Spent 11 days here earlier this month and we were very impressed. Our first French camping holiday as a family so it was a great introduction. We had an enormous pitch - made our tent look tiny! - and it suited us perfectly - there was a large green area in front with two children's play areas so we could sit on our pitch and watch the kids play, or use the green area for badminton / boules etc. Also close to the loo block, pool, shop etc. Families with older children (ours are 8 and 5) might prefer to be a bit further away towards the pond. If you look on their website there is a plan of the campsite - we had pitch C07. All the pitches have trees / hedges around (as far as I could see) and this meant (on our pitch anyway) that there was always a mix of sun and shade. The sleeping part of our tent never got direct sun which kept it cooler - remember we are Scottish and can't cope with too much sun! The loo block we used had approx. 8 loos and 10 showers with wash basins in. Never had to queue and there were always cleaners about so I was impressed with the cleanliness. Shop was well stocked and had fresh bread 3 times a day. You can order pizza and other snacks (chips etc) from the bar - handy for the day you arrive. We ate in the restaurant once but weren't that impressed. Children liked hiring the pedal go-karts. Pools were a great hit especially the "super slidy slides". Pool - and indeed the whole site - got busy during our second week but it was fine and still well managed. We found plenty to do in the surrounding area - the troglodyte dwellings at Rochemenier (and the restaurant in the same village - my OH especially liked that one, once he'd decided to work his way through the bottle of wine which was included in the menu!); the fantastic zoo at Doué la Fontaine; gardens at Villandry; Saumur itself (and the Musée des Blindés - tank museum); free guided tour (and wine tasting!) of the caves at Veuve-Amiot. Only disappointing visit was to the Ecole Nationale d'Equitation - riding school - most of the horses were out and it was deathly dull - but I think we were unlucky on the day we went. There are plenty of châteaux but some of the most impressive ones are further east past Tours (still do-able in a day if you're keen but we didn't want to travel that much once we were there). A great holiday and I would recommend the site.

Third visit to site, very friendly and helpful staff.spot Brigitte riding round on her bicycle!, very clean washing /WC facilities put UK sites to shame, large secluded pitches excellent for larger family tents. Shop now open all day - go early for pain au chocolat or raisin!. Facilities superb, managed swing golf in about 150 strokes (lost count), Saumur excellent Saturday market, produce good quality, beware it is easy to go OTT buying prawns and Moules!, hope to return in 2007.

Just returned following our first visit to this site which was recommended by friends. Our 7 year- old loved the pools (including great slides) and having the indoor pool was handy on cooler days. There was also a good play area for younger ones and a very popular fenced play pitch for football/basketball/cycling. Well organised and friendly, if there is any noise/trouble (invariably from a few English teenagers), the management seem to be pretty proactive about sorting it out. The staff in Reception were very helpful and there was much information about things to do in the local area. Nine-hole 'golf course' is really one level below pitch and put and is a bit below par at present in our view. Pony rides, go-karts and tennis courts gave us plenty to do on site. We thought some pitches were a little too much into the trees, but we were lucky being in a quiet area overlooking a wide expanse of grass for playing. Can't say the toilets were spotless but they were fine and seemed to be cleaned pretty regularly. Nice mix of nationalities - probably predominantly English with quite a few Dutch. Restaurant was good value. Quiet at night, though not silent as a road and railway line run nearby. Would definitely go again, but would want to secure one of our favoured pitches. There were lots of places to visit nearby - within 25 minutes were the Abbey at Fontevraud, the excellent chateau at Montsoreau, Zoo de Doue, Saumur itself, and the Troglodyte caves at Rochmenier.

Just come back from this friendly site. Toilets cleaned at least 3 times a day, did not have to wait for showers. Although site was full, it was quite between 10pm -8am, and not too noisy during the day. Good size plots, next to the Loire River although not much water in due to drought. Saumur is lovely town. Would recommend this site to adults and young families.

Very nice Castels site. When we booked we were asked numerous questions about our preferences for a pitch, and we were very pleasantly surprised to be allocated EXACTLY what we'd asked for! Pitches on the whole are very large. Site seemed very friendly with good pools, nice restaurant, very pleasant staff, plenty to keep children occupied and clean facilities. Lots of chateau to visit if you're into that sort of thing but the area itself we didn't find particularly attractive, the river was almost dry when we were there! Would definitely go back to the site and happy to recommend it.

August 2004 We have stayed at this site virtually every year in the last ten years, can't stop going back to the place. Although we have been elsewhere as well, we still go back to Etang De La Breche
It is a very popular site of about 200 large pitches. It's advisable to book early if you have any particular preferences for the location of your pitch.
The owners are very friendly. The site has been constantly updated over the years, the drive on to site normally turning in to spot the changes!
Some Keycamp and Eurocamp mobile homes and tents on the far end of the site. But plenty of independent campers too.
Good size pools. Plenty of things to do on site and in the area. Restaurant has inproved in the last couple of years wiht a new Chef, prices reasonable.
Our excuse for not returning this year.... we liked the area so much we have bought a house in Thouars 30km south of the site...
