I camped at this site in July. There's no need to book; you just turn up and the warden collects the fee in the evening or morning. For me, my tent and car it was a mere £8 - excellent! For backpackers it's a even cheaper at £5! It's a nice, well kept and spacious site and not too busy as Kilvrecht is a bit out of the way for most. There are plenty water points and disposal facilities. There are well marked forestry commission walks around the area and you're only about 1. 5 miles down a forestry track from Loch Rannoch or about 3 from Kinloch Rannoch where there is a great wee café and very well stocked shop with lots of camping necessities (including midge repellent which you WILL need!) On my visit there was a mix of caravans and family tents- and my tiny wee tent. (Solo campers like myself are seemingly quite common, so the warden told me). The warden said they don't allow large/rowdy groups as it's a 'quiet family site' which was fine with me! There were no children's' 'play' facilities, but most families I saw were making their own fun, playing football etc. With loads of room to tear about in. It's a great location for outdoorsy families or serious walkers (near Schiehallion for one). The toilet blocks are clean but unlit (bring a torch for night), and there's only cold water and no showers, but you can have a full wash in a cubicle which locks - it's really fine! It's a lovely quiet spot where you can fall asleep listening to the wind swishing in the pine trees. No fires are allowed as it's in the middle of the forestry, but there are handy benches with metal 'trays' at one end for stoves and BBQs and I noticed a few people with 'fire baskets'. DO bring midgie repellent though - there are 'midge eaters' on site, but honestly, there were hoards of the wee brutes everywhere, especially at the edges of the site under the trees and they drove me demented in the evening and morning. Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here and plan to visit again.

This is a lovely area of Scotland with difficult access roads that make it a bit remote and usually very peaceful. We visited for the first time on a very hot weekend 75-80 Degrees of heat and the forest walks are sublime. The leaves of the many aspen trees on the site abound and shimmer in a spell binding way in a slight breeze. Many other reviewers have mentioned the facilities - or mainly the lack of them but the two basic necessities are well catered for. There are plentiful supplies of fresh water taps and a clean and easy to use chemical toilet disposal. These are the only two requirements that we have of a site and the price - now £8 for all seasons and all camping rigs - though backpackers are cheaper yet.

Highly recommended the wardens care for their forest AND their customers is exemplary. We will be back and thanks to the pleasant welcome and peaceful stay.

This is a basic campsite, almost wild camping. That's not a criticism because it's what we wanted and exactly as advertised. The site is essentially a level, well kept field with a 'forestry road' type of track for vehicles.

Just pitch up (no booking) and the warden will come round in the evening and take payment in cash.

The toilet block is basic but functional and very clean. There are no showers or hot water. The block had been upgraded since our last visit to include cubicles where you can have what I would call a 'proper wash' behind the privacy of a locked door. It may sound a bit spartan but it really is fine. Again, I have to say that it is advertised accordingly.

The village of Kinloch Rannoch is only 3 miles (ish)away and has a shop and off licence where you can get most of the essentials. Thgere are a couple of hotels where you can have a meal. There is no filling station - there used to be but it's closed. The nearest fuel is the town of Pitlochry which is about 16 miles away.

The surrounding area is great for walking. The local mountain called Schihallion is a great day out and there are also many more sedate walks marked out by the camp site.

I like this place and return annually. I suspect because it is so basic that it does not attract the party animal, so I am confident that I can completely relax in an place shared by like minded people. I am not against the louder, party type environment but this place is not one of them.

If this is your cup of tea then I highly recommend it.

We spent 2 nights on the site in glorious, if extremely cold weather. As it says in the description this is a no frills site, however as such it excels. The toilet and washing area was always spotless and supplied with toilet paper and paper towels.

The site covers a large area and is broken up with small clumps of trees/bushes which serve to give a degree of privacy. There are picnic tables dotted about the site and these have a metal plate attached to allow disposable BBQs to be used, a very nice touch.

The warden was very diligent and always had time for a chat and willing to take time to give information when asked.

There are many lovely walks which can be accessed from the site, these vary from quite short to long.

We were only in the local shop once but it appears to be well stocked.

I can imagine the site would suffer badly from midges during the summer months, however we did not encounter any on our stay. We are already planning another visit to the site for next year.

The park is lovely and big, warden very friendly, and facilities good. The scenery to the park is very beautiful which is helpful if you are a passenger as the road is very windy which made the 25mile(ish) when you leave the A9 over an hour to get there. With some hairpin bends so you need to take your time.

Visited for 2 nights with our caravan and friends had their tent, was able to pitch together which was really handy.

There is no park for the kids but we knew that but they were not bored and there was plenty of things for them to explore, if we went back we would take the bikes though.

Definitely suggest taking some mosquito repellent and those nets for your head, as they are every where so can dampen you experience.

Take a BBQ to keep the midges away

Be aware there are no lights on the site or toilet block and its cold water however for £6 a night its fantastic value.

Just returned from our first visit to the campsite, could only manage one night away and it was great. Plenty of room, three families with six man tents and three cars. The site was clean and tidy, toilets and wash areas very clean although a shower or two would be good idea, and not to noisy at night. One of the children had a wee accident which required a visit to the Medical centre in Pitlochry, the warden was very helpful indeed with directions. The kids had a ball swimming in the river sliding down the rocks into the water! Pity it was only for the one night, will definitely be returning to this campsite again. Like wild camping but having the luxury of toilets and washing areas. Scenery amazing. Although no play equipment for the children. Its good for them to use their imagination sometimes and they did! Thank you and hoping for good weather next weekend!

Beautiful, peaceful, large site. You choose your own pitch either in the open or in amongst the woods. Only one block of toilets so depending where you pitch you may have a walk around the site a few times a day to use them but there are plenty pitches close to them. They don't have any electricity and only cold water but are clean and always plenty toilet roll.

Lovely walks around the site and a lovely atmosphere. I'll definitely be returning here.

It is a wonderful campsite. Facilities are simple (wooden huts with loos and wash basins) but clean. The site is large but broken up by trees.

We walked in the woods and spent ages watching wood ants building their nests. We swam in a pool in the river that runs down the side of the site. We didn't explore much further afield but will be back.

Midges were just coming out (the winter has been cold). Be prepared for midges and ticks - this is their ideal habitat.

The nights we were there the site had a lovely atmosphere probably caused by a combination of lack of electricity and a no fires rule. I guess this rules out two types of campers but rules in the many who want a quiet time.

Why can't more site be like this?

Returned from an 8 night holiday on this site. This site was busy but still plenty of space. Lots of families at the time we were there but all quite by 10pm (must have been on one of the forest walks). Could not asked for a better week, even the midges did not bother us.

One of the cleanest sites we have ever been on. Warden very helpful and knowledgeable of the wild life and area. The local shop 5 - 10 minutes drive - very adequate. We enjoyed listening and watching wild life - especially the woodpecker. The forest walks were very good and even my disabled husband was able to manage 2 of them.

The only criticism we have is the track to the site from the road has a lot of potholes.

All in all it is a very good site and at £6 per night excellent value for money so we will be returning as we found this site very relaxing.

First camping trip of the year. Little bit of snow on the ground. Lovely and quiet, only 2 other caravans on site. Forgot the tent pegs but the ground was soft enough to use sticks instead!

Warden came and collected money the next morning, very friendly. Toilet block clean and with loo roll. Only cold water but we knew that.

Lovely waymarked walks around forestry. Gorgeous meal, very good value (afternoon menu) at Dunalistair Hotel in Kinloch Rannoch. Be warned there is no view of the Loch from the campsite, which for me was the only downside to a lovely place.
