Lovely quiet, no frills, rural site once you find it! Notice is extremely faded and there is no signage to it at all. Very new owners apparently who are intending to improve things like that, and adding a shower.
As previously said there is one toilet in the porch of the house (only cold water in taps)) and no shower. There is a washing up sink in a small barn. We couldn't find an external tap except on the single EHU unit (after the van parked there had left) and it is very low so big container not easy to fill but you can fit tap adaptors for a hose.
There is one hard standing with EHU and so we went onto the levelish grass just adjacent to that and whilst it seemed quite dry nevertheless after one night (no rain) we were quite sunken in and one wheel did churn a bit of mud to get out, so be careful with vans on the grass (and we are not that heavily loaded) There is a rough gravelly area between the washing up barn and the static caravan (not being used atm) so a van could go there if campers aren't parked there.
No problem with the lanes in our Symbol (5. 4m) but some are quite narrow. £16 per night, 2 adults, van and no EHU.

Lovely site, quiet as described good location for walkers. We loved it and are going back September if there is room.
The site is not over booked which is brilliant for us.
The duke of Edinburgh people were there 5 tents, and were fine no noise no mess left etc.
What do people expect when going to sites in the country except small lanes? (see other campers comment) it's very easy to find and caravan can get in and up and down the 'small lanes' easily. There is 1 100 meter single track road which is the only one someone may have to back up on.
Well maintained and clean. I will keep going back because it is quiet and out of the way.
The owners are lovely too, very friendly. We will be taking one of our 3 dogs this time. I cannot wait!

Have just spent two very pleasant nights at Derbyshire Hills. Welcomed with a mug of tea and digestives, which is a first, from owner, Steve. This is a small, sheltered, well maintained, nicely arranged campsite in a picturesque spot.
The pitches are generally level, and you are surrounded by ancient stone walls and two Shetland ponies, who gallop around the field in the early hours, like the headless horseman. There is an old shed which provides; sink, microwave, kettle and fridge. There is only one toilet situated at the farm house.
We were somewhat spoilt during our stay, as the site had been scheduled to be closed, there was only one other tent, there. There was room for about 20 pitches. I gather the site is used for the Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme, and weekend regulars. The current rate is £10 a pitch.
Derbyshire Hills is well located. The pub in Foolow, about half a mile, cross country, has a reasonable selection of beer and the food was nice enough, although with country prices of £9. 50 upwards. There was also a very interesting pub, The Stag with two heads, next to the cafe, which the owner recommends, It's like the Slaughtered Lamb. Only serves beer.
There is some excellent walking in the area, and the campsite is a good base. We visited Chatsworh, Eyam and Castleton.
This campsite could do with a shower, if you wanted to stay for more than a couple of nights. Nevertheless, a great weekender.

Had a lovely 3 night stay here in July 2012 to give our new Bear Lake 6 tent a test outing.
We were met by Steve who was very friendly and helpful and provided with the customary tray of tea and biscuits which was very much appreciated!
The site is smashing, quite small and very picturesque, almost giving you the feeling of camping in someones large back garden.
Very clean and well maintained with low stone walling around the boundary, leading on to further fields one of which was home to two very friendly shetland ponies.
Eyam village is close nearby and we had a very nice meal one evening at the Bulls Head in Foolow which is only a 15 minute walk down the road.
Toilets were kept very clean and the 'hut' with pot washing facilities, microwave and kettle came in very useful.
Its a shame that there are no showers or freezer on site but all in all a super little campsite and we would not hesitate to recommend or return there.

Spent 3 nights here during that really warm week. Warden was really welcoming and made us aware at the outset that a Duke of Edinburgh award group would be coming. We were not deterred.
The grass was lush and green, if a little long; the site was immaculate; we pitched in the best spot - level ground sheltered by dry stone walls. He brought us a tray of tea and biscuits; he showed us the kitchen shed, complete with kettle, toaster, microwave, fridge and sink with hot and cold water; and the lovely, clean, toilet facilities with h&c basin; and made us feel very welcome. He was on hand throughout the day. The DofE group were great, well behaved and some were quite chatty. Had a really relaxing time.
Things we didn't need: chairs - there were some on site; the caravan pitch with electric hook-up; the shower gel - there was no shower; the wet weather shelter - it didn't rain!
Enjoyed walking, 3 pubs in walking distance all of which served food as well as beer! Shop was a bit further afield (Tideswell, Eyam or Buxton).
Brilliant site. Would we go back? - You bet, but we are campers, not glampers!

Here is what we found but some comments may be already duplicated else where.
If you want all mod cons, music, things for kids to do, attractions, shops, to be entertained, showers, tent electric hook up then look else where and find another camp site as this doesn’t have it. However if you want the basics with beautiful scenery, friendly campsite owners in the heart of the peak district then this is it. You will be woken with natures intended chorus of birds, a cockerel and a nearby peacock with mist clearing from the surrounding country side ( early June )
Be warned that the Grindlow approach single track roads are not for large campervans or caravans. Note there are also some nasty blind junctions on the single track roads. Grindlow consists of a handful of cottages and farms and you can easily miss the campsite as it just looks like you are going up a small private drive with a few cottages. (look for a green flag on a pole or the small sign on the ground, rh side at the entrance to the drive way. ) If you blink you can miss Grindlow all together. If you are going to visit at the back end of the year check the weather forecast as it gets cut off with snow, that Steve (site owner)has to clear by hand, as he informs me.
The site will hold no more than 20 small tents typically for Duke of Edinburgh but usually in a busy period about 15 family mid size tents. There is only x1 campervan slot with EHU and water supply. Also with x1 static caravan for rent (unable to comment on this but there is a little swing for the kids and assume it is for the static van only use as it has a small fence around it. )
There is one toilet attached to the cottage that is always clean with loo roll, fresh towels and mopped tiled floor. This is at most about a 150ft away. Even though there is no EHU for tents there is a small outbuilding again no more than about 80ft away from all areas. This has a shared fridge, kettle, toaster, microwave, single sink for washing up and one electric point for charging phones etc.
The sink is slightly high but this is overcome by a wooden pallet to stand on. There is also a small clothes airer for any washing you might need to do and a few chairs to sit on if you have to wait for the facilities. The water boiler for washing up quickly goes cold so boil the kettle before you start washing up, it's not a problem. There are also several bins for different types of recycling. When we were on site it was quiet so there was never a queue for any of the above but at busy times you may have to wait.
The ground is reasonably level and a bit stony a few inches down in a few places but not a problem. It is set on 3 areas. One area is behind a barn building that has a roof over a concrete area where you could hang clothes or have a meal if wet. Another area is at the foot of the site and another up towards the side, all surrounded by stone walling offering some wind protection with 4 or 5 trees dotted around. We were allowed to pitch anywhere but it was quiet.
No cars are allowed next to the tents but what is a 50ft walk at maximum. The car park may get busy at some times that may prove tight but we didn't see it.
At the end of the day it depends what you want from your camp site, we came for the walking and tranquillity, we were not disappointed. However there are some nearer walks on the door step of Derbyshire hills, just get the OS map out. Steve & Brenda provide some printed leaflets of the surrounding places to visit and some lighter walks with a daily weather report. As mentioned before if you want to sit around and read a book, paint or walk then this is the place. If you have unruly noisy children, dogs or indeed if you are a loud party person then look else where and don’t spoil this site. There are plenty of other sites who will accommodate this type of behaviour.
We will definitely be going again even though we thought we could not survive without showers or electric hook up. How wrong we were. Yes its a small sacrifice to pay for the quietness of no radios or TVs etc and getting away from it all.
Well done to Brenda & Steve for providing and creating such an individual site. The cup of tea / coffee on arrival is a lovely touch. See you next time.

We went to this site to pitch our tent on a trial run for one night before going on holiday. However it was raining and the tent was damp so we stayed another night in the hope it would dry out.
The site is tucked quietly away from main roads, up a single lane road and surrounded by lovely views of hills and fields. There is only room for a handful of tents but it is so quiet and peaceful - I cannot remember the last time I was away from any kind of traffic hum in the background.
On arrival we were met with a warm smile and a cup of tea, and shown straight away where the amenities were. There is only one loo, as previous reviewers have mentioned, and despite there being four tents (including ours) that wasn't a problem.
The loo has a sink, clean towels, anti-bacterial soap and hot water. It is cleaned often, which I can vouch for as my son seemed to need to go a lot and had muddy feet, but every time I went the floor was clean!
There is a shelter to sit under if it rains, and chairs are provided. You can sit and watch the rain move around the hills, or watch the vast array of wildlife and birds. At dusk, the neighbouring field had bats, which were beautiful to watch.
In the kitchen there is a microwave, toaster, kettle, large and small sinks, hot water, and bins for food waste and recycling. There is also a fridge to use. All of these were clean and the place was very tidy.
I like small sites, so this was just perfect for us. There are lots of walks through the hills and the owners provide printed sheets suggesting lots of paths to take, each with timing, distance and difficulty on.
This is a beautiful little campsite for absolute peace and quiet, apart from the occasional wildlife noises. We absolutely loved it and would definitely go back.

Used this site as a one-night stopover on a backpacking trip with our two young daughters. Agree with most of what has been said - warm welcome, cup of tea much appreciated.
Lovely location, quiet, pleasant walk to The Bull in Foolow (alternative is the Queen Anne up in Great Hucklow). Toilet beautifully kept (not often you get pot pourri in a campsite lavvie!). Shelter was very useful for cooking in - especially if it had been raining. Cooking shed was well equipped.
However , when it came to time to pay I have to say I felt that £13 per night for just my wife and I and two small kids in a small hike tent was a bit on the steep side for a site of this type and size with no showers available and no EHU used
Derbyshire Hills is providing a lovely facility in this area of the National Park, but I feel they need to be more realistic as regards pricing.

We stayed at this site for two nights in fantastic weather. As detailed in previous reviews, the site is small, but perfectly formed.
The facilities are spot on - there is a large shed with a microwave, kettle, fridge and a toaster. There is also the sink in the shed for washing up.
There is only one toilet with a large sink - it is only a normal size household downstairs loo but it is fine for a weekend. There are plenty of walks detailed in the porch and you can take a copy of any of the walks.
The owners are very friendly and yes, you do get a cup of tea whilst you're setting up. The views are amazing, friendly ponies live next door and you can walk for miles in any direction in beautiful countryside.

We were the only ones on the site for the two nights we spent. An absolutely brilliant place to stay and I will be going back. We stayed at the back behind the barn and the views were spectacular. It's not a big site but that's the appeal. The owners appear to have used the back garden as the site, but what a back garden it is!
As with all the other reviews, the facilities are more than adequate for the adventurer. The kitchen area was very clean and tidy with microwave, kettle, fridge and washing up facilities. We stayed on the site and my son played with the dog and even got a ride on the tractor! They are very friendly and yes, we also got a good welcome and a cup of tea.
There are a couple of local pubs in the area, nice drinking and even better eating. Try the Lamb! It's locally sourced and, although a little expensive, you will see why when you taste it.
There are a lot of good and challenging walks in the area with some of them printed out for you to help yourself, located in the conservatory. This is a little tourist information centre next to the toilet and does have some useful info.
I don't think we could have stayed longer because of the lack of shower facilities, the only, and I mean only criticism. If this is work in progress then I look forward to longer stays.
If you are one for electric hook up, full mod cons, etc, this doesn't have it, perhaps you should stick to caravanning. If however, you want to visit one of the crown jewels in the heart of Derbyshire, then this is definitely the site for you. Why we were alone I do not know!
