We’ve been holidaying in this area for years and years and we often struggle to find decent-prized, well-located accommodation, so we were delighted to find La Vallee. It’s in a glorious position on a hill so from various points in the site you can see the sea, the town and the countryside. Houlgate itself (around 15 minutes’ walk) is charming and there is a lovely long and sandy beach.
Despite some poor reviews, the site itself didn’t disappoint at all. All the facilities are very central so everything is easy to walk to. Only the indoor pool was open when we visited but my husband and son really enjoyed it; in the summer, there are two outdoor pools and slides too. The bar is housed in an original Norman house and is full of character; they also do food to eat in and out – all very simple (pizzas, chips, sausages, lasagne – that kind of thing) but reasonably priced, and it makes a change from cooking as we don’t tend to go offsite to eat in the evenings. The shop on the site is useful although there are plenty of decent supermarkets within easy driving distance. Bread and croissants etc can be ordered each evening and my children loved the freedom of being able to go off on their own in the morning to collect the breakfast. The site staff all seemed very helpful and friendly, and full of smiles, particularly with my children, whose French is pretty basic! We had booked via Eurocamp so had the back-up of their reps to sort out any issues and they were very efficient and enthusiastic.
We were delighted with our mobile home as it was large, clean and extremely well-equipped and well-maintained. Pitch sizes aren’t the largest we’ve seen and there is quite a variety in the quality of the pitch and its location but that’s the same on most campsites. The pitches for touring caravans and tents in the middle of the site are particularly good as all have lovely views and a really nice open feel to them.
There is masses to do in the area: Deauville – smart town with designer shops; Trouville – lovely fish market and restaurants plus an aquarium and great beach; Honfleur – chocolate box charm and good restaurants and of course, all the D-Day beaches and museums, plus the towns of Caen and Bayeux are well worth visiting.
We had a lovely time here; we genuinely did love this site and will definitely return.

A very nice site with plenty to do. We went in September so was reasonably quiet, I suspect it is much busier mid season as lots for the kids to do, including 2 pools and a water slide.
In reasonable walking distance of the town and beach. Houlgate is a nice old-fashioned resort with a huge beach at low tide. Parts of the beach can however be dangerous as the tide comes in very quickly. There is a patrolled area with all facilities you would expect.
The pitches are a good size and we paid 2 euros a night extra for water and drainage. This is a camping Cheque site so you have to pay the 2 euros in addition to using your cheques for a service pitch.
Our only problem was with the electric, which at 6amp, struggles to run a modern Uk caravan. It was a case of switching off something to use the microwave, we kept the fridge on gas most of the time and ditched the electric kettle.
We would however return as the location makes up for the drawbacks.

Stopped here for three nights at the end of August mainly to visit a couple of the D-Day sites.
The site is signposted but look out for them carefully because we missed one that was hidden behind a beautiful hanging basket!
We hadn't booked, but it wasn't a problem since the site was at most, only half full.
We were allocated a pitch, but when we saw it we preferred the one opposite and this wasn't a problem. We had lovely views of the hillside opposite, a bit of the sea. All pitches were fairly well sized and mature hedging seperating them.
Water point, toilet block, and chemical disposal were all reasonably close.
The toilets were european with loo roll in the cubicles. Showers were warm but pressure dropped a lot as soon as a loo was flushed, tap turned on, or another shower in use.
The pool was great for the kids. Unheated outdoor pool, waterslides, and heated covered pool. They enjoyed spending a couple of hours there.
Other facilities for children are really good as well. They have there own climbing wall, a high ropes course, pony rides, a couple of play areas, football pitch, and A BMX track which (despite not owning a BMX) my son loved!
We had pizzas from the takeaway one night. They were lovely and a good price.
There was entertainment at the bar on one night (a singer) that we could here from our pitch but it wasn't intrusive, just added to the holiday experience, and it stopped at 11pm.
It takes about 15 minutes to walk into Houlgate which is a lovely seaside town with some fanastic buildings as well as a vast expanse of beach. There's a small supermarket in the town as well as several butchers and bakers. Or there are more supermarkets if you head back towards the motorway.
The whole site was well run and very well maintained. It is in a wonderful location and I would happily stay here again if we were in the area.

End of season stop off for us and our three sons (12, 10, 5) just to make the holiday a bit longer before the ferry, so the site was quite quiet. We were the only tent campers in our section, there was a mix of KeyCamp and EuroCamp plus some caravans. We have a Quechua 4. 2 and Quechua 2seconds two man tent and there was plenty of room on our pitch for that and our table and awning. Sandy pitch, quite level, good access to water and not too far from one of the (very clean and well serviced) loo/shower/washing up blocks.
There is a nice indoor/outdoor pool section with watersides and a toddler pool (tight trunks only for men). Access to this is with a wristband you are given on arrival requiring a deposit of €10 each, I panicked a bit as we didn't have the cash but the very pleasant lady behind the desk was happy to swipe my card and delete it when we left.
Wifi is available at €5 for 240 minutes purchased from reception and was relatively good coverage.
We ate take out food both nights and it was fine, nothing amazing but at the end of a three week camping holiday a welcome break from using my coleman to whisk something up for everyone.
The older boys enjoyed a go on the climbing wall one evening (free, long queue) and my youngest son was very excited by a 10 minutes pony ride across the site (€2 long wait but worth it for his happy face).
Houlgate is a lovely town, there are very nice little shops and a big sandy (windy!) beach. We also went over Pegasus bridge to the other side of Caen/Ouistreham and looked at the D Day landing sites and the Canadian museum at Juno beach. Sobering but recommended day out for everyone.
All in all we had a very pleasant time and would go back.

We stayed at La Vallee for 10 days during August. As the name implies the site is set in a valley and there weren't many level pitches. Despite booking well in advance ours was particularly poor. It was small and unlevel to the extent that blocks of wood were given in addition to our levelling ramps to raise the nose of the caravan. Once level, this had the effect of making drainage difficult from the rear of the caravan. It was also quite claustrophobic with our closest neighbour only several feet away.
Facilities were however good, considering that our stay was in peak season we didn't struggle for showers and there was plenty of hot water.
Our two young children loved the park and the swimming pools but be aware that swimming shorts are not allowed - Boys must wear trunks!
Evening entertainment centred around the bar which played music each night. This ceased at 11.00pm sharp but it was a annoyance if you wanted to get to sleep before that time.
Houlgate itself is a lovely seaside town with a nice beach and a good choice of bars, restaurants anf cafes. The resorts of Deauville, Trouville and Honfleur were also well worth a visit.
There was plenty to see and do locally with the D Day landing beaches (and their many museums) and Bayeaux Tapestry nearby.
To sum up, would we return to Noramandy? Definitely yes. Would we return to La Vallee? Probably not.

What negative things can I say about Camping De La Vallee.Nothing. What a great place and Great People. We first went with Euro Camp, then Key Camp and stayed in a static home. Fantastic time both times we decided to go back. On talking to the owner of the campsite, a really funny gentle warm human being who we all miss so much, we spoke about the cost of both companies and ended hiring one of his homes. A saving of almost 900 pounds. WOW. So we went back again, all 5 of us and had a fab time. The place deserves 10 stars. It's friendly, clean, great staff, most of the staff speaks English including the Geordie girl that works in the shop with perfect French. The owner and his wife are such a lovely couple and so friendly. Great bar, Great Pools both indoors and out, Great entertainment, Great Fun for another 14 days. So much so, have booked twice for 2010. Just a great time with so much to see. Lovely town, Restaurants, Markets. Recommend La Patio for the best pizza in Houlgate, go back there every year and they remember us. Once seen never forgotten. You do need a car to see the sites like Pegasus Bridge, a must just for a coffee in the first house to be liberated, the D Day Beaches, the Local Towns. It's a must. So save yourselves some money and book direct. Pay in Euros when you get there and get a better rate of exchange than England. Get a Nationwide account and pay no commission.

Camping de La Vallee is a 4-star campsite situated approx 1km south of the beach resort of Houlgate. On arrival there is a large car park to park in while you book in at reception. Here you will be given your pitch number and an electronic key to get you through the barriers. If you intend using the swimming pool you will also have to leave a deposit to get the necessary wristbands. Also, if you have booked a super pitch with water then remember to ask for the water tap key (another deposit required). Reception also doubles as the food shop and you can reserve bread for the following day.
The campsite has pitches for static caravans as well as tourers but they tend to be separate from each other. The pitches vary in size considerably. There are a few larger pitches but generally they tend to be average in size with some quite small. The campsite is situated on the side of a fairly large hill and has been terraced in an effort to make the pitches flatter, however a number of the pitches do slope in parts. Some pitches look a good size but the usable space is a lot less. The pitches at the higher part of the site give good views over Houlgate.
There are three toilet blocks on site. Originally I thought I was going to have to mark the toilet blocks quite low. For the first few days of our holiday two of these blocks had no hot water, and the block that did have hot water had no hooks in the showers. This made showering awkward, to say the least. However, a few days later the site started to fill out (Ascension Day loomed) and miraculously hot water was restored. I will, however, still knock a couple of points off for the lack of hooks in one block and the fact that it takes them days to replace the empty toilet rolls.
Facilities on site include a good pool area (one pool undercover, one outside pool, and some slides), a friendly bar and restaurant, takeaway service (food ok but nothing special), table tennis tables, games room, play areas, tennis court, football pitch etc. There is plenty of space set aside for children to play. There is also a small laundrette which, I believe, would struggle in peak season.
There is a railway line running alongside the camp. Others have said that rail noise is a problem. We didn’t find this. When we were here the service was infrequent and the trains are hardly express trains. We found the noise from the local Motoball stadium to be far more intrusive (but really it just added to the fun).
There is plenty to do in the area. Firstly, the beaches and harbours. There are plenty of good options close by. Houlgate itself has a nice beach. The resorts of Trouville and Deauville are a few miles away with Honfleur slightly further on. My personal favourite was Villers-Sur-Mer which is just a couple of kilometres east of Houlgate. I would avoid Cabourg. It’s difficult to get to due to a maze of one way streets and not really much there when you do eventually find somewhere to park.
Secondly, the D-Day Landings. This is an area steeped in history and there are plenty of things to do and see. There is the Memorial (Peace Museum) in Caen, the Pegasus Memorial (showing the original Pegasus Bridge and how it was liberated), and many more museums and places of interest particularly close to the beaches west of Caen.
We also visited the CERZA zoo near Lisieux which makes for a good day out and not too far to travel.
We stayed for 12 nights at Camping de La Vallee and had a wonderfully good time. The owners and staff are very friendly and it is a very pleasant place to stay. If this is the area you want to holiday in then I would highly recommend it.

Myself and the wife stayed here for 10 nights in September and really enjoyed the stay. It was quiet as it was heading toward the end of the season and preparation work was under way to close down the site. There seemed to be a number of touring vans staying for a few nights at a time whilst heading back to the UK having spent longer times in the south of France. We found the site to be very clean and tidy with good facilities. Showers good and hot. It was wet on arrival but the drainage was good and in a few days dried out completely. Swimming pool looked good although didn't use it myself and the bar was well stocked on the site. Bicycled around the area into the local villages without any problems. Local supermarkets were easy to find and as usual good value. Ideally located for visiting Deauvile, Honfleur etc. May be a little too far away for some people wanting to visit the war graves and the beaches, we did visit and it made a long day of it. Overall we were happy with the site and would have no trouble going back again in the future. All staff were very helpful.Access to the site is good and pitch sizes for vans are good. The site does slope but not excessively. We are kid free and September suited us on this site for the peace and quiet.

We stayed here for 4 nights with Eurocamp. Had originally booked 7 nights, but in the end we were glad it was only 4. The site as the name suggests overlooks a valley and so the pitches are kind of terraced. It's not a very attractive site compared to others we have stayed in, we really like trees and there was little of this. It also felt rather claustrophobic. Some people may like it but it was not for us.

I cannot praise this site too highly. I cannot comment on the showers/toilets etc as we stopped in a static caravan with Keycamp.
We came here first in 2006 then 2007 and now we have booked for 2008. The site is fabulous and clean. The owners are great but dont take any nonsense if you know what I mean. The shop is adequate and bread can be ordered for the following day.
The bar is slightly small and may be busy in high season but we always come off-season for the peace and quiet. The bar is supposed to be extended for the 2008 season.
Houlgate is a quiet but likeable place with a lovely promenade with excellent sunsets and plenty of choice for eating (French, Chinese and Italian) Especially those just off the main street.
There are two good supermarkets ten minutes away in Dives-sur-mer (Hyper you and Champion)
The market in Dives is housed in a fabulous old building and is worth a visit just for that alone. Don't forget the war memorials and graveyards especially the less well known like the German one in Lisieux. Hard to find but worth it.
