We camped at Meelmore Lodge for a weekend in June - two adults and two young children - and will never repeat the experience. The only thing this place has going for it is the view which is incredible. It is amazing to wake up to come out of the tent to wonderful views of the Mournes, but not quite so amazing when you've only had about 4 hours sleep due to the noise on the site.
We booked because this was marketed as a family site and the website stresses this along with a request for guests to be mindful of others. I don't know how what criteria they use for 'family', as a group of nine lads was camped near us - clearly no one had questioned them when they arrived. They shouted and sang til three in the morning, ruining any chance of getting much sleep. Approaching a group of very drunk young lads in the middle of the night to ask them to be quiet just wasn't an option.
We did complain to the staff in the coffee shop the next day that there had been no sign of anyone patrolling the place at night and they were very apologetic and said we should have rang the owner, regardless of the hour. They assured us it wouldn't happen again - and indeed the next night another group were asked to leave the site in the wee small hours for making ridiculous noise. A fellow camper had rang the owner after he got fed up with the noise and the owner came along and evicted the offending party. Again, however, this group was clearly no family.
Facilities:
Very inadequate for such a large site (which is essentially two large fields, one on a considerable slope). For ladies, two ladies toilets, two unisex portacabins, two showers (only one of which was working). No plugs for hairdriers or any other appliances. For washing dishes, an almost insulting outside sink with a cold water. No other water taps on the site. No laundry facilities. The whole place could also do with a good clean and a job lot of disinfectant. The place also needs a lot more bins - there is rubbish everywhere. There is only one rubbish area near the coffee shop, no others dispersed among the camping area as you find on other sites and the bins here were overflowing so rubbish had been dumped beside the bins so was spilled all over the ground.
Coffee shop:
The coffee shop is the redeeming factor of this place. Its open good hours and serves decent food at very reasonable prices.
The location:
The location of this site cannot be beat. Its right in the Mournes and a lane running along the site of the site takes you straight into the mountains. Really stunning place - if you can put up with the many many downsides of this campsite.
Overall, it is a real pity that this site doesn't have a little cash and a lot of TLC spent on it - it is in an amazing setting but is a noisy party site, markets itself misleadingly on its site, and needs an overhaul of facilities. Shame really.

The main attraction for this site is the view. Any failings the site has are forgotten when you wake up yards from the beauty of the Mourne Mountains. The site has it's own access to the mountain paths, and Hare's Gap which is in full view opposite is less than an hours walk away. For those attracted by hiking, this place will be paradise. The site advertises as tents only, and familys only. Neither of these are strictly true:- caravans and motorhomes can stay for an overnight (or 2), and there were numerous groups of teens and lads while we were there, which was admittedly over a Bank Holiday. There are also Duke Of Edinburgh campers on expeditions, which is who the site was created for in the first place. Pitches - There is a small DoE field beside the toilet block, then behind a wall heading towards the mountains there is a large, sloping field for families. At the far end of this field is another small field which is mostly for overflow, as it is a long, uphill walk to the toilets. There are no laid out pitches, and certainly no 6m rule - pitch where you can is the rule. The fields are just that - fields. Don't expect any landscaping or roads. Toilets & Showers - Hopelessly inadequate. 3 ladies toilets (or so I'm told), 1 gents, 2 unisex portaloos and 2 showers. There were 100+ tents when we stayed here. More toilet facilities are planned, though it seems this is years away rather than imminent. The toilets were clean enough, though with so many campers it was an impossible job to stay on top of the cleaning. More than once the gents ran out of loo paper ! Campers Facilities - Almost non existent - 2 dirty sinks with cold water. Cafe - Excellent. Small, but cheap and friendly and serving nice (though basic) hot food. In high season stays open later (9pm or so) to serve coffee and excellent hot chocolate. EHU - There are no EHU at the moment, although some are planned. Campfires - The owner comes round in the evening on a quad bike selling blocks of peat to be used as campfires. Most people lit these on old disposable BBQs, though some seemed to be directly on the grass - the owner didn't seem to mind. Dogs - Dogs are let run free without any interferance by the owner. I had to chase a dog from the back of our tent at regular intervals. The main field however is so large this isn't the huge problem it may be otherwise. Playground - There is a very small playground and trampoline in the DoE field. Noise - I can only comment for the weekend we stayed, but this is an extremely noisy site. The owner (who lives maybe 0.5 mile away) does patrol regularly, even in the wee hours. However this seems to be more of a damage limitation exercise rather than an attempt to stamp out unsociable noise. We were victims of lots of late night shouting by various groups, teens on the trampoline at 3am, and torches shining on the tent walls to the small hours by people looking for the gap in the wall to the toilet. Bring earplugs !

A little gem of a campsite (and hostel) nestling in the foothills of the Mourne Mountains in an area of truly outstanding natural beauty. We (2 adults, 2 children) decided to stay here knowing very little about the site, we would more usually have stayed in Tollymore just up the road. When we arrived we were greeted warmly and directed through a gate and told to pick our spot. We found ourselves in an empty field and really could pick our perfect location. This site is used alot by groups such as Duke of Edinburgh/Scouts/BB but the campsite is divided up into different fields and these groups are kept separate from the "family" groups. I should add a few more people arrived in "our" field the next day but it was never busy or crowded. The facilities are basic, there is a small toilet block (spotlessly clean) with 2 showers (£1 token), a cold water outdoor dish-washing area and a small cafe.(take-away available at peak times) All wheel chair accessible. I imagine at busy times these would be stretched to the limit but there are plans afoot for a new toilet block and also for some hard standing for caravans with EHU-not currently available. There is no play park for children but there is all the space to run around that they could possibly want or need. The bustling coastal town of Newcastle is just a few miles away and has all the usual seaside attractions — amusements, restaurants and takeaways, a boating lake, a bowling green and golf course, harbour, parkland and promenade. It also has many pubs. We paid £4 per adult and £2.50 per child (over 4) to stay in this site at the end of June. If you want a site with play areas, entertainment, shops and pubs this is not the place for you however if you want peace and quiet, stunning views and a bit of exercise and are content with more basic facilities then this place is perfect. We had a wonderful time.
