We had a lovely holiday in Godshill but this had more to do with the area and the gorgeous weather than the campsite itself unfortunately.
On arrival Bill, the owner, was charming and friendly, showing us where to pitch, down to the last inch. We were astounded at the lack of space though - our pitch was not 10M. We were only a couple of feet from adjacent tents and we could actually hear our neighbours breathing in their sleep! A photograph of the site showing cars at the pitch would give a better idea of the allotted space - the one on here is misleading.
Many of the families at Croft Cottage are friends who go every year, indeed they gather, 20 or 30 strong, around a campfire each and every night to chat and sing from dusk until around 11pm. If you're the type of camper who likes to get the children to bed for ten then sit and enjoy a peaceful quiet drink under the stars then this site may not be for you.
We loved being able to have a fire though. Because this is a small site the sheer noise of the many games going on in the middle, a few feet from your pitch, can be at times quite intense though some pitches were better placed away from the action. The organised activities could make some children feel a bit left out if not their cup of tea. Ours had little interest in 'chicken time' or the talent show.
Bill rounds people up for volleyball every night at 8pm but will leave you alone if you're not keen.
If it all gets too much there's a decent child friendly pub within walking distance, the massive site next door, or the beautiful New Forest with its many activities and attractions right on the doorstep.
As clearly stated there are just two toilets at Croft Cottage. This simply isn't enough for the numbers and you will need your own facilities.
When the fires are doused at 11pm queues for the loos can be 5 or 6 people deep! The one and only shower is surprisingly efficient and if you don't mind when you use it you will be able to shower daily - you just need to keep watching for it to become vacant!
I can see why so many love this site but unfortunately we know there are better simple family friendly sites out there.
Young children adore it though and clearly many of them know each other from previous years holidays.
The owners are friendly and seem to love running the place, and their regular and returning visitors are clearly testament to their good work.

As a previous reviewer has said, I'm not sure I want others knowing about this site, but after a lovely stay I feel it is only fair. We opted to stay in the tepee. Normally we camp in our own tent, but and unexpected lack of a suitable car and two kids wanting to go camping, this seemed like a good option.
As other have said the campsite is great, very laid back, great for kids, dogs are not a problem as long as they behave and in a lovely setting.
As for the tepee, very nice not having to pitch your own tent (especially if it rains as you are packing to go home). The tepee is large enough for a family, but cosy enough for a couple. Shame the weather was not warm enough, as I would have liked to fall asleep watching the stars. Unlike the rest of the campsite, the Tepee is available all the time in season, so you can have the whole site to your self.
Lovely location and very welcoming.

A great site run by Bill and Helen who are very friendly and helpful. We stayed for 4 nights in a tent and enjoyed our time. In the middle of the field there is a basketball hoop, football goal, tennis net and badminton net, great for the kids (and adults!)
All tents are pitched around the edge of the field but plenty of room for all. Every morning the children can help Bill collect the eggs from the chicken run. Only one shower and two toilets, small but very clean. Washing up sink available but this is not a covered area so a bit of a nuisance when its raining.
Only a few minutes walk from Sandy Balls centre and you can pay to use their indoor / outdoor pool (not in August though). Sandy Balls also has a great supermarket, restaurant, and take-away.

Yet another FANTASTIC holiday at Bill and Helen's campsite!
My husband, 7 children (ranging from age 3-16yrs) and myself had the BEST time there yet again.
A relaxed family atmosphere with just enough pitches to retain the cosy friendly feeling we love!
Bill and Helen are the perfect host/ess.
Even though the campsite is right outside their door, you are never made to feel as if you are encroaching.
Always something to do on site thanks to the volleyball, football, tennis and sml children's play frame (we especially loved the established volleyball game that took place each evening. )
You really get to know all the other campers thanks to Bills enthusiasm for us all to take part!
Amenities on site are enough for the size of the campsite and plenty to do in the surrounding areas whether its a trip to the new forest or to some of the beaches which we reached within 1/2 an hour!
Sandy Balls campsite next door was very handy for laundry, milk etc and FREE indoor play area for the younger children (and the all important internet access for teenagers!)
Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves once again!
Will be back next year!

If, 2 months ago, someone had told me that I would be happily showering and dressing in a cubicle the size of a telephone box, I would have snorted and laughed the informant out of the room!
Let's face it, we all hate the post shower trick of balancing on one flip-flop whilst trying to negotiate a new sock onto a damp foot.
I have to say that when we arrived (two adults, two 6 year olds) at Croft Cottage campsite, I checked out the washing facilities and immediately made a snap decision - '6 out of 10' I told my husband.
As it turns out it's a comment which really was unfair and I'll explain why.
Yes, the shower box is tiny and occasionally you kick your heels waiting a couple of mins to have get to the loo, BUT, this campsite is the most fantastic family friendly site I've ever been to!
There are only 15 pitches round the outside of a pretty field, and in the middle there are badminton/volleyball nets, raquets lying around to use whenever, a kids climbing frame up to age 8 and a generous layout for everyone to enjoy.
Our kids had their bikes and would cycle about or run around with the other children all day.
We had very little to worry about since they were
Always in view but never in our hair (if you like your kids to be free to entertain themselves in the old fashioned sense, then this is the place).
A word about Bill and his family who own the site. What a lovely welcome we received, it was more like visiting a distant relative. They only use the campsite 28 days a year so they haven't been jaded by days and days of stroppy campers. And I'm not sure anyone who was at the site was of the stroppy kind. Another bonus is that we sussed that the other campers were making fires in braziers so we got some kindling to add to our BBQ and Bill let us have a few logs from his 'pile'.
A campfire is the cheer you need when it's pouring rain (during our time it rained for 3 days almost solid, but the field has good drainage so it didn't get boggy).
I don't want to really tell everyone to go there as it's a little jewel in the camping crown. It's right next door to Sandy Balls, but a world apart! So if you don't want to be in a regimented, 'row upon row' campsite, Croft cottage with its hearty atmosphere and amiable campers, is the place to head for. If you can beat back the regular customers, that is.

We have just returned from a very relaxing holiday at this site. Our 3 children (10,8 and 4) loved it and are desperate to go back. Toby the horse was lame, so unable to be ridden, but the children didn't mind as they were too busy playing with new friends on this very safe site.
The toilets and shower are basic, but kept spotlessly clean. The owners are very helpful too. There is a freezer for ice blocks, and Sandy Balls next door has a laundrette and Spa shop, although we preferred the Co op in Fordingbridge (5 mins away, where there is a Chinese takeaway and fish & chip shop.
A lovely site.

Just spent our first weekend ever camping at Croft Cottage, and what a lovely introduction it was!
Lovely site, very friendly, with the tents etc arranged around the outside of the field and play equipment in the middle - volleyball & tennis/badminton nets, goals & climbing frame, as well as a table tennis table set of to the side.
The two toilets (one male, one female) are in metal portaloo type cabins, as well as one shower in the same type of structure, plus an outdoor washing up sink. Having never camped before, I was a bit worried about how I'd find this, but I needn't have worried as they were nice and clean and the shower was lovely and hot.
It was great to be able to potter or sit around the tent and be able to see the kids wherever they went. Our previoulsy unsociable children were gone in about 5 minutes of us arriving and made friends really quickly, as the site is so geared up for kids! Very peaceful at night - didn't really hear much noise coming from Sandy Balls despite having a pitch that bordered their hedge.
Kids went to look at the chickens & eggs in the morning, after they had bought (quite expensive) cakes from the lady who sets up a stall in the morning. Unfortunately, Toby the horse had a bad leg so there was no pony riding, but that can't be helped!
Obviously in a lovely location, being so close to the New Forest, and we were lucky that we had sunny weather which I imagine always helps!
Altogether a fantastic weekend and a great introduction to camping - so glad I picked this lovely site as our first! My 6 year old was crying after we came home because he wanted to be back in the tent, so I'd call that a success!

This site can only be described as a hidden treasure, the owners Bill and Helen were
Incredibly helpful and friendly.
The children thoroughly enjoyed ' chicken time' and a ride on Toby the pony every morning and
Bills 'waterslide' and Volleyball game.
Site rules were adhered to and a gentle reminder to those who were a bit too noisy after 10pm.
Toilets and shower were adequate for the size of the site, some occasional short queues.
Some background noise from Sandy balls but not a problem.
Sandy Balls campsite is about a 2 minute walk away for shopping bits and bobs and swimming pool (no swimming during August)
Fordingbridge is a mile and half away for pubs and bigger shops.
We will definitely be going again next year if we can get a pitch at this popular site.

We have just returned from our two week holiday in our tent and we all agree it has been our best summer holiday as a family. This was largely due to the fact that we stayed at the most wonderful campsite, Croft Cottage, which is run by Bill and Helen. Our children, Jack and Emily had such a fantastic time and at the end of each day were keen to get back to the site to play volley ball or have water fights with new friends they had made. Toby the horse was a huge hit as was chicken time and Florence and Katy, Bills two lovely girls. We had two weeks of perfect sunshine which enabled us to enjoy the forest by bikes and walks. We also visited a number of beaches [about half an hour away] and Moors Valley country park. There was so much to do in the area that I'm sure we will return next year. The site was always clean as were the toilets and shower and the shop at Sandy Balls was very handy. We cannot speak highly enough and certainly were not wanting to end our lovely holiday. Thankyou Bill, Helen, Katy and Flosie

This is a great small site located in a superb area of the New Forest, not far from Fordingbridge. The surrounding area is great for cycling.
The site was popular with families with young children. The toilets and shower are indeed small and basic, but they were kept very clean. Pitches are level and were well drained (this was the summer of 2007!). Our kids loved the egg collecting and pony ride in the morning.
The Sandy Balls shop was about 5 mins walk away. You could hear a bit of background noise from them but this was really quite insignificant.
We stayed for a long weekend and will definitely be back next year.
