We spent the weekend here after spectacularly failing to find any space on sites where campfires are permitted, or even our second prize choices where they are not. In fact we were recommended the site on the basis that 'it never gets full' by the farm site on the banks of Loch Tummel down the road that features in the Cool Camping Guide.
All in all we were more than happy to get this advice though, as this is a more than pleasant little site in a beautifully remote location. After driving past a number of crammed sites in the height of the school holidays, this place was a welcome relief.
There are no defined pitches as such, but a few little secluded areas for private camping if you look hard enough and take the first left turning away from the main field where most people camp. Make sure you take a torch though if you get caught short in the night for an action trip to the toilets, and then likewise to locate the pan in the pitch black. Better that than a French style pot shot into oblivion.
The other top tip would be to take a BBQ along which turns out to be pretty vital to keep the midges away and which, if you keep it going for the evening, is the only way of coming close to having a fire here.
There are no real downsides. It was surprisingly freezing and damp at night depsite overcast conditions, and the midges are a pain, but there were enough positives to make up for that. Take a wander down to the loch side for a fantastic sunset (there were some people wild camping on the beach here too) or the more strenuous walk up Schiehallion is only about a 15 min drive away. There is a local store in Kinloch Ranoch that sells some local farm produce as well as more than enough to keep you going for a few days.
As some other reviews have alluded to, there are no facilities here other than the toilets and the washing up sink has running cold water only. But at £12 for 2 nights for 3 of us (in one tent) this still represents great value for money.

Had our second visit here so peaceful lots of lovely walks The site does not have electricity but is so clean the wardens come round in the morning and the evenings to collect fees and spend time cleaning toilet and shower blocks always have time for a wee chat. Very spacious just turn up and choose your spot plenty of room for tents caravans and motor homes no segregation here. Cant complain at £6 a night for tent. Hoping we will be back before end of camping season depending on the good Scottish summer nice village of Kinloch Rannoch about three miles away adequate shop, nice cafe/gift shop.

We intended to stay at this site for two nights, but loved it so much that we stayed an extra two nights. This is a fantastic site, so good that I'm a bit reluctant to let others know of it's existence. The main reason being that there's lots of open space with plenty of room to pitch in either the main field area or several other secluded areas just of this field.
It is so tranquil and peaceful with lots of well-marked walks in the surrounding woodland and beyond. Great for dog-walking! The whole site is very flat, well kept and immaculately clean and tidy. There's no children's play area, but lots of children having a great time playing naturally and safely on their bicycles or down by the small stream.
A torch is essential as there is no electricity on site, and therefore no hot water or showers, but who needs either when the basic facilities of toilet block and outside sinks are immaculately clean.
The wardens are so friendly and welcoming and when doing their rounds in the mornings and late evenings they have plenty of time to chat to everyone and give them information about the area.
No campfires allowed, which is a huge bonus, as we have a dutch canvas tent and loath sites that allow campfires as we live in fear of flying sparks damaging the tent. Campfires also make such a mess of sites.
The nearest village, Kinloch Rannoch, is about three miles away and has a small well-stocked shop for basic essentials. There are also several good pubs with beer gardens.
We were very lucky with the weather, fantastically hot for the time of year and no midge problem in the evenings.
To sum up, this is a real gem of a site in a beautiful scenic area and which we highly recommend if, like us, you love peace and tranquillity with lots of open space and great walks on your doorstep. Camping as it should be! We just hope that they don't ever introduce electricity as that will change everything.

We live in Edinburgh and have visited this site on many occasions. It's very basic (toilet block only) and its the perfect place to relax away from the city. Its accessed from a forestry track and is easy to miss if your not careful. Plenty of space, good walks and really peaceful. Only minor downside is your not allowed a fire (we got a row from the warden last time!). Provisions are available at a shop a couple of miles away

Sadly when visiting this site we could not make the most of what it offers due to the dreadful weather (rain, rain and more rain) we are having this summer, and due to the horrendous volumes of midgies. However, when the sun shone, and the breeze picked up enough to get rid of the midgies it really was the most tranquil spot.
The site rules are that you turn up and select your pitch and the warden will call in the evening to collect payment. There are lots of secluded pitches amongst the trees or good open spots too. The facilities are immaculately kept, but do not offer electricity, hot water or showers, so be prepared. There are plenty of stand pipes dotted around for drinking water and a good washing up area and clean toilets.
There is a gushing river running on the side of the site and we found a beautiful bridge to cross that takes you from the site into the forest for great, well marked walks.
There is no shop, (it is a very remote site) but just a mile or so down the road, on the side of the beautiful loch Ranoch is a tiny village with a store that is able to supply most of your forgotten/ runout essentials.
Out of midge season this would be just a beautiful, quiet, tranquil place to stay. The birdlife is abundant and we are sure we saw an eagle!

We loved this site. No facilities except for toilets, which were scary at night due to lack of electricity but that was part of the fun. Plenty of room- choose your spot, warden came a.m. And p.m. Dogs loved it. Loads of walks. No children's play area- even better! Peaceful and quiet. I expect it gets busier in the summer. Highly recommend this site for reducing stress levels unless you are addicted to television!

Been to this site on countless occasions, great situation, and plenty of room to have your own "private gathering" should you choose. Facilities are basic, but the situation makes it well worth while. Warden is always helpful

We stayed here for one night and cycled round the loch. It's a basic grass site, just a big field within Tay forest park with a wooden toilet block. That's it. There is no electric hook ups, showers or shop and it gets very dark at night so take a torch. There are some picnic tables dotted around the site with steel plates on for BBQs The hotel in Kinloch Rannoch had a wedding reception on so we couldn't try it but there is another one at Craignour Lodge (2 pints of cider and nuts = £7.95 needless to say we only had one) We loved this site, very peaceful, but it's not for everybody. PS. The road round the loch is great for cycling quite a flat 24miles and hardly any traffic.

None! This isnt so much a review - more an update on information regarding the camp location. I have cycled around Loch Rannoch before and didnt remember spotting a campsite in the village of Loch RAnnoch itself as displayed on the map link - after emailing the camp owner thye confirmed the following:
"The campsite is actually 2 miles along the south shore road of Kinloch Rannoch near a small hamlet called Carie.
There are indeed toilets but as it is a basic site there is no electricity and therefore no hot water.
I hope you enjoy your stay and remember to take some anti midge stuff."
They also confirmed a family tent with two people staying would cost £6.
Hope this helps - worth considering staying here for a one nighter as the cycle round Loch Rannoch is well worth putting up with a basic campsite for one night.
