To say that this site is 'basic' is to do it an injustice - primitive might be a better word to use.
One Portaloo for the site for when the Pub is closed is, quite frankly, not good enough: Thank goodness that with a motorhome we had our own facilities.
The 'shower' would be amusing if it was in a 'Carry On' film. It consisted of a cold water pipe running into a colander. Needless to say, I didn't see anyone using it.
The washing up facilities, again, were cold water only.
The rubbish bins were not bins with lids but open blue drums; no doubt, appreciated by the local rats.
The field itself is grass and seems to hold water pretty well. If it has been raining be careful how you go to drive off as you may well get stuck. This comment would apply to any grass field.
The only thing that is in this site's favour is that it based on a Pub. If you want to drink, you can then go back to your tent, caravan or motorhome and sleep it off.
The Pub itself was very nice inside and seemed the sort of place that I would have enjoyed to have had a meal. I didn't bother after having paid my campsite fees. The reason was the usual lack of customer service that one seems to encounter with a lot of sites: To say that the service was off-hand would be unfair but disinterested would be spot on the money.
The fees were, I felt, rather high for what was on offer: £8 per night plus a further £2 per person was, in my opinion, very poor value. I have used other sites that have cost less and offered more. This is why I have given this site and overall rating of 3/10

This campsite is quite nice and relaxed - as already written about, very basic facilities, but lots of space and the children loved running around the field.
The pub toilets weren't too bad when they were open (just a shame they weren't open 24 hours) and the food in the pub was very tasty, it was lovely in the evening having a camp fire (the pub provides what you need, just need to buy wood which you can get from them).
The main thing which really ruined it for us was the field seemed to literally be infested by wasps! literally hundreds / thousands of them just buzzing around happily landing on us (with a few of us getting stung as well), even more so with any food or drinks around.
All we managed to put it down to is the fact that they grow 'prize winning' cooking apples there and the wasps are attracted to them. Hence, we managed to stay only 1 night instead of 2. Without the wasps it would have been a really nice but basic stay.

Have just returned from a visit to Buckland Bell with myself and 2 children aged 9 and 6. Agree with all previous comments re it being a really lovely flat field, great atmosphere, lovely landlord and landlady (had a beautiful meal in the pub), not many rules - pitch up the best free space available, be quiet after midnight
Great to have a fire, etc. Yes, the facilities are extremely basic, but you know this before you go if you've checked it out. Heard the cockerel early in the morning, but wasn't really a great disturbance as he was at the top of the field (where the chickens tend to stay) and we were at the bottom. Cows, birds, not to much a of a disturbance really (and I'm a very light sleeper!). None of these things woke the children.
However! We would've loved to have stayed a second night, but were literally driven out of the place by wasps. There are thousands of them. At any given moment you will have about 5 around our head and it is impossible to cook or eat outside, and you have to secure your tent all the time. So, unfortunately it wasn't the great British weather that cut short our trip (it was sunny and dry), but the wasps! What a shame

This is a friendly site, little or no facilities. There is a chem loo on site for 24 hour use and access to the Pub bathroom while it is open. This would however be the only drawback.
The owners are relaxed and friendly, the pub is very nice. One of the high points is being able to have an open fire (in a fire pit) but more than you get from most others. If you are looking for a relaxed site and you are not worried about showering (ok you can go to the local swimming baths) then this is a very good well priced site.
Oh ye. Then there are the chickens, we loved them wandering around and the fact that the cockerels started there thing at 5:30am did not worry us, in fact it was another highlight of our stay.

Well if you're looking for a site with a fire pit this is it- not many in Somerset, but to me back to basic camping is such fun. This site is basic; if you like the manicured, locked gate, constantly being checked up on this is not for you. Relaxed and friendly with a cool pub on site- what more do you need? they even sell a bag of logs for the fire.
Toilets in pub- open 24 hours.
Shower- very bush tucker!( rating based on back to basic facilities)
Will definitely go back.

Loads of space as there was about 12 units and all parked around the outside of the field which left space for the children (and adults) to play their games. Being able to have a fire in the evening was great - toasting marshmallows!
A very laid back atmosphere, chickens wandering around, one downside is the cockerel at 5.15am but by the second morning it was the norm. The landlord is a lovely bloke - would recommend.

I can highly recommend this site for very back to nature camping, the owners of the Bell Inn certainly knew what they were doing when creating this camp site
The atmosphere is electric with everyone mucking in and being friendly, songs and camp fires are the normal at this site where as unusually found anywhere else
General facilities are very basic but that's what makes this place so special (the swimming baths in Frome do however help with basic hygiene.) The Cockerels are a different matter and nearly went in the pot at one stage due to too earlier call in the mornings, however I did resist the urge & if you have no problem with being awoken @ 0530 in the morning by the trill of Cockerels then I am sure you will have a great time.
Food in the Bell is excellent, the menu may appear a little expensive however by the time you seek out alternative eateries you might as well have stayed put and enjoyed a few beers & not driven anywhere. I have never felt so welcome as I did there & I will certainly be visiting again this year and many years to come.

Just returned from a glorious weekend. The Bell at Buckland Dinham was our base on the first night and having read the reviews, and speaking to the landlord, we were aware of the shortcomings of the site. The beauty of camping in September is that for the last few years we have enjoyed good weather and the children were back in school!
We were the only people on the site, which suited us. The field was large and well cared for (short grass) We were met, after booking in, by a clutch of inquisitive chickens and ducks who were very helpful in setting up our tents.
Outside facilities are very basic but you should expect this when camping. The portaloo was there for emergency use as the pub toilets were available during opening hours. Washing facilities were also available, cold water only, as was the 'shower' very invigorating at 0800 but a great laugh.
We do not have young children but the pond in the corner may concern todays parents but when we brought up our children we looked after them and taught them about those dangers.
Having not been camping for so long I can not comment on the pricing of the pitches.
The pub was very welcoming and cosy and we enjoyed several hours there before retiring.
Not having been camping since the 60's (Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, Dartmoor) I was amazed at how easily I slipped back into the old routine.
All in all a great experience and reintroduction to the delights of being under canvas.
We will definitely be visiting this site again.
Many thanks to the landlady, we did not meet the landlord, and staff for making our short stay so enjoyable.

We had people talking and singing until the early morning, we had two young children age 6 and 3 who had very disturbed nights. Personally can cope with the country sounds ie Cockerel at 4.30 ish and cows, but bad mannered campers is another matter. Cost was £16 per night for 2 adults and 2 children, thought it was expensive for facilities, ie, 1 cold running water tap, 1 portaloo, you could use the pub toilets when the pub was open. (ps. Also a large deep unfenced pond in corner of field)

This is a lovely quiet site. Right next door to a traditional village pub.
The site is off a village road with minimal night time noise.
On waking you can hear cows in a neighbouring field & church bells. There are free range ducks & chickens clucking around the field which my young boys enjoyed feeding bread.
The field was practically empty so lots of space to run & play with out being on top of each other.
The landlord opens the back door of the pub so you can use the toilet facilities at 8:30am til 12pm. They are spotless. After 12 there is a porta loo in the campsite which wasn't very clean.
The washing facilities consist of a out door, cold water shower which is very rustic & perhaps not for the faint of heart. For washing up - again it it a rustic shelter with a cold water tap in a huge sink.
