Nice sized campsite, not too big or too small. We spent three nights then came back for another four nights in a four person tent. Most of the people on the site were in camper vans and caravans with a good mix of French, English, Dutch and German visitors. The site is divided into sections each with six hedged emplacements with a choice of 5 or 10 amp electricity. The pitches were a good size (approx 100m2), plenty big enough for the tent and room for table and chairs. There are also chalets available for hire. The site has two wash blocks with good hot showers, toilets with no toilet seats and the loo paper on the outside!
There is pot washing and clothes washing facilities with hot water as well as a coin operated automatic washer and drier. There is a bar where you can get your bread and croissants in the morning and pizzas, chips and snacks. There is also a small playground for the kids, table tennis and table football. You can also hire bikes for ten euros a day. There is free Wi-fi which covers half the campsite.
Within walking distance there is a Coop shop and a rather nice restaurant. The sea is 10-15 mins walk away with a stoney beach and a little harbour, with a nice view of the bridge over to the Ile-de-Re. There is a really good restaurant there were we had the best meal of our holiday - 13 euros for the menu of the day! There was also another restaurant and a creperie near by that we didn't get to try.
We would recommend this campsite as it's not too expensive (74 euro 3 nights high season and 77 euros 4 nights low season). It's nicely located near to La Rochelle and the Ile-de-Re (16. 50 euros to get over the bridge mind) and it's quiet, if you don't mind the birds tweeting!

We loved this site as it is very French, the couple who run it are very friendly as are the rest of the staff. The site is quite basic but the toilets and showers are very clean and the water was always hot. There is free wifi on the site but it doesn't cover the whole site you either need to be quite close to reception or pop down and sit there with your laptop. The food on site was ok and there is no shop on site but they do sell bread and croissants in the morning. There is a large supermarket 1 mile away or a huge one in La Rochelle. The electrics were fine but you need an adaptor and some pitches needed to use two leads as the electric points were a long way from some pitches. We found this site to be very good value for money and is located in a really nice place. We would highly recommend staying here.

This was the first time we have camped in France after 5yrs in England, We found driving easy and would recommend it.
The site was good and as described quite basic with small bar but food was ok, toilets were cleaned regularly shower temp was good, electrics worked but did look dodgy.
We hired bikes and had great time on cycle tracks but 4.5km seems a lot further on bike than in a car when going to la rochelle.
Local bakery was great also small store and local restaurant all in 2 min walk, big supermarket 2min drive.
Main road at back of site was noisy but not that bad.
We will most likely go back next year

A very French, old fashioned, pack them in site. A mixture of chalets and tourers. The electric hookups looked dodgy with double adaptors being used, but worked alright.
The toilets, which were a mixture of old and modern, were clean and tidy. Showers were good, free and adjustable. Rubbish and recycle bins are outside the entrance.
Small bar on site, but didn't try it. Baguettes can be ordered for next morning.
Staff extremely friendly and helpful.
L'Houmeau like so many small French villages is very neat and tidy. Three minutes walk to the centre. Complete with Baker, Hairdresser, Newspaper shop and Post Office.
Less than a kilometre to the coast and small fishing harbour of Port du Plomb and pebble beach.
Complimentary maps from reception of local cycle paths put to good use on the nearby Ile de Re. The only hill being the bridge to the island which is toll to motor vehicles.
The centre of La Rochelle is only 4 km away.
No other GB plates spotted on site.
