A typical racecourse site, they won't spend any money on it but the Caravan Club manage it for them.

Previous negative comments are very unfair as the site managers and the club can't do anything about the dated facilities but come on, painted plywood toilet cubicles instead of plastic coated wallboards is no reason to down-mark this site.

The grass is kept beautifully short and one of the flattest fields I've stayed on. Although old the toilets are spotless,

Site managers (wardens) very friendly and the site is right next to a Tesco and a Lidl and a very short walk into town although there is not much to the town really.

For £14 per night and so convenient for a stopover travelling north to south or vice versa this is a cracking site.

This was our first ever stay at a racecourse site and was booked since it was near to the venue for a wedding we were attending.

Having read the reviews, we were not expecting the regular Caravan Club facilities, but for what we required, we couldn't fault it and at £14 a night, it was good value. Location was ideal, handy for supermarkets (Lidl and Tesco), or Thirsk itself for both high street names and independent shops. Since it is part of the racecourse complex, the pitches are laid out in rows rather than the imaginative landscaping of Club sites, but we did not feel cramped despite one of the nights being full. The pitch we chose was closely mown and flat - hardly any levelling required and my OH is particular about that.

Likewise, the facilities block was not what we have become used to, but quite functional and spotlessly clean. Showers are the electric type. The husband and wife warden team were very friendly and helpful. Special thanks to the warden who juggled bookings in order for us to extend our booking to include the Saturday.

No wifi, unfortunately, which we like to find out about places to visit or eat.

The wedding was held at Crab Manor, Asenby, with the reception at The Crab and Lobster pub which is alongside and part of the same complex. The decor is made up of an eclectic mix of ephemera which adorns wall space and the ceiling, and is very quirky.

Can't comment on the regular menu but the wedding was enjoyable.

Nearby, at Topcliffe, is The Angel where we ate the night before and our party enjoyed their 'pub' meals. Kilburn, home of the late woodcarver famous for incorporating a mouse into his work, made an interesting and pleasant excursion.

There is a showroom, gift shop, museum (charged admission), cafe and garden. Nice light lunch but resisted buying a 'mouseman' cheeseboard at more than £80!

We visited this site a couple of times in 2014. We love Thirsk, its a typical Yorkshire Market Town. The site is situated at the entrance to the town and just a short walk into the centre.

There is a Tesco and Lidl supermarket next to the site which is very handy as we have a motorhome. The down side to the site is it is very dated and not any way near the Club standard.

It is only on 10 amps electric and the facilities are clean but really dated, however, I must say its not the fault of the club as they don't own it but I really think the racecourse could do better as they must make a good return from the revenue from caravans and motorhomes.

Just returned for three days on Thirsk Racecourse site. We actually saw sunshine for a full day. We love Thirsk as its a lovely typical Yorkshire Market Town.

The site is situated at the entrance to town and just a short two minute walk into the centre. You have a Tesco and Lidl supermarket next to the site for all your provisions. We have just swapped from a caravan to a motorhome so its handy for any shopping.

The down side to the site is it is very dated and not any way near the CC standard. It is only on 10 amps electric and the facilities are really dated.

Its not the fault of the club as they don't own it but I really think the racecourse could get their fingers out and do better as they must make some canny revenue from the caravanners as its popular.

We arrived to a very friendly welcome from the wardens who advised us of the procedure for pitching as we have not stayed at this site before. It was 4. 30pm on a Friday and the site was pretty full.

We 'walked the site first', and noticed the ground was a little bumpy in places so, avoided these pitches. However, we managed to find a pitch that enabled us to bask in the unseasonal summery weather on this first weekend of opening for the 2012 season.

The photograph used by the CC is deceptive, as pointed out by other reviewers. Only 3/4 pitches actually face directly onto the racecourse and, being an all grass surface, it gave the impression of being in a field, which was no great problem. Apart from when it rains, I guess. We did not experience the wet stuff, thankfully.

Although there seems to be an adequate number of EHU bollards we were glad we had brought the extra cable as the usual one (standard size) just did not reach - and yes, we were parked with the back of the MH centred up with the pitch marker post.

Toilets etc adequate but I would think may be pushed when the site is chocca. Dated, but very clean, as per usual CC standards. 3 toilets & 2 showers in the Ladies and I am told it is similar in the Gent's.

MH emptying facilities were used. Easy to access up at the top end of the site, near the reception area, which is also where the bins, water & chemical disposal point could also be found.

There is an easy walk to Thirsk town centre out of the site, turn left, through a ginnel and across a large expanse of grass (info' boards explained the history of the site), through another ginnel and arrived on the high street - 5 mins away.

If a pork pie lover you could have joined queues at any of the 3 butchers / pork pie shops. A testimony to the popularity of this Yorkshire favourite.

It was Market day (held twice a week on Monday's & Saturday's). Today was Saturday market and as markets go, it was a pitiful sight. Just a few fruit/ veg stalls, the usual 2nd hand books, tat and cut price clothes. OK if this is your scene.

The Museum was closed and was not due to open until the following Monday - a disappointment but, it is the start of the season, I suppose. We made a bee-line into the Wetherspoons pub (The Three Tuns) - it was 12. 15 and it was already heaving. The busiest place in town, I suspect. It is in a grade II listed building which sits on Thirsk's cobbled market place.

Not much else to see in the town although we did go for a walk down by the river, with dog in tow, up along past St Mary's beautiful, magnificently crafted Gothic church, complete with gargoyles and eventually it brought us past a cemetery and to a T in the road; we turned left and it brought us out by Lidl. Pleasant and nothing strenuous.

The Tesco across the road from the site was very handy for supplies or, alternatively Lidl for those items that you never see in UK supermarkets.

We would go back again.

To find site:- Leave A1(M) onto A61 in direction of Thirsk. On entering town the Racecourse is on the left and keep an eye out for camping signs. Entrance is well marked with Caravan Club signs on left about 100 metres before Lidl store.

This site is well situated on the edge of the Market Town of Thirsk and is in one corner of the Racecourse. The site is open from the end of March to the end of September and non-members and tent campers are accepted. There are 60 pitches all of which are in grass. The surface of the ground is a bit up and down so some side to side levelling maybe required. Whilst individual pitch size is quite generous the site can seem crowded because the pitches are in long rows. As with many racecourse sites the Club do not own them or the facilities so toilets blocks whilst perfectly clean and functional can seem somewhat old fashioned and are not to the same standard as usually found on mainstream Club sites. Water and toilet waste disposal is situated in one corner of the site so some distance from many pitches. There are a few water points dotted around the site. Electricity connections are only rated at 10 amps. All units have to be moved to a different section of the racecourse during race meetings and that area has no toilets or electricity. Check with Club for dates of meetings. The site does have a late arrivals area immediately inside the gates. Reception has limited opening hours so watch out for instruction posted near to Reception. Usually, if you have booked, you find a pitch and return later to pay.

The delightful town of Thirsk is only a short walk from the site. It is of course famous for its connection with the ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ James Herriot books and there is a Museum in the town. There are plenty of places to eat in the town. Next door and opposite are a Lidl and Tesco supermarket.

What a disapointment this site was, its nothing like the picture in the caravan club handbook, in fact our view was the site of a lidll supermarket which received a noisy delivery at 3am! which lasted for 45 mins.

The site has 2 busy roads running along each side with a fire and ambulance station on.

The dog walk as described in the handbook was a rough unfenced piece of grass and tarmac and was not suitable.

The wardens were very unhelpful and couldn't tell us were to walk the dogs, but one very nice local lady pointed us in the direction of another part of the race course (coach parking area) which was a nice grassed enclosed area with fanastic views and safe for the dogs.

The toilets and showers were very dated although they were clean. All in all it was a great disappointment.

Site not like usual Caravan Club sites stayed on before, staff very friendly. NO barrier at site entrance, site office water disposal showers & toilets situated after camping area. By the time we had arrived at 3pm the only pitches available were near to the entrance. I did not feel this was good from a security point of view. Ground not level in places and had humps so when it rained we had mini lakes! Noise at 4. 45 a. M. From a delivery at the adjacent Lidl supermarket took over an hour and was not needed when coming away for a quiet weekend. By the time the delivery had stopped, we were all wide awake and not feeling too happy. Site is convenient for Thirsk town (10 mins walk), Tesco across the road is open until midnight and caused no disturbances.

We have stayed at this site before and chose it again due to its location; it being only 5 minutes walk from the pleasant town centre where there are lots of eateries from a charming bistro to a fairly new Weatherspoons.

Shopping is made easy as there's a large Tesco just minutes away on foot. Yes, the toilet block is not the ususal standard that we've come to expect from a Caravan Club site and it could do with a refurb but it's kept clean by the friendly wardens.

We had a full awning for the trip and had plenty of room around our pitch without feeling cramped.

The site is also well positioned for a ride out to the surrounding Yorkshire towns and villages e. g. a visit to the steam rally at Helmsley or a shopping trip on market day to picturesque Pickering.

Usual Caravan Club Site, well run, clean & ordered.

Mostly flat c/w EHU although there are a number of pitches which need careful levelling. There is no character just rows it felt a little 'cold'

Toilet facilities we found to be clean a little dated but functional.

The town of Thirsk is quaint & provides eating places to suit all pockets, including a near to site excellent Fish & Chips shop.

As stated in previous reviews a very large supermarket is within sight with petrol availability.

Would stop there again but not as a base for exploring but rather a stop over.
