Weather forecast was good so we decided last minute to get the tent out and headed up to Hardraw. We arrived at approx 11. 45am and were told to pitch anywhere. The choice was either field one which was closer to the toilet block or field two which was closer to the waterfall. Field one was already quite cramped when we arrived so we decided on field two which at the time only had about 6 or 7 tents pitched, later on in the day it got really busy and the spaces between pitches was none existent, people were double parked in the car park as well(not a bank holiday or schools hols either).

The grass was quite long and full of large thick stinging thistle type weeds which were a right pain to be honest. I found it necessary to clear an area by chopping the thistles with a pair of scissors before pitching, (how stupid did I look!). There was also lots of broken bits of black crockery scattered all over the place. I thought they'd been having a Greek night before we arrived there was that much of it, until it was pointed out to me that it wasn't crockery but clay pigeons, so again I had to do a clear up job on our little patch. I think the least they could do is cut the grass/weeds and get rid of any debris left lying around to make it that little bit easier for those using the camping fields.

We did get some sun in field two but because of the high trees around and the fact that it's kind of in a little valley it didn't last all day, so if you want sunshine you'd better opt for field one which also has better views of the surrounding area.

Toilets were OK, just 2 cubicles in the ladies with runing hot and cold water and a hand dryer but no mirror. They did run out of loo paper by the time it got to 7pm and when I went first thing the following morning at 7. 30 it still hadn't been replenished, so best to take your own. There were 2 showers which were free and were very nice, plenty of hot water but no mirrors. The gents had only 1 shower. There were no pot washing facilities at all which for the amount they charge is a bit poor. I did read somewhere that there are two belfast sinks provided for washing up but these were lying on the ground next to the visitors centre and weren't even plumbed in.

Food in the pub was mediocre, nothing fancy and not a great deal to choose from but it was edible and the portions were a good size. We didn't see the owner around at all but the staff were really nice and friendly. The pub is quite quirky, some may find it a little dingy but I thought the lack of lighting added to it's character. The ladies toilet in the pub was disgusting! Tiny, dirty, and smelly. Makes you wonder what the kitchen is like?? Myself and quite a few other pub customers chose to use the toilets on the campsite insted which is probably why they ran out of loo paper so quickly.

The walk to Hawes was nice and flat, it took around 25 mins leisurely stroll and it was worth it, Hawes is a lovely little place with lots of pubs and eating places, convenience stores and a chip shop.

When you book in at the Green Dragon they ask for a £10 deposit - it states on their website that this is 'returnable upon checkout if all is well' and all was well when we left - weed and clay pigeon free thankyou very much!

I really like the location of this campsite, being in a limestone gorge with the spectacular Hardraw Force waterfall at its head. And just a 30-40 min walk to Hawes etc.

It has a new toilet block (albeit with only 1 shower in the mens and 1 in the womans) and will hopefully have somewhere to wash pots when the block's finished.

The site is basically in the back garden of the Green Dragon pub, which does good standard pub grub and nice real ales. And not having a road running through it, it's safe to let kids play.

On the down side are the midges! The site is sheltered, so low winds, has a river running along one side of it, and they don't cut the long wet grass on much of the site. All this meant that we were eaten alive by midges on the warm damp June weekend we were there. And the wet grass meant wet trainers when you walked to the tent.

They could reduce the midge problem by keeping the campsite grass cut short (if the owners should read these reviews - take note). Beware of visiting in the midge season until they do that!

Just returned from 3 nights at the green dragon.

You can't book but we did call the night before to check if there was likely to be space. Staff said that apart from music festival times it is rare that they don't have pitches free.

We loved the site. New toilet/shower block is great, lots of free hot water for showers. Word of warning - the lights are on a timer that is activated by opening the door so you may have to finish off your shower in the dark if you are slow!

By the time we left the site was pretty full but still did not queue for facilities - toilet roll did run out though!

Kids loved playing in the stream and spotting rabbits in the graveyard.

We ate in the pub a couple of times and went for a drink every night. It is a brilliant old pub, very friendly and don't forget to book breakfast the night before if you want to try the full english (although no booking required for bacon butty and cuppa)

My only slight niggles were that there is no pot washing facilities and there are no hairdryers or plugs to use your own. A decent mirror in the ladies would also be welcome and a mirror suitable for shaving in the gents?!

Having said this I know that this is not their main business and all in all it is a great place. We'll be back.

I camped here for a little May Day music festival and it was amazing. Not just the festival itself, but the campsite is a gem. It's divided into 2, the first field mainly camper vans (I don't know if that was specially for the festival) and the second a completely protected tent-only valley, sun-drenched from half 9 until dusk, 100 yards from Hardraw Force (free access), next to a babbling stream.

When I was there it was blowing gales at the entrance but you just couldn't tell from the campsite, protected by a hill covered in bluebells, pinks and primroses.

The staff were charming, and enthusiastic and the pub had yummy real ales, cozy fires late at night, and instant camaraderie with young and old, walkers and bikers. And only a mile's walk to Hawes on the Pennine Way. Just lovely.

Oh facilities - loos and shower as well as the aforementioned pub. Hot shower with lots of pressure. There's a tap in the campsite, with extra portable loos, and several picnic tables. I didn't see the bunkhouse, so I don't know if they had special pot-washing and cooking places.

We found this campsite on the internet and thought we would give it a bash to try out our new tent, we were pleasantly greeted on arrival. We set up tent ( finally got it up after about2 hours of trying ) this place was packed, everyone was friendly and the pub was full on the night with a live band, it was an excellent friendly atmosphere.

We have just bought a new friendlier tent so cant wait to go here again!

Car park on site, however you have to leave it in the carpark and can't take it up to the tent, and its only 15 min walk through field to town centre and other amenities

Amazing place! Just had 2 nights here with my wife and 7 year old son. Absolutely loved it. Choice of 2 fields, tents only, right on the banks of the beck. Your car has to stay in the car parking area, so we just pitched close to there (lazy!) We stayed away from the pathway as walkers pass through on the way to the waterfall, which is stunning! Highest in England. The whole area is privately owned and maintained, (including waterfall and pathways, etc,) so look after it folks!

We made friends with some young robins who we hand fed and a hedgehog who also wanted to share our supper.

Brand spanking new toilet block is spot on. Small, but we never queued, clean and stacks of hot water. The owners are also developing a heritage centre here too. They really are putting some effort in.

The landlady, although clearly very busy, was willing to help me out with the loan of some jump-leads when I ran my car battery down leaving the fridge on in the boot (oops!)

They also own The Green Dragon pub on site, their main business. One step through the front door is like stepping back 100 years! What a fascinating inn. A maze of five rooms, 4 with some sort of range or open fire (the one in the bar is permanently lit,) all with ancient oak beams, low lighting, period features and bric-a-brac, interesting pictures on the walls and not forgetting the old grey cat asleep on the bar. Furnished all in old dark wood with some lovely old settles and tables and chairs from a time long gone. This is how pubs used to be. Still should be in my opinion.

Choice of five real ales on tap, had to try them all, naturally! Not the cheapest bar in the world but, to me, worth every penny.

Food available all day, including breakfast if booked the day before. We cooked for ourselves, we'll have to sample the meals next time we go.

So YES! we will definitely return.

If you're there on a Thursday teatime, check out the working sheepdog display in the field on the way back down to Hawes. 10 min stroll from the campsite or 2 mins in the car. Quite interesting.

We arrived on Saturday afternoon with a friend and dog! When you arrive you need to pay in the pub before pitching and you have to pay a £10 deposit which you get back when you depart. Unfortunately for us maths was not the strongest point for the person serving us and I had to tell her how much it should cost!

There is a small car park before the first field and you have to carry all your belongings to the pitch - be warned if you want to pitch in the second field! It would better if you could drive to the pitch unload and then park your car away from the pitches.

The campsite itself is very nice although following rain it was muddy! You also need to be aware when you are paying to pitch that if you want breakfast you need to order it then and the staff should ask but in our case they didn't so come Sunday morning when we wanted breakfast service was very lousy.

Also there is nowhere to wash your pots so its a visit to either the ladies or gents toilets - our pots went home and into the dishwasher! A visit to the waterfall is a must -we just walked from the tent with the dog - not sure whether we should have paid or not!

Would we come again - yes we would as for us there are more positives than negatives

I've just come back from a fab weekend at Green Dragon Campsite. Despite the negative reviews we decided to try the site out. The fact it belonged to a pub and had a live band on Saturday night had something to do with it!

The new toilet / shower block is now open and immaculate inside. The site is in a great location, whilst the 2 fields are small we managed to find a great little spot next to the stream which leads to the waterfalls.

Visitors to the falls do walk through the campsite on a footpath to the side of the field, we camped on the opposite side so didn't find it a problem.

We went to the pub in the evening and had an absolutely fab time. The live band on were brilliant, got everyone up dancing and it absolutely rocked. A fantastic atmosphere. The landlord looked like he was enjoying himself too.

We met some great people including a group of bikers who made our weekend. We thought we knew how to party! Will definitely return. Dont get me wrong, the partying wasn't going on in the field, just inside the pub. The field itself seemed to be really quiet.

The only downside is you cant park next to the tent (but parking wasn't far away and we soon got over it).

 Good points:-

1. Stunning scenery.

2. The waterfall 'Hardraw Force' is part of the site, and is fantastic. It's just far enough away so you can't hear it through the night.

3. It's cheap. £5.00 per adult/ per night.

Bad points:-

1. The toilet/shower. One is not enough to service a site of this size. A new building looked like it was almost finished, but that was no use to us, with 4 kids under 5.

2. No access to site by car. We pitched about 300 yards from the car park, so it took forever to get our gear from the car, in pouring rain.

3. Communication from site owners/employees is poor. Nobody told us, or anyone else on the site, that the toilets in the pub would be open early for campers to use.

In summary, I would probably return, but only if I was guaranteed that the toilet/shower block was open.

This site has massive potential.

We stayed at this camp site over a weekend in August with friends, we arrived on the Friday night and stayed for the weekend. The setting of the camp site was really beautiful: it is set in a dell, with a river, tall trees and a stunning waterfall nearby. The pub was brilliant, with good quality well kept ales and a wonderful atmosphere; however the food was basic pub grub and the ale was in the upper price range.

There was only one toilet and one shower to share between 24 tents, no washing up facilities and we only found the water supply when we were leaving.

There are no signs explaining where the camp site is: you are expected to guess that you have to enter the pub to sign in, then pass through the brown gate saying “private land” which leads to what you assume is the camp site. Neither the parking area or the camping ground is clearly marked and the receipt you are given once you sign in, threatens to withold your deposit if you pitch in the wrong area!

When the facilities have been improved it will make the camp site much better, although I do think that smaller changes could be made quickly to vastly improve the service offered. The setting is impressive and has the potential to be a fantastic site.
