The Fox and Hounds campsite was a great find. We decided to have a 'get away from it all' Christmas. We live in Cornwall and it was only 30 miles from home - arrived on Christmas Day and cooked our roast dinner -weather was damp and misty but didn't matter as we had planned a cosy day 'at home'.
Went over to the pub in the evening and joined in a rather manic pub quiz - good fun and we had a fantastic supper buffet on the house. Lovely food and the best chips ever- we were made very welcome by the staff. Stayed for 3 nights. Site is next to a footpath leading directly on to Dartmoor so excellent walking in sunshine!
Friends came over who lived near Crediton and we treated them to lunch in the pub. It was their first visit to the pub and they rated it a real keeper. Pie of the day - pork and Stilton was rated by my husband as the best pie he had ever eaten. They serve food all day - very fresh and home cooked.
The site is quiet and great hot showers, staff excellent and we certainly will be back!

Great friendly site, just what we needed for a 1 night stop - though you could easily stay longer. Facilities are basic but free hot showers and a pitch with EHU starts from £10. 50. So not expensive at all.
The pub serves pub & more restaurant type food. Dogs are welcome in the bar, but doesn't really matter as all food is served anywhere you want to sit. The site obviously has some long term residents but adds to the charm. Only thing I would maybe update is, it would be nice to have a locking door on the shower as it's just a shower curtain, but the shower is hot and free - worth noting they are up a flight of steps.
A good site, nice people and excellent value.

Used this site as a stop over on way to Cornwall. Site had a few static caravans and some tourer caravans that looked like they were permanently there. Basically a field behind a pub with 2 ladies toilets and a sink and a shower ( mens' same ) above a separate building which I think was a skittle alley.
Shower only had a curtain with no door which I found a bit strange ! Only stopped one night so wasn't an issue. Nice walks over moors next to site. Only £10 for our family so a great cheap stop over.
couldn't see that there were any washing up facilities.

Clean tidy facilities my wife says the showers were the best in this region, easy going site my best experience was the food in the pub. Its definitely an eating pub I would rate it 9. 8 out of 10.
It took me a bit of finding but that was due to driver error (I am not familiar with this area) but it was a gem and worth finding.

We thought we'd give this place a go, as our usual overnight stopover site for Cornwall closed last year. It's about 4 miles south of the A30 so staying there as a stop over involves a small detour, but it's well worth it.
It's a fairly small site behind an ageing pub/hotel on the edge of Dartmoor. There are a few static caravans and clearly some long term residents staying on the site, apart from them we pretty much had the place to ourselves, even in peak season. Access to the site is down a small lane between some out buildings and therefore might be a bit tight if you're towing a big caravan, but you should be fine so long as you watch out for the big stone on the right hand side as you pass through the gate to the field.
The toilet & shower block is small, but clean & relatively modern. It's also well hidden on the upper floor of the outbuilding that's to your left as you walk up the lane from the road. There were no signs when we visited though and I only found the shower block by chance when I saw a door open at the top of an external wooden staircase and decided to investigate!
A short walk up the lane that runs down the side of the site, leads to the national park, with some spectacular views & scenery, making this a perfect base for exploring/hiking on dartmoor. The pub/hotel attached to the site is a traditional country inn with friendly & helpful staff. The place probably needed a makeover about 20 years ago, but that's all part of it's old fashioned charm and really shouldn't be changed in my opinion. We decided to try the Breakfast on offer there, which was reasonable enough, but at £9. 95 for adults & £6. 95 for kids, it was a bit overpriced for what it was and the type of place serving it.
At £8. 50 per night (+ £3 for Electric Hook Up) though, this place is an absolute bargain, I've paid more than double that for similar sites with no facilities and this place has a shower block & hook up! I'd thoroughly recommend it as a stopover, or even for a couple of days exploring Dartmoor. At that price we'll definitely be back, although we'll probably give breakfast a miss next time.

We went here for the weekend. We have stayed here a few times as its fairly close to home
The site is on the edge of Dartmoor with good walks a few steps away.
The site is grassed and sloping at the top but level nearer the pub. The toilets and showers are upstairs in a barn, the stairs is outside but well lit at night. Some of the reviews say the toilets are grubby, they are cleaned regularly but a lot of hikers use them and drop mud on the floor.
The staff are friendly and the beer is good. The food is normally very good if a bit pricey. Sometimes the quality is a bit iffy.
The pub is next to the main road to Tavistock but is not noisy.
Lydford is about 2 miles away with the gorge to walk around, the castle(which was really a prison) a good pub next to it and the Granite way (a cycle path}

We've just had a week at the site and found it a nice place if you don't mind basic facilities, the field was lovely and big and our pitch was good and flat. Although there was a group of Sea Scouts the first weekend we weren't disturbed noise wise, the 'rickety' stairs as spoken about in other reviews must have been replaced as they were fine although steep so not suitable for anyone with problems.
The two female toilets were basic and were cleaned daily and toilet rolls replenished, the only mess came from other inconsiderate campers. The shower was a cubicle in the toilet room so wasn't very private but if you showered first thing or when other campers were out then you had the room to yourself, however the shower wasn't working the last two days. I'd say that its best to take your own porta loo and be prepared to wash in your tent like we did and you'll be fine.
The site is very near the Granite cycle trail and there's a track from the site that goes straight out onto the moor so its ideally sited for bikers/walkers, we ate in the hotel/pub one evening and the service was very good
The owners were very friendly and helpful, we'd go back there again. We used the Sun £1 pitch vouchers and paid for electric hook up so it only cost us £6 a night all in all a nice cheap weeks holiday and the weather was kind to us.

We have just spent a weekend at this site and it's great for location and pitch space - a lovely field.
Given the weather of this summer so far it was quite empty when we arrived so the fact that there were just 2 toilets (2 ladies and 2 gents) was ok. The only shower was very small, and as previously mentioned there was absolutely no privacy for dressing as the shower cubicle is in the toilet / sink area. The only place to put your clean / dirty clothes and towel is on the floor outside the shower cubicle (which could probably become quite grubby when the site is busy). There is a wide window sill you could use, but that wasn't within reach of the shower so you'd have to wander naked to reach your towel if you put it there!
We didn't notice it becoming dirty but they were definitely slow to replace toilet rolls - often empty or almost empty.
Another negative is that there is no facility for dish-washing so be prepared to boil kettles!
But for the price of £8 per night (despite the website informing us it was £6. 50) it was still good value.

Access to site is good, up bumpy track, between two buildings and then through 1st gate on the right.
Watch the road before it, as it is 40mph and we saw a mobile speed trap on a Sunday morning.
There are 5 hardstandings with water close by and all with electric.
At first glance the site looks a bit grubby, but it is close to the moor, just up the lane and the pub is 10 yds away.
The toilets are functioning and could do with updating. The shower is warm/hot but there is no heating in the block so it is decidedly chilly in the winter. Toilets leaked.
We had a meal in the pub and found it reasonable value.
We would have used the site even if there were no toilets, having them was a bonus.
I don't think we would visit in the summer, because it may be too crowded.
We will certainly go again as we like walking, the site was reasonably priced, the staff in the pub were all friendly and efficient, with good food and beer.

The purpose of our visit was a little different to the norm, as we were invited as part of a wedding party, so the site was very busy.
There is a pub attached to the site, which serves traditional home cooked locally sourced food with friendly service.
The sites facilities are very basic, the toilets and shower are upstairs in the bunk house. The shower cubical is in the same room as the toilets, so you basically step out the shower and have no privacy what so ever! The toilets were often dirty and one of the two always had a pool of water around it. A simple shower curtain would help this a lot, and a hook for your towel etc would be helpful too.
The rest of the sites facilities are; there are a couple of water points on the site, and there is a waste disposal although we didn't need one. The EHU which we also didn't need actually looked quite new and seemed to be sufficient for the others pitched along side us.
I don't think I would use this site again, simply because the facilities are so poor.
