 Lovely little laid back site for those of us who don't want lots of facilities. The site is along a river bank and there is plenty of free firewood with stone circles all along for fires. When we went there was a pile of wood by the entrance which I think the owner had piled up for campers. I hope so anyway, because otherwise we must have been pilfering another campers stash all weekend. If you need more wood, just cross the river and walk along the field til you come to a gate into the woods and collect your own.
The toilets are next door in a car park and are run by National Trust, but are open 24hrs. There is no tap on field but the owners are happy to fill water butts from the tap outside their guesthouse just down the road. We forgot teabags but we were able to borrow a pack to tide us over from the owners, until we got to a shop.
There is a little playpark next to toilets and a pub 300 yds down the road which does lovely food. There is also a rope swing over the river which our older two kids loved. Fishing is free on owners stretch of river but you need a rod licence. Lots of walks around Doone valley and a short drive to Lynton and Lynmouth. The kids had plenty of room to run about on this small but uncrowded site, and pets are allowed. We took our orphan lamb as we are bottle feeding her and cannot leave her at home and she had a great time too, running up and down the grass with kids. We paid twenty pounds for 2 adults, 4 kids and a sheep for 3 nights. Well worth it if you want simple camping pleasures like campfires, peace and space. All in all, we couldn't fault it.
