We stayed at camping bel after a recommendation on the ukcampsite and it was everything we asked for.
After coming from a rural site we were shocked by how cramped the pitches were and how claustrophobic the entire campsite felt. We have a vermont L tent and it just fitted and no more - we certainly could not sit outside in the evening and relax.
The internal roads are very busy with kids on their bikes, which took a bit of getting used to until our children joined in and then it was a great plus for the site!
The toilet block and cleaning facilities were spotless, but the pool was cold. The children's cinema is a great idea and settled them down for a nights sleep.
The site is in a great location, close to the beach and within walking distance to Super U.
I can see why some people hate the breadman arriving in the morning but we loved it.
We are considering staying again next year as the children loved it but a bigger pitch would be nice, as it would feel a bit more 'open'.

This was the 5th trip to Bel in 7 years ( so obviously a fan and this review may be tainted by that)
3 boys aged 14 down to 8 always gone in Eurocamp tent
Location great for walking or cycling to town or town beach with kids, promenade with cycling lanes makes it easy for pushchairs, toddlers and just starting out bike riders.
Town beach good for kids ( sandy, south facing, shallow, good toilets etc) if a bit seaweed covered, you may be lucky and see the hermit crabs at very low tides which my kids loved.
For more adventurous beaches with a drive ( 10 mins) or cycle (30 mins) round the corner on the west facing coasts ( lots of beaches with various levels or facilities and various
Busyness all the way up to Jard sur mer and Les sables)
Town good and very pedestrian friendly with a good selection of bars, restaurants etc.
Site itself is on the small side 50:50 euro/keycamp and ' Free rangers' as my son calls them,
Pitches on the sandy side ( not surprisingly ),
Toilets/showers and washing up always being cleaned
Each pitch has a tap and a hook up
Very small bar with resonable prices on drink and ice-cream ( that shuts at 22. 30 when entertainment finishes)
Also sells very small selection of basics milk bread etc. If your desperate or arrive late on a Sunday.
And a take way that does chips and quiche ( that's about it, but being so close to town and the Super you it's not worth doing more)
Pool is always cold and can get busy ( with kids ) on hotter days, about 15 sun loungers put in in the last couple of years bolted to floor and again always busy on hotter days.
But space for towels and a load of benches around the edges
Three little kids play areas with ( 2 big 1 small) with the usual play equipment. 2 half tennis courts and a small basketball/football area always kid packed.
The Owners are great and are always available ( they are also pretty unobtrusive in that they you don't know they are there until you need something. Always a plus)
One small negatives or thing to remember is to park you car out of the way on your pitch, this is difficult on the main through routes as there are lots of kids, big and little on bikes, who may not be good riders. A recipe for bumps and scratches!
An acquired taste is the bread man I like him and his delicious if expensive bread and croissant and if you try your franglias on him he's fine, his bell though reminds me too much of school.
Finally as is the case on many spilt free range / glamping sites the euro/key camp reps. Can have a negative impact on the whole site if their relationship with the site owner is poor (or they decide they want to party themselves all the time) and this has been an issue in the past on Bel.
For 2012 the head reps for both companies are returning from last year and were excellent in 2011 and am expecting them to be good this year too.
Price wise I've been told it's expensive in comparison to other sites in the area but for us at the moment It is perfect.
I will be making my 6th trip in my vintage Royale this August and taking another family with us ( in eurocamp tent)
The only way I think to get across my impression of this site is that my wife says that the kids disappear and find new friends within the first 10 minutes and that she never worries about them when they are on site.

Camping Bel is a mixture of Keycamp/Eurocamp mobile homes/tents with around 30 pitches to use your own gear on. We booked with C&C club and can also book with Eurocamp Independent.
We were met by the site owner who enquired on the size of our tent and placed us on an appropriately sized pitch. We had loads of room for our Icarus 500 and canopy extension, our sons 2 man tent, room to leave our table and chairs set up, 3 camping chairs and car! Each emplacement had its own 10amp elecricity supply (had reverse polarity), water tap and grey waste point. The pitches were a mixture of grass and sand but mainly sandy.
The site was kept beautifully clean and the toilet/shower blocks were cleaned 4 times a day, never had to queue for either toilet or shower. The wash up area was also within the same block and again was kept lovely and clean.
There were many play areas for children with equipment for all ages and was well used by all the kids on site. The multi sport court was small and a larger grassed area would have been welcome for all the footballers. There was a well used tennis court and badminton court which was charged at 2 euro for half an hour. In the bar were some ancient gaming machines but the kids loved playin them! Also a pool table and Tv which nobody ever watched as they were so busy playing out! Favourite part was kids cinema night each evening at 8. 30. Lovely to see all the kids sat together sharing popcorn and sweets glued to the screen. End of the film signalled bed time for the majority of the kids. Not much for teens on site but for anyone with children under 12 was absolutely fabulous.
The small bar served a small range of food (sandwiches, fries and lasagne) all around 3 euro. Draft beer was 4euro for a pint and a bottle of localish Bordeaux was 7 euro. Saying that quite a few people took their own supplies and had no problem doing so. Only downside was that the bar closed at 10. 30 which we thought was a little to early.
The pool area was nice with a few sunbeds available, not really enough for the site and they were bolted to the floor! Plenty of benches to sit on and the best thing according to hubby was no strict rules around Speedos! Also kids allowed inflatables in the pool etc despite the sign saying not allowed. Small jacuzzi which was supposed to be for adults but mainly invaded with kids.
Super you was less than 5 minutes walk, very busy in the afternoon but well stocked. A bread man visited the site each morning but we were not all that impressed with his bread, much better from Super you or the Boulangerie in town. The beach was 5 minutes walk in the opposite direction and the town with restaurants etc a further 5 minutes walk. The walk was along the seafront with a cycle path adjacent, lots of benches to sit on along the way.
La Tranche is a lovely seaside town with a large ammount of restaurants for the size of the town. Eating out was reasonably priced with a meal with drinks(quite a few!) coming in at around 45 euro. Favourite places were Goldwing, Pizza Rico and La Phare West (lovely Moules and Frites).
The beaches were spotless and well used by locals and holidaymakers. The main beaches were life guarded and the sea was also nice and clean.
All in all a fabulous family site, we would definitely visit again and that really says it all!

A superb site for families.
The site was very clean with excellent toilet and shower facilities which were spotless day and night.
It's a quiet site so great for younger families with a good playground just by the bar area so they can play while you have a drink or two. Every evening, a family film sould be shown which had the 50+ kids glued to the large outside screen. The only exception was Friday when the clown arrived for a children's show which was magnificent.
The pool was clean (but seemed cold) and not too busy and the beach was a short 10 minute walk (it's probably only 5 minutes but not with a two year old!)
Good sized pitches and lots of shade. Only about 200 pitches overall.
La Tranche is a lovely town about 20 minutes walk (again at 2 year old pace) with a great selection of restaurants and shops.
We'll be back next year - a superb place.

This was our first expedition into a smaller site in France and on the whole we found the experience to be very enjoyable.
There are a mix of rentable statics and pitches for tents and touring vans on the site. The site owners are friendly and helpful. There is a little night time entertainment which our kids thoroughly enjoyed - this was usually a DVD screening.
The surrounding beaches are superb, La Terriere as mentioned in another review was a top class surfing beach - with plenty of space early - then filled by our French cousins who usually arrive close to or after mid day. Even for our young kids the beaches could be reached by a pretty safe cycle ride.
There are a couple roads around the site that could get busy and parking around the beaches later in the day could be a nightmare - cycling proved to be a pretty good option for most places. The pitches are typically French coastal and a little tight, but the owners helped us and everyone else we saw get their units on to the ideal spot.
We liked the 0815 bread guy as he was a pretty good prompt to get up and out and try out our pigeon French on. His food was delicious but a little pricey - but we still bought fresh croissants most days! There is a supermarket just across the road with a pretty good selection of food and other stuff.
Overall we loved this site and will be certainly returning again.

We came to Camping Bel in August 2010, we had previously visited twice before but booked with Keycamp (in a mobile home) but this year we came with our own tent & booked with the Camping & Caravanning Club (who were excellent). Our children are 9 & 7.
We took the Brittany Ferry with an overnight cabin & we were at the campsite by 11.30. Our pitch wasn't quite ready but we only waited 30 mins & the owner took us to our pitch, both him & his wife were really polite & friendly. We didn't really ask them much because we had been before but we were given some leaflets & stuff when we checked in.
Our pitch was a good size & in a good position, although it was quite shady. There was a water tap at the pitch & we had an electric hookup.
We took our bikes & we cycled miles (only got in the car once in the 2 weeks we were there & that was to go to La Rochelle!).
The toilets & showers were always being cleaned, we never queued for a shower & the water was hot. The water for washing up wasn't that hot though.
The pool is very simple but spotlessly clean, they are not strict about the type of trunks you wear & they do allow inflatables! The gift for booking with Keycamp & Eurocamp were water guns which were a pain!
We like the beach at La Phare best, it is fantastic, loads of cycle parking & a new beach bar!
The beach at La Tranche is quite busy & quite commercialised but easliy walked to from the campsite & if you hadn't been to the other beaches you wouldn't know any different!
You can easily walk into town & there is everything there, restaurants, ice creams & shops etc.
The Super you is just a few minutes walk away & the bread man does come every morning, he rings his bell at 8.15 (no chance of a lie in!) & is pretty miserable but my daughter loved going with her Dad every morning & choosing a doughnut!
The weather wasn't that brilliant for our second week, we experienced an amazing thunderstorm one night, had one day when it rained all day, another morning of rain & we took down in the rain & had to dry out when we got home!
We will probably try a little further South next year but this is a lovely site & if we had to come back we wouldn't mind!

This was our second year in a row at this site, something we don't normally do and it will not be our last.
It is a small site, with Eurocamp and Keycamp statics and tents. It also has pitches that you can book direct with Eurocamp Independent and the C.C.C. The pitch size was big enough for us, we were able to park our car alongside the awning.
The owners are very friendly and helpful. We booked direct with the site, they take bookings from January, but can be a few days before you get a reply if you e-mail them.
It has only a small takeaway with a limited menu, but there is a large super you within 5 mins walk. Also the town has a good selection of bars and restaurants, would recommend Le Phare West.
The town beach is good, but can be crowded. We went to La Terriere, which is a 10 min car journey. Go early as parking is a problem in the afternoon, always got a space when we went about 11am.
The location of this site means that you do not need to use your car and there is a free bus that does a circuit of the town and some of the surrounding area from early morning to late at night.
The toilets and showers are kept really clean and we never had to queue for a shower.
It is very quiet at night, probably due to the fact that it is mostly used by families with small children. This year we noticed an increase in the number of teenagers that were there, but they were well behaved. Our children are 11 and 13 years and they love the site, but they do not need to have activities organised for them.
The kids club during the day is run by the Eurocamp/Keycamp Reps. Our daughter used it the first year we were there, as we had booked through Eurocamp Independent and she enjoyed it.
The evening entertainment is aimed at younger children, with their parents enjoying a drink at the bar, while still being able to see them.
The entrance is difficult to find when approaching from the Super you side of town, we drove past, the first time we were there and had problems finding somewhere to turn with our caravan.
As said before not the cheapest of campsites, if you want to compare it to others further inland with more facilities, but think it is hard to beat for cleanliness and location. Have been trying to find somewhere different that ticks all the same boxes, but so far have had no luck.

Ok, here's my 2 euros worth. Regardless of what I am going to kick off with I would return to Camping Bel and will recommend it but I do feel that a couple of issues have not been addressed in other reviews. These are noise related. The infamous breadman arrives at the front of the site at about 08.15 am and announces his arrival with a very loud school bell. After serving his first customers he then proceeds around the site ringing this bloomin' thing. The site is bordered on a couple of sides by 'minor' roads, one of which can be particularly busy throughout the day and even at night. The main road into town is not too far away either so there is a constant hum of traffic. There is aso a small airport close by for light aircraft from which the french version of Evil Knievel applies his trade !
Finally, the irresponsible staff of Keycamp and Eurocamp who had the occasional habit of staying up late (02,30 am on one occasion) boozing and shouting and not respecting the unwritten law of keeping it quiet after 23.00. I don't want to sound like a killjoy here but the 02.30 incident woke me up even with earplugs in. If I'd have been packing up the following day and then faced with my 5 hour drive to Caen then the ear bashing they received from the owners the next morning might well have been a bashing of a different kind. As it was I was very impressed with the way in which the owners dealt with the situation and have nothing but praise for the way they conduct their business overall.
Now take that all away and you have your very own piece of paradise !
The site could not be more conveniently situated for a stroll into town, the local beach and the Super you supermarket. Go 1st thing in the morning or between 16.00 to 18.00 in the evening when the majority of the French are on the beach. Super you is open on a Sunday morning. This supermarket hasn't quite killed off all the local trade as there is a local butcher shop and fishmonger in La Tranche and also in La Briere which is a 5 minute drive down the road. If you like a chillie fix then La Briere is the place to go for a very good Thai restaurant (thanks Rob) called Aonang. Drive thru the town it is situated on the outskirts on the right hand side. In La Tranche there are numerous amounts of restaurants of all types but you have to get your timing right or they become mobbed and you might miss out. If you fancy seeing Monsieur and Madam Basil Fawlty then visit Hotel Atlantique. This hotel / restaurant also has wi-fi for paying customers but considering how pricey a coke is get your wi-fi elsewhere. The place to go is the Office of Tourism which is next to the main square. This is the hotspot for Vendee wi-fi (up to 100 metres) and will cost 1 euro for the day. The office will give you the necessary leaflet with all the connection details. The main square is also the location for a market held on a Tuesday and a Saturday. If you like an oyster then you will be able to purchase 1 kilo for 5 euros and under depending on size.
I might have to reach for a tissue in a minute cos I'm now realising how much I enjoyed La Tranche and how much I already miss it ! What I am really having severe withdrawal symtems from (apart from the cheep vino collapso) is the beach and a swim in the waves. La Terriere is where we spent most of our time. In the opposite direction to La Briere it is about a 10 minute drive and also reachable for those of you who enjoy your bikes. It is quite windy so we took windbreaks as a necessity as well as umbrellas and chairs. With the wind comes the waves. This beach goes on forever, has lifeguards in one spot and a very reasonably priced restaurant if you don't fancy making baguettes for lunch. Right that's it, oh no it isn't.! Getting there and back for tent people who can't stop anywhere you can't really beat the Portsmoth-St Malo and Caen-Portsmouth overnight crossings, in my opinion !
Regards to all of you that we met and had a larf with. Especially our neighbours for most of the time of our stay, Reg and Sue.(He does work for Gobur)!

We've just returned from a wonderful holiday at this campsite. We drove from Calais (with an over night stop at Alencon) and the total driving time was around 7.5 hours.
This is a great campsite if you have young kids. Ours are 6 and 4 and they had a great time cycling around the campsite making new friends. There are a total of 3 playgrounds on the campsite. The clown on a friday night is a must - good fun for kids and parents!
The facilities are very, very good - always being cleaned. We were there for a total of 12 nights and we didn't have to queue for anything.
If you can bring bikes, do. We cycled from the campsite into La Tranche Sur Mer easily with the kids as there are good cycle paths. The main beach at La Tranche is OK but we found that nearby La Phare beach much nicer. You'll have to drive (past the pine woods) but worth it and the parking is easy.
The pitches are a bit small but we managed and we have a large tent. The pitches are separated by high hedges so if you like to see what's going on you may prefer a more open feel.
Look out for the lizards and bats!

We stayed here for two weeks in June/July 2009, this is lovely little site just outside of La tranche sur mer, it is extremely well located you can walk to the lovely sandy beaches and the town also a short walk away there is also a Super you supermarket within walking distance. This shop sells absolutely everything even some camping equipment!
The campsite is quiet, the toilets and showers are very clean and tidy and the cleaners never seem to stop cleaning them. The Pool is nice and there are two playgrounds for children, there are films shown in the evening for kids and entertainment in the evening from July onwards.
The pitch sizes vary but the owner allocates you a pitch according to your needs, all the pitches have water and drainage for grey waste and 10 amp electricity. Which you will need the old style european adapter to connect up to. Also when I checked the polarity it was reversed so I used a lead to correct it. However other brits used the electric without reversing the polarity and didn't seem to have any problems.
All in all this is lovely site in a great location and ideal for families with young children.
