Visited this site over the Bank Holiday weekend. Not very well signposted but thank god for Sat Nav. Site was very clean and a major bonus having a real camp fire. The field has a wooden built shower/washing up hut which was not mentioned on the Website. This was a lovely surprise although the two showers did have white mould, which was easily wiped off leaving a reasonable shower Area. The toilets took some getting used to and unfortunately, we had to put up our toilet tent on the Sunday after one of our Party saw a furry black animal running on the 'organic' debris which was in the toilet. Had a problem getting off of the site on the Sunday and we had to push our way up the slope. I am sure it would be a simple and inexpensive task to put some shingle on that part of the track. Logs were available at £5 per bag (lasted a day) and some amazing home made cakes for sale in the 'hut'. Fresh eggs were also available. Overall I thought it was a lovely site but not sure if we would go back because of the toilets.

Visited Freshwinds campsite with other guide leaders for a short mid week break. Compost toilet was different, but clean and functional. Nice camp kitchen area where you can washup and pickup a bag of logs for the camp fire. The week was a bit wet, but it did not stop us enjoying the break and going to Rye. Campsite is peaceful and relaxing. Hopefully the next time we visit there maybe showers at the campsite.

We have just returned from a two night stay at the fabulous Freshwinds. We stayed in their Woodland Yurt and and as townies we were so impressed with how wonderfully remote it was. There are two yurts included in the price, but we only used the one with the wood-burner as the weather had been so unpredictable that the bedroom yurt would have been much to cold.
In the large yurt there is a double bed and two single futons so it comfortably accommodated the four of us (two adults and two children). There's a camping gas stove with a grill and two rings, lots of pots and pans, crockery, cutlery, in fact everything that you might need.
The wood-burner keeps the yurt toasty but beware that during the night, when the fire has died down, it does get mighty chilly so we were glad we took our sleeping bags to use under the duvets they provided.
Anne was great and took all our bags down to the yurt, which is a good walk from the farm, in their little 4x4 so we didn't have to carry it all, and once we had unloaded she informed us that she would be bottle feeding the newborn lambs at 6pm if we wanted to help out.
Anne was happy to let my boys feed the lambs and took us to meet all the animals. We met the cows, calves and even the bull as well as their dogs.
The site is handy for Hastings and Rye and also Bodiam Castle and we were not short of things to keep us occupied.
The downside, if you could call it that was the compost toilet and although this didn't bother us in the slightest, some people who like their creature comforts may find it a bit rustic, and it is a brisk walk from the yurt to the flushing toilet and the shower, also the inside of the yurt got a bit soggy when it rained but again if you are a hardened camper then this is not a problem. Finally this may not be suitable if you have young children, ours are 7 and 11 and understand how to be sensible and not play in the stream or disappear too far into the woods, but if your children are younger you might need the Owl yurt as it is not near water.
In summary this is a wonderful site, a haven of peace and tranquillity, run by lovely people. I would recommend it to anyone.

A nice well laid out site. Every thing you expect from a caravan club site, very clean, friendly wardens and good facilities.
Nice and peaceful with nature all around.
The one drawback is the narrow approach road, watermill lane(hence the restriction on arrival and departing times).
Although children can play quite safely there are no facilities for them, a long stay for families would not be recommended.
If you like fresh home made pies and sausages there is a wonderful butcher in Pett village, surely worth a visit.
The best recommendation I can give is that this was not my first visit and it will not be my last.

Just got back from Freshwinds and I have to say we were a little disappointed. Having read the reviews and looked extensively at their website I thought I knew what to expect.
Yes the field is lovely and big but the access down to it in anything other than the beautiful sunshine we had would be a nightmare. Infact some other campers told us that the previous week they had had to be towed out and then had to park at the top of the hill till the mud dried up.
The showers were up at the farm which would have been fine - they were hot and spacious - had the route up there been easier. It was either up the road or across 3 fields none of which were made easy, such as climbing over a barb wire fence.
The compost toilets were actually better than expected, virtually no smell but again they weren't maintained. In fact we had to text the owner to say that they'd run out of toilet roll and wood chippings.
The kids loved it, they made lots of friends playing in the stream and woods. The star gazing was amazing, best I've seen for ages. It was lovely to be able to have an open fire (bags of logs for sale £5) and it was a lovely field.
It is in a lovely area, East Sussex is charming with loads to do and see. The site itself is back to basics camping and that would have completely ticked our boxes had a little thought been given to a couple of things, such as stiles over the fences, directions or a map of the site and better access to the field, as none of our fellow campers had 4x4 cars, which you would need in wet weather.

Having just returned from a visit to this gem of a campsite I had to write a review.
We spent our first night in the Owl Yurt. Should have been 2 nights but the car broke down. It was more than we expected. We had the most comfortable night ever. It has a double bed and 2 single futon beds. A wood burner, 2 gas ringed stove and everything you need. The compost toilet is a novelty and I was surprised just how well it works.
The Yurt is in a secluded spot but near to the the showers in the shed.
We then spent 4 nights camping in the field. You are able to have a camp fire which was lovely. The whole time we were there was no more than 7 tents. Next time we are going to try out the Teepee. Tim and Anne are a lovely couple and we will definitely be back there soon.

Just returned from a lovely weekend here with my partner and our 2 young boys. We stayed in the very secluded Woodland Yurt. If you want peace and quiet then I would thoroughly recommend this.
As stated in previous reviews, the owners Anne and Tim are lovely and create a friendly relaxed atmosphere where nothing is too much trouble and Anne even took my little boys to bottle feed a couple of young lambs which they loved.
The Yurt was great too with all the basic needs and a toasty log burner in one of them if it got chilly. No hook up so the candlelit evenings with a glass of wine, a small radio and a crackling fire were lovely. The compost loo is fine, and there are a couple of clean electric showers and a 'normal' loo in a barn a five minute walk from the Yurt.
If you came prepared, (shops are a 10 minute drive away) you would hardly see another soul while you were there.
Wouldn't hesitate to return here and may also try the camping field too.

Fantastic site! Very friendly owners couldn't have been more helpful.
I arrived was shown to the camping area and given the choice of pitching up in the woods or on the field. I chose the field as it was very wet and I was worried about getting down the slopes of the woods in the dark for the toilet with my youngest, I also thought the field provided lots of space for the children to run and play ball etc.
I was a little apprehensive of what to expect of a composting toilet as I have never seen one before- I was pleasantly surprised- they were very clean and not smelly. The children were very amused by the nickname 'tree big' for them.
The showers are situated a way from the camping area, it is walkable but further than we have been used to on other sites. The showers had plenty of warm water and were very clean, not the most aesthetically pleasing as they are similar to a portable loo in design, they are situated in a barn so there is space added onto them so I was easily able to shower my daughter and not have our clothes get wet.
The barn the showers are in has a very comfortable seating area with some books and a couple of games to occupy you. We spent some time here after our showers to allow our hair to dry etc playing. There is also an honesty shop in the barn where you can buy eggs, camp fire starter kits and other mementos of your stay. Very reasonably priced, we bought a dozen eggs to bring home with us.
We spent our weekend on site so can not comment on the surrounding area.
We are planning on coming back during the next school holidays for another relaxing away from it all break.

Magical, breathtaking, serene, WOW.
Back to basics, yes indeed, the basics of beauty, simplicity and peace all around, we loved it, Couldn, t wipe the smile off my face whilst tucked under the tree, s as it was pouring with rain, soaked to the bone and trying our best to pitch a tent, , , and still smiling. Yes Tim and Ann it is indeed a gem. Your words were that you really wanted to share the beauty you were surrounded with, with others and give them there own peace of tranquility and woodland all to themselves, well that's what we experienced and more. We pitched in the woodlands. Yes it was pouring but I had faith that it would change for the better and it did, it was my birthday, I see me and my 22 year old son sitting in the woodlands listening to the crackling logs on our own made fire and enjoying all the enchanting sounds of wildlife, owls hooting, creatures scurrying amongst the leaves, whilst sipping my one bottle of champy id been saving for a special occasion, we saw little but heard everything, it was a memory that I can still feel in everyone of my senses to this very day, I close my eyes and I'm back there and smiling. Facilities yet a small ride away, absolutely fantastic, beautiful old stable block made into a fantastic welcoming serene room, great boiling showers, sinks to clean things in, freezer for your ice packs and even to chill a beer or a wine, information to read, eggs and veggies, , , wow the simplicity of knowing wat the necessities are and able to provide that wrapped in a beautiful spiritually breathtaking experience. And yes even the compost toilet was a great novelty, , so well built and perfectly fitting into the nature surrounding, being alone in the fields I was able to leave my door open and watch the bunnies bouncing around, lol a bit to much information but every word filled with the passion and connection I felt with this place. Thankyou for making this possible, :)

This is a review of the campsite as opposed to the tipi/yurts. We had a wonderful and memorable holiday! After bad experiences in the past with overcrowded sites this was just what we wanted. We chose to camp in one of the fields and had it pretty much all to ourselves all week! There’s a choice of a few woodland pitches and two fields. Beforehand I’d been slightly wary of the idea of just one compost toilet but it was absolutely fine! In fact it almost added to the holiday in a funny kind of way as it was such a novelty! (Especially at night by torchlight!) We were desperate to see a badger but unfortunately had no luck (there are setts all over the place). We did see a glow worm, a fox, bats, rabbits and many types of birds, and heard many tawny owls. In fact there were many weird and wonderful noises at night! The two showers are quite a way from the camping area, reached either by driving along the lane or a nice walk across a couple of fields. Inside a barn the owners have set up a lovely, rustic campers’ room containing among other things the showers (very good), a sink for washing-up, electrical sockets, and eggs and other produce to buy. There’s also a conventional toilet.
Moving onto the area itself, we’d wondered if we would want to spend the whole week there but in the end a week wasn’t long enough! The countryside and coast are lovely, wonderful architecture, many oast houses, plenty of footpaths/walks, Rye. Can’t wait to return.
