We visited this site as a base to visit Shaftesbury and the surrounding area and the only problem with its location is that it is on a straight and very fast stretch of the A30 so the traffic noise was very loud.

You have to enter and leave with care due to the fast traffic. The site facilities are basically behind a petrol station and were a bit old fashioned but fitted with modern showers that worked well.

The Site is level and very pleasant looking and there is a cold water washing station which saves you going up to the sink ant the petrol station.

Kingston Lacy and Badbury rings are 40 mins away and Gold Hill in Shaftesbury is worth a visit.

We were very pleased to get onto this site at short notice due to our booked site being water-logged. The backdrop of Blackmoor Vale is pretty, but it wasn't pleasant going for a shower in the back of a petrol station. The water points were few and very far between, requiring extra-long hoses, or to move the vehicle. The toilets and showers were clean but very old fashioned. And the price was the most we had paid all holiday (£8 more than we had paid anywhere else). The food at the nearest pub is fabulous - but you take your life in your hands to walk there, as the road is very fast, and there is no footpath (we were warned of this).

Having rung in advance to book our 34ft long RV onto the site, we were told they would find a space somewhere. They did, at the entrance to a beautiful meadow, ideal dog walking but some distance from the hook-up and alongside the entrance track. The site is off the A30 and some of the facilities are accessed at the rear of the Murco garage, not always ideal but having the garage shop available was very handy. The site is not set up for RV's or Motorhomes which 'dump' from underneath as the main provision is a raised basin, however facilities were made available for us albeit on a slope so we couldn't empty our tanks 100%.

The site is priced on size and was the most we have ever paid for a pitch.

The staff were extremely helpful providing an extension for the hook-up and greeting us even though we were late arriving.

The new toilet block is a great effort and certainly very clean, however the design is not quite right and more hanging facilities are needed in the showers. The old toilet block is also very clean, but out of the ark with high level cisterns and chain pull - takes you back! We didn't use the laundry, it looked fine but no notices as to how to purchase a token or how long anything takes.

In fairness they were gearing up for the season so I'm sure these minor things will be rectified. As a location to visit Shaftesbury, Gillingham and the Blackmore Vale I'm sure you won't do better.

RV owners, we found it very difficult to find a location to take anything longer than 28ft in this area.

We have just returned from a long weekend and the Blackmore Vale and I must say that we had a fantastic time. We booked this site as our daughter lives 20 minutes away and it had hard standing pitches, which over the new year and with the amount of recent rain was hard to get.

Upon arrival we were greeted by the warden who was the friendliest person you could want to meet, she showed us our pitch, the facilities and even invited us to the new years eve party for the staff.

There are 2 toilet blocks, the old one which we didn't use and the new block, and wow nice clean showers and toilets, perfect.

Our pitch was a fully serviced pitch so even though it is not advertised as such and we hooked up to the water and the grey waste which meant no having to empty any aquamasters or wastemasters.

The added bonus was they had a burger van arrive on new years day so there was no cooking or washing up for breakfast before we left.

People have said about the noise from the road, all I can say is 'what noise?'

They have also started glamping and bmvcaravans also hire out tourers, well worth the visit and thank you for a wonderful new year.

A lovely warm welcome when we arrived was just what we needed after a long journey, we were shown to our pitch and given all the information needed as to where to sign in and where everything was. We were offered help in putting up our tent as it is large by the lovely Maddy.

The new shower block was spotless and stayed that way for the week we were there, the pitch was flat and clean with plenty of room for our tent and gazebo and our car.

Everyone was friendly and we spent some memorable evenings sitting having a chat with Maddy whom should be awarded team member of the decade.

A super base for exploring the area and only twenty minutes from longleat safari park. The staff were always interested in our daily trips and recommended places to visit and told us the best route to get there.

The local pubs are good value on food and the farm shop down the road was very good.

We had one of our teenage daughters with us who was entertained by Maddy and even got to feed the fish at the lake. I would recommend to anyone.

Just back from a one night stay here as a base to visit Shaftesbury. Site very quiet - it's flat and grassy. It wasn't clear where to check in - we went in the signed entrance but appears that you check in at the petrol station, behind which the site is located.

Good position for visiting Shaftesbury. Because it was wet we were advised to park up on the gravel road - excellent and the site provided an extra long cable to connect to the electrics.

The touring area is separated from statics by a hedge, which meant we were not constantly looking at them. Although beside the A30 the road noise did not keep us awake.

There are brand new showers and toilets, which are some of the best I have seen. Glass walled semi circular shower cubicle, lashings of hot water (only downside was the lack of any temp control - maybe an issue with small children) and plenty of dry space for towels etc.

Also the most impressive disabled/baby changing room I have seen on a campsite. I hope the dishwashing facilities will also be upgraded - they consist of one sink in the open! Overall a good place for a night or two en route.

This site does have great potential as there are lovely surroundings and great walks from the site. It has a lovely lake to walk around and a shop for essentials along with hook up for those that need it.

The toilets and showers really let it down - they need updating. The toilets were kept clean but it was a shame they were in a different block to the 2 showers for ladies. These showers are not private as there is only a curtain and there is nowhere to store your bits and bobs securely while you shower. Unfortunately the showers were just a dribble.

Would only return once the facilities were updated.

A nice level grass site, not too many hook up points but we were lucky enough to get one. As previous reviewer's have said it is quite a walk to the toilets that are old and still awaiting the new block. There are only two showers like the toilets in desperate need of the new block.

The shop at the garage has all of the essentials and even has a caravan sales area where spares etc can be purchased.

If the new toilet/shower block could be situated closer to the camping area this would be a great site, likewise the entrance needs better signage.

We would return if and when the new block is constructed.

We've just returned from a very enjoyable fun weekend at Blackmore.

Our family stayed for 2 nights in two of their Bell Tents - which we hired. (This is a new venture for the site - along with tepees).

The owner, Rob, is nice & friendly - and very keen to please his customers.

In the hire - a small cooking stove/plates etc, picnic table & chimenea were included in the furnished tent. (could do with a washing up bowl)

We loved it - especially the chimenea. Rob even lent us a BBQ.

The site is very spacious. There's lots of room for the children to play - there's no need for a playground. Yes, you can hear some traffic noise from the main road - but it didn't bother us at all.

The only downside was the toilet & shower facilities - which are very basic & lack privacy.

The 2 ladies basins are open, and the 2 ladies showers have curtains (not doors).

All in all - a lovely quiet site, which has great potential. Once the toilet & shower facilities are updated - we will definitely be back.

This has the potential to be a nice site set in a lovely area of Dorset. The current toilet and shower facilities (separate blocks just outside of the campsite adjacent to the garage) leave quite a bit to be desired however there are plans for a new block in 2011

The site entrance is a bit hard to locate in the dark (left hand side of the garage). The manageress is very welcoming and there is a reasonable stock of essentials in the garage at the front of the site. You can hear some road noise which didn't bother us as the weather was too bad to sit outside but we do prefer quiet camp sites.

Would probably not visit again before the new shower/toilet block is built.
