Just returned from two weeks at this site and overall had a good time.
Most of the pitches are very large, but some, like the one we were on although covering a large area, were long and thin.
The shower blocks could be at times in need of a little more detail cleaning, it appeared to depend on the individual cleaner assigned to the block.
The pool was excellent, we always found it to be warm enough for our three children to play in for a few hours at a time. The water slide area could get a little crowded. The swimming pools are unattended, so some of the adults occasionally had to ask the more boisterous teenagers to be careful around the smaller children.
The general area is wonderful for just chilling out, loads of chateux in the area, Saumur market is on a couple days a week, but be early market closes at 1.00pm ish!
The site staff were very helpful, all spoke english and were very polite at our school french, many thanked us for trying.
Loads of Brits and Dutch with a spinkling of older French couples.

I liked this site. The staff all speak good English and were friendly enough.
The pitch we were allocated was easily big enough for a caravan, awning+annex, gazebo, car, with loads of room left over for the barbecue. I noticed the pitches were of varying sizes but they were all large and some were enormous. Several people put badminton/volleyball nets up.
This is a really good site for families and has good facilities for younger and older children. There are several play areas, with sand, and a bouncy castle for younger kids. There were organised activities for children of all ages.
I went with both young and older children and they all had a great time.
I enjoyed fishing on the small lake. Its not brilliant but I caught several small carp (1lb), a rudd and hundreds of poisson chat (small catfish). These are a nuisance for serious anglers but they were easy for youngsters to catch because they take any bait going. There are some larger carp in the pond or so I'm told but they don't appear often. A word of advice about the poisson chat: They have spiky fins which can draw blood if your not careful.
The showers are clean and there was no shortage of hot water.
Bread and croissants from the shop are delicious.
The site is handy for Saumur but there are other places to visit by car or bike. The nearby village of St Martin is worth walking around. Supermarkets are a ten minute drive away in Saumur. Chinon is lovely and 30 minutes away. And I'm told that Tours is worth the 45 minute drive. There are cycle routes along tracks and quiet roads directly from the site. The cycling is level and easy.
One activity I tried was canoeing down the Vienne river from Chinon to Candes St Martin for 16 km. The wind was against us and
It was hard work compared to the Dordogne and not nearly as picturesque.
I recommend this campsite, especially to families and its apparent that many return year after year. I won't be returning but thats so that I can visit similar sites in other areas of France.

We have just returned after 10 nights at this site. We have two young children who enjoyed the facilities, particularly the swimming Pools. Our pitch was large and well shaded, facing the children's play areas.
The toilet and washing facilities were very good and regularly cleaned. We did not have any problem with the showers; finding them quite powerful and hot. Perhaps the recent reviewer who had problems did not notice that the temperature is adjustable by rotating the control?
We had a very good meal in the site Restaurant which we really enjoyed. We also used the site shop which I thought was reasonably priced and stocked most of the essentials. For a bigger choice we used Intermarche about 10 minutes away in Saumur.
During our stay there was mixture of nationalities on site; mainly made up by British, French, Dutch and Irish campers.
Yes there were more Dutch on site than British but I don't get the previous reviewers comments regarding the site being too quiet. You will not find anyone telling you off for making noise at 10.15 pm. Quiet hours are officially from 11:00 pm. But there was some noise a little later than this.
We really enjoyed this site and would recommend it to families in particular, especially with teen-age children.

We have just returned from spending two weeks at this campsite, and returned with mixed feelings.
We arrived eventually, in the fourteen years we have been visiting France this is by far the worst campsite to find. Not very well signposted at all.
The reception when we booked in was very pleasant and spoke really good English. We were shown to our pitch which was very large but on walking round the site wasn't as large as some of them. We were right near to a shower / toilet block, we had no complaints with these, they were cleaned at least twice if not three times a day and unlike the last review the water was always really hot. The dishwashing sinks and clothes washing sinks were also always very clean.
The pool although we didn't use it didn't seem as big as some we have visited and in the brochure it states 4 pools but one is really just a plunge pool.
The shop sold the basic goods but did sell really lovely baguettes etc, if you timed it right they were still really hot. In Saumur which was 10 mins by car away there was a Intermarche and a LeClerc's.
I couldn't agree with the last reviewer and others who have said it was all English there, it was all dutch when we were there. A lot of Irish people also, in fact all nationalities.
We used the restaurant once, which was ok, not esceptional but eatable, saved cooking that night!.
On the whole, not a site we will be returning to, far too quiet, maybe the dutch influence. You were frightened to make a noise and after dark, well, two couples in their fifties that were opposite us were told off one night for making a noise, they were only talking, and it was only 10.15! Another couple got asked to leave the bar as it was closing. It was half past ten. We are not nightclubbers, being in our forties and fifties ourselves but expect a bit more live than this, your'e on holiday enjoy yourself.
Go and try it yourself you might like it but it's not for us.
PS, My husband, the fisherman said the fishing was rubbish too, hardly anything in the ponds to catch except Catfish.

We (2 adults) stayed one night at this campsite. On reflection this was not the kind of site I would chose but I wanted to see it as so many members on here had raved about it. The staff were welcoming and helpful. We had a very large pitch with plenty of shade in a quiet area which was good because that is what we asked for. It had some unfortunate large hollows in it which would have been a problem if it had rained. We do not have EHU although I am sure this was avaliable. There was a water point close to our pitch.
We used the shop which was okay, not as good as some considering this is a big site. We did not use the pools although they looked impressive. I am sure this would be a good site if you had children as there are plenty of facilities. As a previous reviewer said 'lots of British!'
Our biggest complaint about this site was the showers! They were without doubt the worst which we experienced on our trip during June visiting 17 different sites. Considering this is a 4 star campsite which cost us €19 for the night we were really disappointed. The shower was the sort you have to press the button ALL the time. The amount of water was paltry and the temperature was only just warm. I strained my wrist pushing the button and trying to position myself to get a decent shower. I would not have attempted to wash my hair. I think they should spend a bit of money undating the showers. We stayed in some fantastic 1 and 2 star sites with superb shower blocks.
We arrived at the site about 6pm and left the next morning about 10.30. We did not visit any local sites but Samur looked interesting as we drove through.

Stayed here for 3 nights on our way back home. Have to honestly say, we were glad it was only for 3 nights. Whilst there was nothing wrong with the site, it was clean and obviously well run. It just didn't feel like a campsite in France, there were too many Brits, by our reckoning the 'campers' tents/caravans/ mobile homes etc, were 90% british with the odd Spanish or German. And as for the 'static caravan' village at the end of the campsite that appeared to be 100% British and in some cases behaved like it.
The site shop was very good and the staff were brilliant and responded when there were problems, we had gangs of kids from the statics gathering on the corner near the 'basketball' court area well after this area should have been closed off and when we complained they chased them and made sure they didn't come back the next night. Even though the poor girl did get a mouthful of abuse for moving them on.
The area the site is in is lovely and Samaur is a wonderful town to explore, and there are some amazing Chateau to visit, would recommend Chateau de Breze, what looks like an ordinary Chateau with an ancient medeival chateau underneath it - totally amazing.
Will definitely visit the area again just wouldn't stay here.

This site is excellent in terms of facilities and location in the Loire valley. Staff friendly & helpful, pitches large, toilet facilities inc baby bath and are very clean. Indoor and outdoor pools good and clean. They have a free bouncy castle. Shop good. Restaurant a little expensive. Location is ideal, being in the centre of the Loire valley region which is a beautiful area. Be prepared for a little rain as every time we've been in June -August it rains a few day's.

We have been camping in France for many years now and have stayed on many excellent camp sites but this one is definitely the best one we have ever found. It is very conveniently located about 10 minutes drive outside Saumur along the banks of the Loire. The site itself has entrance barriers which are operated by a code which made the site feel very secure. When we arrived we had a very easy check in with a very patient receptionist who put up with my attempts to speak French although all the staff spoke excellent English. We were shown to our pitch which was as we had requested, a quiet pitch away from the children's play area as we have no kids of our own. The pitch itself was enormous with plenty of room for our trailer tent, day room and car with a large space about the size of a badminton court left over at the front for sitting on or playing badminton! Even the largest of tents will have no problem fitting on these pitches and there is no extra charge for additional gazebos or pup tents etc as you pay a single fee for the pitch and then a supplement per person. We felt that for the space and facilities the site was very well priced. It was actually quite a bit cheaper than other sites we stayed on this summer but was considerably better. Every pitch has EHU and many have their own water supply but even those without their own water are only a short distance from a drinking water tap. There are a number of toilet blocks on site which were cleaned regularly. The one nearest to our pitch was a unisex block but some of the other blocks have separate facilities for males and females. I felt really sorry for the girl who cleaned our block because the weather was quite rainy when we were there and she had no sooner finished cleaning the floors than wet muddy feet messed them up again but I felt the staff did an excellent job under the circumstances of keeping the facilities as clean as they could. There were also plenty of dishwashing sinks round the back of the toilet block and a laundry room with 4 washing machines and 1 tumble drier beside reception. Although we don't have any children, the children that we did see were having a great time. There are two main children's play areas with slides/swings etc on a large grassy area in the middle of the site. One of these seemed to have equipment suited to very small children under about the age of 5/6 while the other had larger play equipment for older children. There was also a large all weather games pitch which was completely fenced round and which seemed to be mainly used by older children and their dads to play football or basketball. The pools on site were excellent. There was one main outdoor pool with a shallow area for children plus another larger very deep pool which had a sliding roof which was closed in poor weather and opened when the sun was shining. There was also quite a large plunge pool for the various water slides to land in and a separate toddlers paddling pool. The pool area had lots of sun beds and chairs and we always managed to get one when we wanted one which was good. No footwear is allowed in the pool area, it must be left outside and then you walk through a foot bath before you can enter the pool enclosure so the whole area was very clean. The shop on site was very well equipped and fresh bread was baked on site several times a day. There is nothing quite like warm baguettes and pastries for breakfast! There was also a reasonable selection of fresh fruit and veg and all the usual necessities like milk and butter and spreads etc. The take away was located beside the shop and sold all the usual fries, burgers, chicken, pizza etc. We only ate from it once as we are not big fast food fans but the food was perfectly nice. The site restaurant was lovely. There was an indoor and an outdoor seating area with the outdoor area covered by a large canopy. Initially we thought that the menu was quite limited however we quickly realised that this menu is supplemented by a number of daily specials which are written on a small blackboard. These specials were very tasty and reasonably good value. L'etang de la Breche is very well situated for visiting a lot of the tourist attractions of the Loire region by car and there is also good cycling in the area so take your bikes although bikes can be hired on site. All in all we thought this site was fantastic and we will definitely return here in the future.

We were VERY impressed with this Castels site. We sailed into Le Havre and had a very stress-free drive (approx 206 miles) most of which was Autoroute costing 20 euros for our folding camper. We had pre-requested a pitch on the perimeter of the large playing area/games field and we were not disappointed. The pitches are absolutely HUGE, the largest we have seen. A plus is that you pay for the pitch + ehu / water (if required) + people. You can have any number of smaller tents, gazebos etc with no extra charge. One thing we noticed straight off is that many families seemed to know each other - now we know why - they love the site so much they return year after year (we too will be returning next summer!). In my opinion, the pitches on the perimeter of the playing field are the best. There are others which we would not like - especially a couple right opposite the dish-washing area and the loos. You would do well to request a pitch away from these (their website shows a map of the pitches). The site caters exceptionally well for families. A nice outdoor pool, a separate childrens' / toddler pool, another large pool which can be covered if the weather is inclement and several water slides. There are safety gates at all entrances into the pool to stop very young children wandering off (or in) on their own, which is excellent. All shoes must be left outside on the racks provided and a notice advises that men / boys must wear trunks as opposed to swimming shorts - though this was not enforced during the two weeks we were there. There is a lovely shaded patio area, perfect for those afternoon ice creams (all Carte D'Or and gorgeous!) and of course an ice cold beer or Kir Cassis! In the evening, the restaurant serves excellent food albeit a little on the expensive side but they do advise of the English equivalent on the menu - something you will rarely find in other local restaurants - so at least you will know what you are ordering. There is also another outdoor patio area between the bar and the shop and here you can order a take away pizza, burgers etc. The pizzas were gorgeous, generously topped super-thin crusts. The shop on site has your basics - bread (cooked hourly), milk, a selection of hams & cheeses, snacks, toiletries, soft drinks, children's toys, postcards etc. In July & August the shop opens at 8.15am and you can smell the freshly baked croissants, pain-au-chocolats, pain-au-raisins and baguettes from several yards away. Teenagers aged between 16 - 18 years are allowed a selection of alcoholic drinks in the bar such as beer, cider, alcopops & some wines. No Spirits. There are two large children's play areas, a netted area for games such as football and basketball. There are several shower blocks and toilets however some are shared male/female and some are not so you will need to keep an eye on the signs on the doors! If there are no signs, you can safely assume that it is for either male or female. This site is one of quietest sites after 9pm we have ever come across - incredible considering it's size! The reception area is open early (8.30am I thiokn!) and has a huge display of leaflets for local attractions. Some of them are available with discounts but you will need to ask at reception about these (I think they include Zoo de Doue, Futuroscope amongst others) The local area is amazing. Saumur is lovely with it's Chateau, narrow winding streets, fabulous Saturday market and numerous restaurants. You can park free of charge at either of the two car parks next to the river to the left or right of the roundabout as you cross the bridge from Ile-de-Saumur into Saumur Centre. There is also another large car park on Ile-de-Saumur with 200 places -again free of charge. We also visited the local wine suppliers Gratien Meyer. It is just outside Saumur on the same side of the river and at first glance, it looks like a posh hotel perched on the hillside. If you require a tour of the caves (recommended) be sure to book in advance as it will likely be in French only otherwise. Another tip - if you visit Saumur market on a Saturday, there will be a stand offering wine tasting (by Gratien Meyer) and if you ask about their tours, they will likely offer you a coupon for a free visit. All of the wines you taste are available much cheaper in the local Intermarche or E.L'eclerc. For camping supplies or sports gear - visit the local Decathlon, just outside Saumur.

Nice site located on the banks of the Loire just outside Saumur. After a long drive from Calais we found the approach road was closed due to road works, may cause a problem if you are towing as the detour is winding and narrow. Helpful staff, clean toilets, showers and free hairdryers. The lake view pitches are lovely but beware of mozzies if you choose to camp there as you will be covered in attractive red blotches, better to choose a perimeter pitch. There all several 'holiday package' units but they tend to be grouped together away from the tourers - handy though to 'book swap' and see the info brochures. Weather was dreadful rain everyday but the site remained relatively dry considering the thunder like deluge. Not a lot for older children but excellent for pre school. Nice swimming pool indoor and out with plenty of sun beds [not that we needed those] enjoyed the pool even in the rain - once you are wet you might as well get wetter then have a hot shower. Well stocked shop with bread baked hourly, large supermarket a short drive away. Lots to see - visit the tank museum, troglodite caves and of course the wine outlets.
