Crakaig camp & caravan site is situated on the north coast of the Moray Firth in the county of Sutherland (NB it is not in Inverness-shire, which is two counties away!).
The philosophy of the site is to have as few rules as possible. You aren’t allocated a pitch, you just arrive and set up where you like; sometime before dark someone will (probably!) come round and ask you for £10 for the night.
The site is about a mile long so you can be sure there will always be space for you. Fires are permitted anywhere, but most people use existing fire-pits/sites rather than creating new ones. The standing is grass on sandy soil, meaning there were no midges!
The beauty of the area, its sunrises and sunsets, can hardly be exaggerated.
The Ladies section of the toilet block has two WCs, a shower, and two washbasins; my husband tells me it’s exactly the same in the Gents. Outside there is a sink/draining board, and an extra tap for filling water carriers.
We have been using Crakaig for five years now and only once was there a problem with hot water, a pilot blew out, and it was soon rectified. The water comes off the moor above and has a very slight discolouration from peat; if this bothers you take separate drinking water.
There are no electric hook-ups; many of the ‘vans at Crakaig are there long-term and have their own facilities. This year we are parked there for the summer and have a photo-voltaic panel trickle charging the battery when we’re away.
Another visitor commented on ‘vans being tied down. This is just a sensible precaution if you’re leaving your ‘van there for the summer (or all year) - it doesn’t mean it’s any windier at Crakaig than other coastal sites.
To reach Crakaig drive north of Brora (on the A9) about 5 miles and watch for the sign (on landward side of road) saying Crakaig. Turn right and follow the paved, public road till you get to the railway. You may need to open a gate here. The bridge may appear narrow but there is lots of room - our ‘van is 6'8' wide (2 metres) and there is > 20' of free space each side when we go through. There is also plenty of height for ‘vans but it is not suitable for the box-shaped motorhomes - those built in panel vans get through easily - we have had our long wheelbase double-wheel Sprinter through.
Once through the bridge the road rises and bears left - a dirt estate road. DO NOT drop down by the first road to the right - it is fairly rough - drive on a bit further and drop down by the second road.
Crakaig attracted publicity some years ago by opening a naturist section. When we were first visiting there was a sign pointing to the west [south] end of the site, the sign seems to have gone and we never saw any naturists anyway. (My husband and a friend swam in the sea mid-September and found it quite pleasant. ) Seals are often seen towards the north end of the site.
Crakaig is almost equidistant between Brora and Helmsdale. The former has more shops, including a Co-Operative Food Store. Both sell bottled gas.
Fishing is available; golf; lots of prehistoric sites. If you're into amateur astronomy the site is free of light pollution. Despite the relaxed attitude of the owners, it does not attract partiers.

I had planned to stay here a few days on my way up to Dunnet Head. I had spoken to the owner on the telephone and he had told me it was a very relaxed site with as few rules as possible - allowing camp fires & bar b q's etc. There is no need to book as there is plenty of space, and to be honest I was glad I had not booked when I got there.
The access road is very badly potholed and you have to negotiate under a very narrow railway bridge, which wasn't a problem for me, but may be for users of larger units.
Once on the site I could see the attraction as it is literally in the sand dunes, and looks out over the sea. There are no real pitches set out, instead you pitch where you feel like. There is little shelter from the elements however and I noticed that some of the caravans were tied down and staked into the ground - suggesting that windy days might be a problem! Although was a beautiful sunny & dry day when I arrived I managed to get stuck on the poor road, and as heavy rain was expected that night I was concerned that I may get stuck fast and decided not to stay.
There are toilets and showers, but I didn't stay long enough to try them out - there are no electric hook ups and at the time I visited the site charged £10 per night.
