I booked in on 23 July till mon 25 July. Grass long on site, only stopped one night despite paying and booking for 2 nights. Very noisy site due to people being allowed to play football till 3. 30am Sunday morning and shouting. Although resident warden was permanently sited on same field chose to say nothing, these were not young people 25 to 30 years old. When leaving site complained to landlord/landlady, response was we've all been young once.
Only 2 portaloos on site, although toilets available in pub which was part of site.
No lighting on site, also no play ground area. Pub adjacent to site which did cooking between designated hours, provision shop ten min walk.

GREAT SITE, lovely views, friendly landlord and lovely food across at the pub. Toilet across at the pub along with two showers.
There is a shop 5 mins walk away along with park and a steam train that runs in to Matlock, you can also catch a bus in to Bakewell, lots to do and see. There is also a lovely walk across the fields into Matlock. Three other pubs are in walking distance. Just wish they would cut the grass more can be a little to long.
Been to this site now for the last three years a number of times love it !.

Just spent one night at this site. When we arrived we were not impressed at all. We went to look around the area for alternative sites but failed so we returned. We are now glad we did. It is very basic and cheap (£10pn) but the showers and toilets are clean. We were able to pitch the tent where we wanted and there was plenty of room between each tent.
We played a game of cricket together with out disturbing others and were able to have a laugh and a giggle without disturbing other campers.
Only down side was having to cross a road to get to facilities which is not ideal in the middle of the night. Will revisit

We spent 2 nights here. It`s hard to find something positive to say. Grass too long, very uneven field, the 1 water tap was dirty, faulty and surrounded by muck, the toilets / showers were not great with loose toilet seats and no hand drying facilities and across a busy road, which was right next to the site with heavy lorries from about 5am. Like I said it`s hard to find a positive and at £28 for 4 (£14pn) definitely not value for money.
I`m sure the pub grub might be fine but they don`t cook on Tuesday nights (the night we arrived).

Just spent two nights here Friday 12/9 and Sat 13/9. Prices must have gone up since the last reviewer visited. £10 per night for me and my tent. Considering the comments people have made about facilities, which I entirely agree with, I think this is extortionate.
Yes the pub is good, the beer is good, the food is reasonable. I could have used the pub anyway.
When I arrived home this afternoon I checked the reviews to see if my memory had played tricks with me and no, someone is quoting £5pppn.
I phoned the Square & Compass to see if they had made a mistake and the young lady informed that £10pppn was correct.
OK I could have voted with my feet on Friday night but it was late, getting dark and I was wet after a lengthy journey on my motorcycle. I couldn't face packing everything up and going elsewhere. Plus, I had arranged to meet some there friends there the following day.
Sorry if this has turned into a rant rather than a review but I hate having my leg lifted.
So Square & Compass, cut the grass and get some facilities on site if you want to justify this charge.

We had a brilliant few days here. The amenities are as everyone else has said. Not great, but it`s in beautiful countryside and perfect to explore round and about.
The site was tidy and the grass was well cut.
The pub was friendly and the showers were clean and tidy.
Would visit again if we come up that way. And maybe take the kids next time. Mind you,if we did we`d probably miss somewhere to wash up.

Spent the bank holiday weekend here in our caravan with my sister and young family in their tent. The site has lovely views and is close to Matlock and Bakewell but unfortunately that’s about all it has going for it. It is very basic - an uneven field (and the grass still needs cutting) with a cold water tap on it. There are no washing up facilities, no children’s area, no hook-up and only two shower/toilet rooms situated in the pub across a very busy road, which were extremely busy and became quite messy and very wet towards the end of the weekend.
There are no set pitches, and with no one checking or instructing users were to site themselves it became quite a free for all. I know it was bank holiday but the site extremely full with tents almost touching each other.
As mentioned by others the site did seem popular with 'young lads' on the Saturday evening and although they did not cause too much of a problem I did catch one urinating on my car.
This was a very disappointing site especially in view that the charge was as much if not more than we pay for sites that have better facilities and are far better maintained

Great site BUT not for families in my experience. It was packed the weekend we went mainly with young people and on the Saturday night I don't think anyone went to bed 'til gone 3am on the Saturday with various groups led by there own guitar players!
£5pppn is very reasonable but the toilet block is basically two unisex rooms, both with one toilet and one shower. Though when the pubs is open you can use the pub toilets.
Next to main road but not very busy or noisy. Square and Compass pub is nice, with reasonable food, but they don't know how to cook steak a whole range of request in our group, from very rare to well done, were met with steaks that were actually medium.
Surrounding countryside was beautiful and well worth exploring. Other pubs in nearby two dales are good honest counrty pubs.

We have just returned from a very wet weekend camping with our family at the Square and Compass! The field has lovely views, but the grass could do with a good cut. The site is well situated for a great day out at Gullivers ( brilliant for kids aged 7 - 12 ), only a 10 minute drive away. We found the landlord over at the Square and Compass very nice and accommodating, and the price of the pitch was excellent. The only thing that lets the site down is no washing up facilities on site and having to go over to the pub ( quite a busy main road) for the toilet. The site got very busy with younger campers during saturday, and was still noisy in the early hours. Overall a nice site, but having young children we would visit during the week, rather than on a weekend.

The weather was atrocious when we arrived on Friday the 13th ! I really liked the site, but do agree with previous campers comments. The site is in a lovely location, on the Derwent Valley. Locally there are many amenities & places to visit. The site is run by the Square & Compass Pub/Restaurant/BB which is situated just across the road from the campsite. The landlord & staff are very friendly & serve good ales/food. I would also recommend the Three Stags Inn which is only 5 minutes walk away, over the river bridge in the village. Train buffs will enjoy Peak Rail, with Darley Dale station being approximately 10 mins walk away. For campers who want a break from cooking, I also highly recommend the 'Shalimar Indian Restaurant' which is on the A6 going towards Bakewell. They do a takeaway service (which is free for orders over £30 plus a free bottle of wine) They delivered our order to the campsite at the agreed time & the food was superb. Also on the A6 in Darley Dale I noticed there was fine looking Chip shop, with customers queueing to get in. Sadly I would like to make a few criticisms of the actual site. The grass does need cutting and there is also a lot of grass cuttings about, which proved to be very messy in the wet weather. There are only two combined shower/toilet rooms situated in the pub building. At peak times, expect to wait for these if you need a shower or even worst for the loo when the pub is shut ! I was informed by a regular visitor to this site, that it is popular with young lads at the weekend & this was the case during my visit. Most were very well behaved but there were a fairly large group of CHAV types who were noisy, playing loud music & shouting in the early hours. I was shocked to see how much trash they left in the morning when they departed. Nevertheless, I would visit this site again, but maybe not at the weekend.
