Just had another visit, one night over the bank holiday. Hardly anyone there. Bliss. Just turned up and was made most welcome. Parked up in the main field. Full of Mother sheep and their baby lambs, lovely to wake up with the van surrounded by them and to watch them running around and playing.
Whitmore Lea is the most uncomplicated, natural campsite I know, and so we keep returning. Best to stay just for a night or two as the facilities are simple.
Two toilets with toilet roll. Taps for cold water. That's it. But you are free from pitches, space from others and are in the basin of Edale which is beautiful with a stream running through.
You can walk the 20mins from the site through the fields to the village of Edale and the two pubs and train station, so perfect for those arriving via train too.
If you are nearby and can highly recommend that you just turn up for a night or two. I think that £3 a night each, plus little extra for the van is a great deal for such a secluded, natural spot. We'll be back.

I took my wife on her first camping trip on this Easter weekend to Whitmore Lea Farm. She loved it.
We first tried to get in at two sites actually in Edale which were full then also the first farm campsite that we came to was also full - but thankfully! The scenery around this site was fantastic.
The price was £6 for our one night. Bargain. There was ample space in the top field that we were in. I'd like to get nearer the river next time though as it looked very nice and a little more sheltered. If you enjoy good, honest and basic camping then this is for you. The facilities are non (just a couple of clean toilets and a water outlet or two). But who needs facilities when you've got your camping gear? We plan to go back with our two children soon as we know that they will love it.
The steady 20 min walk to the pub was very nice also.
I'd probably not recommend this site for any more that 2 or 3 nights as it has no showers but can simply say the site is super and it's surroundings are breathtaking.

2 Adults - 3 Kids
We ended up here because it was August Bank Holiday and all the other sites were fully booked (despite all the websites saying that you couldn't book ahead and just turn up)
This site is very basic with only a tap in the field and 2 toilets by the farm house - a longish walk from the tents. The loos were very clean and regularly topped up with loo paper.
It gives you the chance to get away from domestic life, but with the luxury of a tap and loo!
Well placed for the walk to Jacobs Ladder and beyond.
Large spacious field but as mentioned by others it is used for sheep. We had a folding shovel and used it to scoop up the sheep droppings around our tents which really helped (I knew I bought that shovel for a reason !)
I would advise wellies or walking boots on this site due to sheep droppings, big puddles on the track and longish (wet) grass.
The kids loved the wildness of the site and the stream provided a good distraction.
We loved it here and will definitely be going back.

It was a busy bank holiday weekend, very windy and wet, but great fun. BBQ and beer, what a great site, very basic with just the famous tap and two toilets.
If only the owners would have a QUIET rule and enforce it! it was barmy that ignorant fools were playing music and running around like loonies until the small hours. We mentioned this to the owners and the 2nd night was better.
If the facilities were better this site would be ruined as it would get very busy and the fun of camping in the wild would be lost. Great place as my iphone won't work. Peace and quiet!

Arrived late friday night after getting a little lost but the owner gave great direction when we called her to say we were lost. Met by the owner who was very nice.
Beautiful views, very basic site but well worth the £3 a night. Water tap at the bottom of the field and near the main house. 2 toilets kept very clean. Owner made us aware there were no showers but as only there a few days was not an issue.
The sheep in the field we fine did not bother us at all. There is a large hill at the top of the site to walk up its further than you think so take a drink and good walking boots.
We had an amazing few days and although there we no fire signs there were a few off the floor fire on the go.
I cant wait to go back just wish it was better sign posted - don't rely on a sat nav print off a map as your sat nav will tell you your at your destination in the middle on nowhere! If you driving a car that is low to the ground you may struggle on the field as the track to follow is a little high in the middle but I just drove a little off set and was fine.
Give it a try

I stayed at this site with my 12-year old son and it was at one and the same time both the best and worst of stays I have ever had on a campsite!
We booked in on the Friday evening and were directed over the railway bridge to the main camping field (by the way it's a good idea to take an OS map and google earth the site because it is off the public road and between a few houses before you arrive at the farm). The main camping field was huge and dissected by a track. You could choose to go down by the river or camp in the upper half of the field. We decided to go up and over into the far corner - the field slopes but there are plenty of flatter parts to pitch on.
There is a tap in the field - that's it. The field had had sheep in it, the grass was long and you needed to take care where you trod. That is why I rate it low on child friendly - if they do get messed up there's no easy way to get them clean again.
There were obviously a number of groups, one of which was particularly big. What spoilt our stay was music blaring out until until gone 1 am. Culminating with an impromptu fireworks display at 1.30 am. When that group quietened down someone struck up on a bongo drum and kept that up until well past 2.30 am.
The next night was quieter because the really noisy lot had gone but ironically we found ourselves listening to the duff-duff-duff of music coming from the next pitch 20 metres away. I conclude that there is just so much space that some people wrongly assume they can play their car stereos and are far enough away for others not to hear it (or perhaps they just don't care).
All of this was a real pity because the location was perfect and the views stunning. It was also right on a path to go up Jacob's Ladder and the footpath back from the pub in Edale was delightful (I wouldn't like to try and find the path across the fields at night if I hadn't first done it during the day).
I stopped counting tents after counting 45 on both nights we were there so the '20 pitches' is a joke but nevertheless the two toilets were clean and we didn't have to queue either, so you can work out for yourself where a lot of people were going rather than take the long walk, although at least one group had the foresight to take a loo tent.
Bottom line - back to basics in a beautiful location, very cheap (£3 per person per night) but it is obviously popular with groups and can be noisy. Perhaps we were just unlucky with a really noisy night but sad to say I shall not return to find out.

What a lovely campsite! We booked for two nights due to the lack of showers and then moved elsewhere.
If you don't mind basic facilities, then it really is a lovely spot. We had plenty of room.
The signs said 'no fires' though actually they were quite happy with off-ground bbqs.
We'd definitely come back here - really beautiful and a bargain price too (we paid £3 per person and our 3 year old was free).

The Whitmore Lea Farm is the closest thing to authentic camping that I have found in the Peak District after extensive searches. The area is wild, diverse, large enough to feel somewhat secluded and surrounded on all sides by stunning views of the Edale Valley. Sure, it is great to have a hot shower at a campsite (something Whitmore does not boast), but not at the cost of being crammed into rectangular field, filled with cars, caravans and tents all packed in like sardines. If hot showers are a prerequisite, there are plenty of 'campsites' (read caravan parking lots) for you to cram your tent into, so please avoid Whitmore Lea).
After driving up and down the Valley, stopping at the most highly recommended sites, from Upper Booth to Rowter Farms, this place was far and away the most picturesque, secluded and beautiful spot. No question. We found a perfect spot in the far corner of the field, next to a lovely stream, and could not believe our luck at finding such a vastly superior campsite.
I would highly recommend the Whitmore Lea campsite to anyone who is sick and tired of the average English tent/caravan site, and is truly looking for an authentic outdoor experience in the Peak District.

We camped here with a small group including 2 toddlers. The scenery is stunning, and its a very natural campsite. This can be good and bad depending on what you are looking for! We camped in the big field, furthest away. It does not seem to be regulated so our dog was off the lead and nobody seemed to mind though he was well behaved, and kids run around to their hearts content. However, there were a couple of party groups making noise well into the night but the field was so big this did not bother us too much. You can pitch in a corner well away from others if you like, however, the further away you pitch the further it is to the toilet! From the far field it is a long walk! People were therefore improvising, so it depends how you feel about that. There were also lots of sheep in the field, checking out the tents, and making their presence felt at 6am or by what was hard to avoid stepping in! There were 2 fields closer to the toilet which didn't have sheep, but one was less scenic and the other we didn't realise you could camp on until later in the weekend when a couple of others did. I don't know how you get to camp there but would recommend it. The facilities are very basic (2 toilets & 2 outside cold water taps) but the toilets were clean enough and it was ridiculously cheap so seemed an absolute bargain. I would not go back, as I missed hot running water to wash the kids hands particularly with sheep poo about, and the long walk to the loo was a bit much, but could be improved by camping closer, but for those who want to get away from it all entirely I would recommend it.

We've just been again. This time stayed in the big field. Plenty of room for our group of 3 vans and two big tents to be together, but with lots of space between the next group. Complete rural idyll. Messing about in the river, lazy in the hazy sun. Toilets felts miles away, but apart from that - perfect camping.
