be cold overnight and don’t rely on charging anything over night.
