We've used this site before but not for several years. The facilities are kept very clean and were certainly up to usual club standards. There is a handy shop and pub near at hand.
However, we found one warden surly and unpleasant - having had a long drive a smile would not have gone amiss.
The site has now also got a gate which must be opened and closed each time you exit or arrive - we would have no objection if this were a 'swipe' or 'number pad' system. But it's a manual gate - off a very narrow Devon road, so you have stop, get out, drive through and close - it may not sound much but it is infuriating! Especially as I doubt there is any real reason behind it - the site is very secluded and unlikely to attract any passer bys.
We find the Caravan Club system of picking your own pitch far preferable.

Stayed for 4 days on this excellent site. A little cramped in places but extremely clean and tidy. We found the wardens very friendly and helpful.
The toilets and showers were very clean and had no queues to deal with.
No dog walk on site but walks available in lane opposite and seemed to be used by all doggie people. Spar shop was good supplemented by a fruit and veg seller outside. Thought the near by pub very expensive so gave it a miss.
The setting for the site is quite rural and agree the opening and closing of the gate is a pain, Also no parking places if you come back late at night. Lots of places to see in the area.
Happy to say I recommend it to members

The site was great and the site managers were excellent 'hosts' & very helpful, we had a great day with them during the 'wedding'. Contrary to other comments we were at the bottom of the site which had the sun all day.
It was also very handy for water & waste etc. The toilet blocks were immaculate.
The Spar shop had everything needed if you ran out & supermarkets were not far away.
The calfornia inn was overpriced, the food average & had the most miserable landlord its ever been my misfortune to meet. All Beer at £3.50 per pint was a bit greedy. The table we had booked for a meal was occupied & we had to wait. All in all OK for a beer but average food that was overpriced.

I spent 3 nights here in the middle of October, on a gravel-based hard-standing pitch with EHU and enough grass next to it to put up my utility tent. Only the lower part of the site was in use this late in the season, with a few caravans and motorhomes plus my 'van. There was a drive-over service point with fresh/waste water, recycling and rubbish bins. The rest of the site was grass, with some EHU.
There was a small reception/shop manned by the very friendly wardens and a large toilet/shower/washing-up/laundry block. The toilet/shower facilities were basic but did the job.
The petrol station nearby is also apparently a well-stocked shop and there is a pub nearby (I did not visit these). The site lies about a third of the way from the A38 to Kingsbridge, but beware with your navigation because it is easy to end up on sub-B-class roads with passing places (thank goodness I have a campervan). Even the A-class roads were pretty narrow in places.
I visited Torbay (very busy, and watch out for car parks with height barriers on the exit lane only!), Salcombe and Torcross/Slapton Ley along the coast, before heading briefly onto Dartmoor (also busy, and again I was glad to have a small 'van with some of the roads/bridges I ended up on).
A nice site to get away from it all, and be prepared for some driving.

Just got back from 2 weeks at this site, it's within easy reach of the A38 with the last 4 miles in winding country lanes, the entry to site needs to be navigated with care but we managed this without incident, a couple of other campers caught their vans on the gatepost on the way in so definitely worth taking care. (Though it's nothing like as tight as some places we've taken our van!)
The staff were very welcoming & were friendly & helpful throughout our stay, we were given a choice of pitches, choosing one next to the play area as we have 2 kids that would enjoy the proximity even if secretly their parents would rather be a little further away! The pitch was large & grassy, we were on a slope so needed chocks on one side & blocks under the rear steadies, the site has a large supply of blocks for campers that do not have their own.
As other reviewers have mentioned the site has clean & plentiful showers & loos, the on site launderette is reasonable & wasn't too busy even though the site was pretty full. There are external washing lines, an indoor airer & an iron. There is a well stocked shop at the top of the lane which is less than a minute away, there is also a stall next to the garage where a local smallholder sells lovely fresh veg & eggs. We didn't use the pub opposite based on previous reviews. We were given a leaflet on arrival with instructions on how to get to all of the local grocery stores, all are 8-10 miles away.
The site staff kindly offered us some vouchers for local attractions (Pennywell Farm & Woodlands Park) we took them up on their offer & had great days out at both of them, especially at Pennywell where I made friends with a ferret! We also enjoyed days out at Bigbury beach, Kingsbridge, Salcombe, Dartmouth, Torbay & some nice walks on Dartmoor, the local radio station Dart FM & the local paper provided plenty of ideas for local events.
Unlike other C&CC sites this site doesn't have a dog walk & they ask you to address your dogs toilet needs offsite, they suggest using the lane opposite the site as it is quiet & pleasant, I walked it most days with our 2 dogs & rarely saw a car, we met a local one morning & asked for advice on other local dog walks - they recommended Blackdown Rings which is a couple of miles away on the way to Loddiswell, this is an ancient hill fort with free parking & plenty of free space for the dogs to run off the lead. On days when we couldn't take the dogs out with us we used the nearby kennels at Blackdown Farm which were reasonably priced & very friendly.
Overall we have enjoyed one of our best holidays in the 6 years we've had the van, the only suggestions we would make would be a curfew on the play area as some evenings teenage children were there until 10:30 & providing a bit more information on local dog walks in the arrival info.
PS neither O2 or Virgin received usable mobile signal on site - perfect!

This site would have been very nice if we'd had a decent pitch - not chucked down the bottom right next to the service point. The stones looked grubby and we had no grass next to our pitch. Also, the warden had put a bit of wire in a loop so he could lift the drain lid - not very clever if someone walked round there in the dark. Booked two nights - did a bunk after one. On the plus side the toilets and showers were very clean.

Quiet, clean site, the toilets and showers were very good and free.
Right next to the site is a spar/garage and across the road a pub.
Well located in beautiful countryside with a short drive to many lovely beaches.
Kingsbridge is not far away a good place for fish and chips etc.
Will be returning soon!

Can't fault this site one bit!
Being 'new' campers (this was our first proper trip since our maiden voyage in May) we were careful to utilise reviews in order to pick a site - i.E not too big, not too small.
This site was lovely and one we shall certainly return to. Welcomed by a lovely lady who showed us to our pitch and answered our queries, the facilities were well maintained, very clean as was the site.
There is a Spar around the corner, part of the garage, a little expensive but convenient - we never ventured to the pub due to the below review! Although our neighbouring campers also warned us of this - their experience was overpriced yet poor quality food!
The children loved to have some independence and as we were pitched fairly close to the play park they were always in view - so this worked well for both!
We were lucky that we stayed when we had what felt like our few days of summer and had lovely weather, and due to its central location it's ideal for trips. We were fortunate to spend days on the beach at Bigbury and Thurlestone.
Definitely return to this site, the other great bonus is that it feels quite small and private, another benefit.

A little gem of a site which I am tempted to keep to myself. There is a lot of bird life on the site and it was a pleasure to wake up to the dawn chorus.
Alot of the pitches are on a slope but more than a few are nice and level. I have a 5 year old daughter and did find the play area small but the management do not mind the kids riding bikes around the site road. It is all one way and a 5 mph speed limit so is pretty safe.
The toilet block is cleaned to a high standard and the showers are nice and hot. There is even a parent and toddler room.
If you have children don't even bother taking them to the California Cross Inn for a meal. As soon as we walked in we were asked to move to a little charmless back area as the landlord doesn't like children in the larger bar.
The childrens menu was the normal kids junk-food and it is the first pub I have ever come across that will not do smaller portions of its main menu for children. The reason being that they pre-portion it and cannot rework the price!
My wife had the pie of the day. It was allegedly steak and stilton but tasted horrible. They do little puff pastry pie crusts that are introduced to the rest of the pie when it is dished up. If you are a pie lover avoid this like the plague.
On the plus side if you are going over for just a pint then enjoy, as the beer is well kept.
I will certainly be visting the site again but will avoid the pub, because if you cater for children you should welcome them and the California Inn did not.
