We spent 2 days at this wonderful peaceful site, we pitched in a delightful spot in the woods, on arrival Richard the owner showed us around and was very friendly and helpful. The toilets showers and washing up area was clean and in good order. On Sunday had a lovely walk into Tenterden about 2 miles through woods and fields then took a trip on steam train stopping at Bodiam for a pub lunch, the train is a must!
We are definitely planning a second visit soon, thank you Richard for bump starting our car this morning. Wine fridge was on too long!

Loved it!
Just had a couple of days in the countryside and glad we found this site.
Friendly owners, clean and spacious.
Used one of the plots up in the woods.
Being a Caravan Club licenced site, nowhere on the site is overcrowded. The SITE FULL Sign went up on the gate well before most other sites would have even thought about stopping more pitching their tents up next to you.
Oh and No Kids! Personally, that's a bonus :)
Will be back :)

What a pleasant site! We were trying out our new tent and this site is only 1hr. Away. As we were looking for the hook ups, the owner appeared and pointed us to a pitch with a very nice view over the fields explained the layout and said any queries just ask.
The toilet & showers were very clean & not only was a sink inside the block the owner had added a covered wash-up area on the side which worked very well.
All in all the site was well maintained, quiet, with plenty of room on each pitch and just what we were looking for.
We hope to go back as often as we can.

If you are looking for a very quite site then this could be for you. If you are looking for well kept lawns and flower beds then this is not the one. What you will find is a very nice and friendly owner who will help you with any questions you have and will talk to you even if he is busy maintaining the woods and grounds. You can feed the carp in the lake and food for them is provided but you can give them your scraps of bread. Its well located as a base to see quite a lot of Kent. We have been here twice now and will be going again. And again.

We stayed here for one night this weekend in our 5m bell tent, our very first camping trip - a trial run to see how we got on. We originally booked for 2 nights but I had to leave early as I became ill due to the heat.
Tenterden is about one and a half hours away from us but feels local as I often have to travel that way for work so we felt we weren't too far away to do our test run of our tent.
The campsite is larger than I expected, with lots of space. There is a section for caravans on the right as you first enter, on the left by the entrance is the loo, water, shower and recycling. The CDP is right at the gate.
Straight ahead is the section for tents and I think most of these have hook ups. However I was aiming for the 'woodland' pitch. When I rang, I mentioned that we had a big tent and the owner said that was fine, and a dog and he said that we might like to pitch in the woods if the tent fitted. I said yes please! When we arrived I couldn't quite see where we were supposed to go but as we were pulling up in the tent section, he came over and took my OH round to the woodland pitch, we then drove round.
There are 2 woodland pitches, well away from the rest of the site, down the path that forms part of the woodland walk - but accessed from the main tent site not the caravan site. The pitches are sort of opposite each other and we chose the biggest one which overlooks the little lake/pond.
These pitches feel like you are totally on your own and in the middle of nowhere, you cant hear or see anyone else, they were just what we were looking for.
I did use the loo a few times despite having our own porta loo and this was clean and well appointed. I didn't use the shower as we have our own but it looked ok.
The site is about 1 mile on the road from St Michaels. This little village/hamlet has a pub (sky sports showing - not my cup of tea), indian takeaway, chinese takeaway, fish and chip shop, 2 local shops one a post office also and a petrol station (expensive petrol). The lady in the 'best one' shop was very helpful and said I could use her freezers as I had forgotten our coolbag!
I have nothing negative to say about this site, the price was £11 for our tent because we didn't have electric, I think it was £3 more if you did. We paid for 2 nights even though we left early as that is what we booked. You put the money in an envelope which is on the wall and pop it through the letter box of the house next door (to the right of the campsite as you leave). We may use the site again simply because its nice but would look to travel further afield once we are a bit more confident.
Actually the only thing I didn't like was the hand written signs around the place which looked a bit scruffy but this is not really anything major.

Gate Lodge is a pleasant little site set amidst the rolling countryside of the Kent Weald and has hard-standing plots for about ten caravans with hook-ups, as well as a lower field for pitching tents. It is shielded on its north flank by a wooded area that boasts a small lake (with wild carp that will obligingly bob to the surface if you toss them some food pellets) and a circular walk for exercising the dog. Alternatively, if your dog requires more vigorous exercise then the longer circular walk through Knock Wood is to hand a short walk up the road, as well as several walks following marked footpaths across the adjacent farms.
We stayed there during Easter week when the weather was far colder than usual. The fact that all the caravans on the site that weekend had their glow-heaters working at full tilt may also explain why we experienced a few circuit tripping problems whilst there, but which ceased once some of those caravans moved on after Easter Monday.
Whilst the lawns may not be manicured and the facilities are fairly basic, Gate Lodge is cheap (£14 per night with hook-up), the owners are friendly and trusting (just place your site fee in an envelope provided by the entrance and post it through their letterbox when you’re ready) and – most of all – it’s peaceful. Located down a country lane, all there is to disturb the tranquillity are the bleats of lambs on distant farms, the odd pheasant calling for its mate, a few mooching rabbits, and (at night) the vigil of a resident owl.
In the facilities block there’s a rack of books and magazines to borrow, a toilet cubicle (where the fuse trips are located), and male and female shower cubicles with toilets. The showers work by switching on the immersion heater and returning after half-hour, by which time the water is more than hot enough for a prolonged soaking – although I did wonder what might happen at busy periods should someone just breeze in and ‘steal’ an intending bather’s water! As it happened, the climate that week was simply too cold for all but the bravest camper to sample the showers – although yours truly did once or twice (for research purposes, that is!).
The site is located just ten minutes drive from Tenterden town centre, where there are large Waitrose and Tesco stores and an interesting assortment of smaller shops. Tenterden also plays host to the principal station along the Kent & East Sussex preserved steam railway, where there is an enchanting museum chronicling the story of the line. Other attractions within an easy drive include Bodiam Castle, the Elizabethan stately home and gardens at Sissinghurst, and the beaches that stretch between Dymchurch, Dungeness and Camber Sands.
Closer to hand, it is about fifteen minutes walk into the village of St Michael’s, where there are convenience stores, a chip shop and a pub or two. Buses can also be boarded here for Tenterden and Maidstone.
In summary, whilst Gate Lodge doesn’t do opulence or fancy gimmicks, it is without doubt a superb little gem of a campsite for those looking for a restful stay away from the madding crowd. And because it is only just over half-hour off the M20, it should also be considered as a convenient overnighting point on the way to or from Dover, Folkestone or the Channel Tunnel.

We had a peaceful stay at this adult only CS. Well laid out with some hard-standings and hook-ups to all van pitches with an additional area for tents and wild camping pitches in the woods. We chose our own pitch and put the payment of £14pn (including hook-up) in an envelope and posted it through the front door to the house. A lovely wooded area to walk dogs. Also there’s a large pond where you can feed the fish.
Facilities were a bit basic consisting of 2 showers with toilets and one other toilet. There was a sink for washing up and an information board with leaflets etc. We met the owner as he was cleaning the facilities. Very nice man and he spoke of the constant refurbishments he carries out on the site. Short drive to steam railway and vineyard. Quiet lanes for walking and cycling. We will return and would definitely recommend it.

A nicely kept site with clean, if basic facilities. It is a small site with only nine electric hook-ups but some room for wild camping.
There is a garage and a spar, in easy walking distance, that sell most necessary basics but it is the location that makes this place special.
Situated on the outskirts of Tenterden, next to a wooded area and fields.
It is tranquil and restful, with a pond full of fish to watch and feed and beautiful country walks literally on your doorstep.
If I was ever back in this part of Britain I would certainly use this site again. Recommended.

Though facilities are basic, they are clean. If you are looking for somewhere quiet and tranquil this is your place,
With lovely views and lots of wildlife, the owner leaves food to feed the fish in the pond or you are invited to throw your left overs in, either way you will please the over eager fish,
We never saw the owner all weekend so you are left to your own devices which suited us fine,
Nearest pub (The Crown) is just a 25 minute walk away with a pleasant welcome awaiting you.
We will be definitely be returning !

Excellent site - hardstandings for campers and vans and a large field for tents, etc with a lovely view. Very quiet with woodland walk and large pond. Toilets and showers well provided with soap, etc and kept clean and painted, with instructions as to what to do with immersion etc, - no restriction on length of shower and temperature adjustable and plenty of hot water. Friendly family and not many rules! - Quite a central location for the Weald and the coast and an opportunity to travel through the Kent countryside at your own pace.
