A quiet but popular site which is kept immaculate by the helpful wardens. The site was full when we visited for a dog agility show but the pitches were spaced well apart and we weren't overlooked. The surrounding area is well worth exploring and Barnard Castle has all the shops pubs and restaurants you will need, as well as some rather good antique shops.

Just stayed here at Halloween for the weekend,
Stayed on hard standing due to wet weather. Warm welcome from staff on arrival shown to pitch and guided back onto pitch as I was by myself. All the paths/roads and pitches have been upgraded since I was last here and its great improvement. I was meeting friends at site and we had all been put together(which we requested on booking)all facilities on site were spotless even with the wet weather.
Small play area on site.
Short drive into the town which has lots of local shops/café bars etc and the castle well worth visit.
We will use this site again in the future.

Lovely well maintained site, facilities warm and spotless as always on Caravan and Camping sites. Adequate dog walk on site for toileting purposes.
Great short walk through the woods to Barnard castle. Its a very pretty town with plenty of independent shops which I always appreciate, not so my husband who gets to stay outside holding the dogs!
Weather was very mizzley but made for some atmospheric photographs of the castle and surrounding area. We visited High Force water fall during a downpour. Hamsterley forest offered lovely long walks for the dogs.
The downside to our visit was the almost constant odour of Pig poop from the neighbouring farm, yes when in the countryside you can expect the odd farm yard smell, most of which never bother us, but pig poop is rather pungent. I do love Pigs so forgave them :).
Would we return? probably, if going further North to break up a journey, but not for a more than an overnight stay, lovely scenery but nothing spectacular to make us return, we are lucky to have similar on our doorstep. After saying that I do like to visit new places and feel extremely lucky to have the opportunity to do so.

Nice site, very clean and well-maintained as one would expect from a C&C club site.
However, site is branded as a 'top site for dogs', which it is not. The dog walk is a fairly short, narrow and muddy path which runs under the trees round the back of the site. There is no room to run properly or play with a ball etc, and dogs are meant to be kept on a lead. While this may be fine for some, it is no good for my energetic spaniel. Dire warnings about the aggressive dogs loose on the farm through which the footpath into the town runs put us off from going that way.
We also had a large group of campers (several tents and caravans) behind our caravan who were very noisy into the small hours with no regard to others. The no-noise rule clearly is not enforced here. More worryingly, there was a small group of children building quite a large fire on a windy night in a small space between their awning and a windbreak, with no adults in sight! This is not the fault of the site, but perhaps a more visible presence might have encouraged some more responsible behaviour.

Stayed here for four nights and during this time the site was extremely quiet, doubt if it was ever a quarter full. The site wardens were very helpful and friendly, the site was always clean and tidy and offered hard standing or grass pitches. Toilets and showers were never busy and always immaculately clean as were the other facilities. The entrance road leading off the main road is a bit narrow and hilly. The town and the castle are worth a visit as is the surrounding countryside.

Lovely quiet location ! The wardens were also lovely (great chat with the Geordie ex Army assistant warden).
Great large pitches and clean toilet/shower block.
Great location away from the main road but easy access on foot into Barnard Castle (in good weather, muddy otherwise). We would definitely return. Well spread out and grass was cut daily !
The only criticism we can think of is the access road up to the site entrance is tight and winding. Try not to be on the side where the farm access road is as it is in constant use with farm traffic.

Used the site as a stopover for one night on a long trip, turned up without booking (having gone into the CC site by mistake: it's members only so we were turned away). It's close enough to the A66 to be convenient, far enough away from the main road to be very quiet & peaceful. As usual on CCC sites, one of the friendly wardens cycled with us & gave us a choice of pitches and advice on local walks. Hardstand & EHU for two CCC members over 55 cost £22 midweek in August, less than we'd expected. The hair drier was free! The dog walk through the woods beside the site was very good, though it was muddy due to horse riding. The Warden rightly advised us to keep our dog on a lead and stay on the path if we left the designated dog walk, in order to avoid the nearby farm as the dogs there are not pets & are territorial. We would be very happy to come back again for a stopover or longer stay.

Beautifully maintained site which is nice and peaceful. The chippy van that visits site is worth the wait as the food is lovely. The town of Barnard Castle doesn't come across as a tourist town which makes it all that much better. If your not a member of English Heritage the castle is worth the entry money. All in all we'd recommend visiting Barnard Castle and we've already said we'd go back.

We went to this site in June just after the high winds that weekend. We travelled North on the A1 to Scotch Corner, then the A66. We took the 1st turning, approx. 13 miles from A1 that said Barnard Castle - DONT TAKE THIS ROAD, go to next turning, opposite a farm shop (I think) with grass roof, as this takes you straight to the traffic lights just outside Barnard Castle, go through traffic lights then as you go up the road you pass the Caravan Club Site which is on the road side. Approx half a mile further there is a sign for the Caravan & Camping Club Site on the left, take the left turn and around half a mile up a winding lane to the site. There is passing places in the lane if something should be coming the opposite direction.
Check in was smooth, we had booked a hard standing pitch and asked for one with sun in the afternoon, we were shown a few pitches and decided on one on the hedge side opposite the toilet block then next field down. It was a lovely pitch, room for caravan, awning & parking car to the front. It was still quiet windy when we arrived around 1:30pm so decided to wait to see if winds would drop, which did nr tea time, so we put up our awning then.
The following day was cloudy, we walked into Barnard Castle from the site, turn left as you leave the site entrance and left again into the lane (this lane ran at the back of our pitch) walk toward the farm and go into the farm yard (public right of way), then head right, there is arrows pointing the way, once out of the farm yard you walk between fenced off areas that had horses in the fields either side. You then walk through a small wooded area out onto a gravel path until you come to the main road, cross over the road & a bridge, you can see Barnard Castle from here, then turn right to walk into Barnard Castle, or go uphill, this walk will bring you out in the main square of the town. I think it's approx. 4. 5 miles there and back. After the cloudy start the sun came out the following day and we had it all week.
The site was lovely & quiet except when the warden was on his grass cutter which was nearly every day, but only for about 10 minutes at a time, so no big deal. The showers was clean and lovely & hot. We really enjoyed this site & will be back. The Fish & Chip van came Friday & the Pizza van Saturday, both times there were queues for the food. The Pizza van had a proper wooden oven to cook your pizza. You sometimes had a tractor or wagon down the lane at the back of our pitch going to the farm, other than that, heaven.
We have only just joined The Caravan & Camping Club, we were already members of the Caravan Club, and although we did not look around the CC site I would still stay here due to it being half a mile from the road, so peaceful. As a pair of young OAP's we also get discounts on the price paid, I think it would have cost around £7 per night more at the CC site.
We had lunch in the Three Horseshoes pub in Barnard Castle, a lovely pub & the food was nice too.
One day we went to High Force, parked in the car park £2 for car, & I think £2 each to walk to High Force waterfall, you get your tickets from the shop in CP. We called at Middleton on Tees on way home and got some lovely sausages from the local butchers for our BBQ, they were lovley, the burgers were too thin though. We also had a coffee at the coffee shop next to the Co-op in the village.
Another day we went to a garden centre, another we parked at Bowless Visitors Centre, car park charge was voluntary, then walked through wood to Horseshoe Falls & Gibsons Cave, I really like this walk. From here we walked down to Low Force, there were kids jumping off the bridge into the water, under supervision, the rafting down the falls. Also from here you could walk to High Force 1. 5 miles which we will do on our next visit. All in all a lovley area & site, we will be back.

The site is located 2 ¼ miles from Barnard Castle on at an exposed elevated location. Trees and bushes do afford some shelter from the prevailing wind. Generous sized pitches and friendly staff make up for this minor shortfall.
A public footpath runs parallel to the site and affords a mile long riverside/woodland walk into Barnard Castle. However this footpath goes through the adjoining farm land/property with untethered farm dogs that have been known to bite walkers. This issue is of local concern and the site warden informed me local Police have been involved. One to watch out for, especially if you are out walking with young children or dogs.
The central toilet block, whilst functional is quite dated and could do with a refurbishment. Reception has some basic provisions and can provide a daily paper if ordered in advance.
Barnard Castle has numerous eateries, pubs, a Morrison’s Supermarket plus Co-op and local shops, live music at the Old Well Inn, plus the truly amazing Bowes Museum.
