Well what a location for this site, excellent for ferries, the Normandy beaches, and many more. Unfortunately that's were it finishes.

For £35 a night approx I thought it would be top site. How wrong can one be?

To enter the site through the Barrier can be quite hair-raising as you have to cross sides ie the French drive on the right, but you enter on the left and its the same coming out. The Barrier is located down a short drive and is located on a blind bend, so you just hope no one is coming out or in, in the opposite direction to you.

The swimming pool is excellent if you have the right swim gear (Only Speedo), otherwise you are invited to leave.

When we got to our pitch we were disappointed by the toilet facilities. They were basic - in a sort of open style terrapin building. The waste pipes gushed all over the floor when you flushed the loo. No toilet seats. The worst aspect was that there was only 1 tap - which was for hand washing, dish washing, clothes washing! Not hygienic at all. We even witnessed the cleaning of the toilets. Grab a hose, jet the toilet from distance, then just squeegee the floor. JOB DONE! No wonder the toilet paper is always wet. Take your own. Be warned,

Don't think we will be going there again, and I have also contacted and informed the Camping and Caravan Club about this site as it is in their summer camping 2010 book.

Stayed here for 3 nights on our way back from a lovely site further south - but, we wanted to be nearer to the port of Caen for our return sailing home.

The site was quite busy. We have a twin axle caravan and found it quite tight manoeuvring the caravan into our pitch. We were on the stretch facing the canal - it was dusty. Couldn't leave wet towels out dry because when any cars came past the dust sprayed up and covered them.

The pool was busy and in the time we were there we didn't see any pool attendants on, there were groups of teenagers getting very boisterous in the pool (not really doing any harm, but when you have young children it is a little frightening for them and means they are unable to go off on their own).

The children's play area was fair, but we found that when we were there it was taken up by young teenagers who congregated in large groups.

The toilet blocks were average - no toilet seats and no loo roll provided in the shower blocks near our pitch.

The evening entertainment centred around a plastic awning type construction on the side of the pool/reception area. We didn't actually go to this but saw it in the daytime and it was littered with spilt drinks/rubbish wrappers etc.

This site is excellent for proximity/easy access to the port of Caen, but other than that, I cannot think of a single reason why I would recommend it. Not for us I'm afraid.

We've used this site on numerous occasions as an overnight stopover prior to or after using the ferry at Oiustreham. Nothing more than this.

All I would say is that when we found ourselves in a bit of a predicament during our journey home this year, the site receptionist and manager were extremely helpful and kind to us.

I have promised not to be any more specific than this but suffice to say we were extremely glad to be able to stay there. However as the site is so basic, it is not somewhere we would consider for a lengthy stay.

We used this site for 2 nights on our way back to the UK after 6 weeks spent touring round France. We felt it compared poorly with other French campsites, except for 2 things: firstly, the new swimming pool complex was superb, and having an indoor section was very useful as the weather was cold and wet during our brief stay; and the location was extremely convenient for the ferry, and also for the D-Day beaches and Pegasus Bridge. No doubt this is why the site is so expensive, at around 30 euros a night the dearest we had come across.
We didn't use the bar or restaurant but noticed they were open all day, which is useful. The shop was very poor so we used a local supermarket. The toilet block was fine - the loos were segregated by sex, but not the showers or washbasins, but this is pretty standard in France, as is the lack of loo seats. (The French have some eccentric views on hygiene - they think 'hole in the ground' type toilets are more hygienic, but if they have sit-on ones they prefer them with no seats, again for reasons of hygiene.
They also believe that swimming shorts are unhygienic and in many swimming pools men have to wear speedo-type trunks.
So to sum up - we would use the site again because of its convenient location for overnight stopovers, but not for longer stays.

Stopped here for an overnight stop after arriving on the Caen ferry. Had prebooked via the C&CC.

Friendly welcome at Reception then told to go and find our own pitch. Pitches medium sized - adequate for a 4 berth tourer but would be cramped with the awning up. All the pitches had a concrete kerb that had to be bumped over with the 'van when reversing on.

Toilets were not particularly clean although were modern. No toilet seats.

No fresh milk or bread unless you prebook - so no use to ferry arrivals at night!

The site was a welcome stop-over after the ferry crossing, however not somewhere we would spend any length of time, especially at the price per night.

On arrival had a very friendly welcome from girl on reception but the pitch they allocated us was far too small and very sloping. When I stated I had booked a large pitch with awning, we were then moved to a very large pitch in amongst residential statics which did feel a bit odd but nevertheless was better.

The new pool was fantastic the kids loved it, toilets and shower blocks were ok but could be better! There's a small shop selling essentials, bar and restaurant by the pool but found the food quite pricey and nothing special! Nice walk along the canal (don't forget your code to get back in the gates) to the Pegasus Bridge cafes and museum. Personally we didn't like cafe gondre found the staff very miserable go to the one opposite, staff much more friendly and nice meals but a bit of a wasp problem became very annoying.

Ideal location for visiting the D-Day landing beaches, port of Caen very close by but we did Dover to Calais and drove down thinking we would save a fortune but because of the price of the diesel last year we didn't really save that much plus you've got the motorway tolls!

Ouistreham is quite a nice town with a stunning Beach and within walking distance if you enjoy a long walk, better to cycle really!

Overall the pool is stunning with the added extra of a cover over part of it so if it rains you can stay in the pool and keep warm. Don't know if we would go there again, maybe in the future but not in a rush to.

Just returned from a 4 night stay here, which we used as a base to see some of the Normandy landing sites.

I have mixed feelings about this site. The positive first - it is obvious they have spent thousands on a fabulous new pool with slides. Our kids adored it, and the wonderful new play area too. The site is spacious and pitches large - we were given free rein to choose any one we wanted that was available.

However, the site badly lets itself down in more basic areas. There isn't a toilet anywhere on site with a toilet seat. Toilet paper was provided outside the block we used, but was empty on the last day. The showers were very basic, with nowhere dry to hang your towel or clothes - and on 3 out of 4 mornings I showered, there was a used sanitary towel on the floor of the shower block - which I realise says as much about those using the site as it does those running it.

The sink area we used for washing up was permanently flooded, and didn't provide a plug - although a sign cautioned users to 'save water' (how?). In the other area where sinks were available, people were also able to empty their chemical toilets!

The site backs onto a superb cycle and walking path, which means you can safely travel to Ouistreham or Caen along the canal.

The Pegasus Bridge and museum could scarcely by closer, while Sword beach is within cycling distance. Recommend Bayeuex for a day out, and the Peace Museum at Caen.

Having just stayed for a week on the basis of using it for WW2 related visit and reliably informed.

The toilets had no seats and no loo paper!(pretty disgusting), showers were initially cold and where unisex (both Male and Female sharing).

The new pool was finished looks very impressive, never used it due to it being full all the time.

Tent pitch was great had loads of room and easy to park up.

This campsite is superbly placed for Pegasus Bridge and the Memorial Museum (a gate from the site leads directly out onto the canal path about 500m away from the bridge)

The bar and restaurant are bright and modern although the food was nothing special (microwave meals).

Meal at campsite costing around 20 euro for a extra 10 euro you could go to les 3 planeurs which is at the end of the canal path.

I would not visit here again.

Having just stayed for a week on the basis of using it for WW2 related visit and reliably informed [from the site] all was open from 1st april, nothing was open, even the reception was like trying to catch a hot potato!
As mentioned no loo seats and no loo paper!, showers were initially cold then boiling on days 2 and 3 then packed up altogether! The new pool was in the final stages of being finished and looks very impressive.
The site was clean and tidy, general overview was that given it was very early in the year and there were a good few motorhomes coming and going with 2 - 3 days stopovers and ongoing work to road surfaces within the site, it looked as though when all things were complete it could be a good place to stay for short term stops, like 2 - 3 days and then move on. Would go back on that basis but not for a long stay
As regards to the comments from johnnyb08 about Arlette in the Gonderee cafe at Pegasus Bridge, couldnt disagree more, The other half found her most obliging and helpful and very gracious in her manner so much so that she even 'autographed' a post card she purchased 'with pleasure' was the comment,

Stayed overnight before catching the ferry home. Very convenient for Ouistreham, completely took the hassle out of travelling back to catch the ferry. A couple of hypermarkets about 1 min drive away for all that French booty you will want to bring back too!

We got to the campsite mid afternoon, parked up on the designated overnight ferry pitch, loads of room and easy to park up.

Overall the site appeared a little tatty, I visited a couple of sets of toilet blocks which were in a pretty disgusting condition, these need to be sorted out.

Didn't really get a chance to use other facilities, but they looked a bit tatty. I understand there are plans to improve for 2008, an indoor pool is on the cards, let's hope they give the place a facelift at the same time.

The newly installed toilets and showers for the ferry catchers are fine however, although of a sort of Portakabin type construction and a little exposed to the elements, they were clean and tidy. Showers were nice and hot.

This campsite is superbly placed for Pegasus Bridge and the Memorial Museum (a gate from the site leads directly out onto the canal path about 500m away from the bridge)and even if you're not army barmy like my sons and I, you will still get an awful lot out of a visit. The story of the capture and the guide who relates it are absolutely captivating and there are loads of interesting exhibits and bits of WW2 hardware. Even my wife helped us re-enact the capture of the bridge! The cafe Gondree is still owned and run by the daughter of the owners liberated by the Brits on the night before D-Day. She is delightfully French and snooty!

We are going back at the start of this year's holiday to finish the D-Day stuff and hopefully take a bike ride along the canal up to Merville (more WW2 stuff I'm afraid), we can put up with a bit of tattiness for a couple of nights due to the convenience and location.

Can't say fairer than that
