Church Farm is beautiful. The field we camped in was huge and there was so much space. Campfires are allowed and there is lots for children to do on the farm. However I am very disappointed with my stay. Firstly the prices are quite high £7. 50 per adult and £4. 95 per child and £10 for a fire. Therefore a family of four paid £59. 80 for the weekend. The campsite says it is wild camping but they are charging the same prices as campsites with facilities. However the facilities were appalling.

- the compost toilet in the camping field had a window with no covering so everyone could see you go about your business. The door would not shut from the inside, but had a lock on the outside.

- the toilets in the farm yard frequently stopped flushing as they ran out of water. The hand washing facilities also ran out of water. The only good thing was that they had toilet paper.

- the shower stopped working while my friend was in it and the other shower only had a cold trickle of water. Personally I don't mind about the shower as it was wild camping, but for the price you would expect a shower.

I would like to return, but either the prices should be dropped to recognise the lack of facilities or the toilets need to have water and the compost toilet a door that shuts and no window!

As we are new to camping we intended to camp here for just 2 nights. In the end only we stayed 1 and will not be making a return visit. Here is why. (1) The urinal for men in the camping field was adequate, so the men in our party said, but the ladies facilities reminded them of the 1940's outside toilets they'd seen in films. The 2 toilets at the entrance to the camp were a 10 min walk away and none of the doors locked properly so my wife had to hold her hand out to keep the door shut. There was 1 shower for the whole camp, which was also at the main entrance. We took one look and gave up on the idea of a shower. (2) There were at least 2 abandoned tents on the field. The tents were falling down and full of rubbish. Ok we said. We will still give it a go and put up our 2 tents. All while being bombarded by wasps. Nothing the owners could do anything about that because it was that time of year. We just kept the doors firmly closed after going in and out. All this we could put up with. (3) What we had no idea about were the airplanes. The camping field seemed to be under the main flight path for Luton airport. Not only did they come over every 15/20 minutes, but at night they came over really low and it woke us up every time one did. Some were so low we thought they were landing in the next field. If you are a plane spotter you would love this camping field. You could also wave to the pilot. We did look at the so called cabins but our garden shed is better. (4) The shop was expensive. The café was expensive and the local pub was astronomical. Also we couldn't make head nor tale of the food on the menu. But the chef did explain that one was breast of pigeon. We went into Stevenage for our dinner in the end and now have our doubts about camping.

We had a lovely time at this site, two tents, two dogs, two adults.

We phoned to enquire about space and paid there and then, £6. 50 per adult and no charge for the dogs. They do not offer electric hookup.

Upon arrival we drove into the farm grounds and spoke with the guy in the farm shop, who soon got the right team member to show us where to go. The farm shop is your typical type selling fruit, veg, egg, jams, chutneys, bacon and meats, cider, ale, soft drinks, ice creams, etc. There is also a cafe next to the shop, but we did not try it or go in.

The lady directed us to the area we would be camping in, which was back out of the gate, down the road and into the woods. When we first got to the edge of the woods we thought we were in the wrong place, but it turned out to be correct and, wow, what a location.

We drove in and then walked the wood to find the most suitable area to pitch and off we went. The wood was fully fenced off and as we were the only ones camping, we were able to let the dogs run free and they had a great time and we were happy knowing the perimeter fence was secure.

Once set up we decided to try The Waggonners for a pint, this was about a 7 minute walk along the road, although you can cross a field and follow the path to the pub. They had a selection of real ales, the usual lagers, spirits and wine. They also did food which was priced ok and although we did not eat, the food that was coming out of the kitchen looked and smelt lovely and the people eating were remarking on how nice it was. The locals were all really friendly and we had a good natter with them.

The wooded area we were camping in was quite a walk to the farm shop, where one will find the toilets and shower, because this was so far away we did not use them and relied on our own facilities. There is fresh water at the edge of the wood and we took our rubbish home.

There is a downside, which is plane noise and the planes coming in to land at Luton do fly overhead. However they are still pretty high at this point and whilst we could hear them, they were not that constant and we just ignored it and continued to chat, etc.

For children there is no play ground, however there are fields and woods stretching for miles, so the perfect location for kids.

Locally the town of Stevenage is pretty close, Hitchin, Baldock, etc. And direct from the site are copious walks through the countryside.

Camping in the trees was a true delight and I will definitely return to this site when next in the area.

This was our second visit but our first to a 'Camp Under the Stars, Campfire Weekend'.

The prices are greatly increased for this weekend. £36 for 2 adults and 2 children - very expensive for basic camping. There was no option not to pay extra even if you weren't there for the campfire. We had young children and it didn't get going until about 9pm so we could not be at the campfire because they were in bed.

The huge downside was the toilet facilities though. We had previously used the compost toilets and did wonder how they would cope when it was busy. We worked out there were about 150 people in the field and two completely overflowing disgusting toilets were completely inadequate. They advertise it as 'wild camping' but there were not many people around with shovels and digging their own toilets. In the current hot weather and very hard ground I would be impressed at anyone who achieved this anyway.

There was also a separate group camping in another field and when we went for a walk on the Sunday morning it was clear they had even less toilet facilities as the footpath and hedgerow behind where they had camped was full of faeces and used toilet roll.

There was also a wedding in site which is in the party field which is at the far end of the farm. There appeared to be no restriction on vehicle traffic on the farm so cars drive past the camping field until late into the night as people went to / left the wedding. Cars were also driving around the camping field late at night - which is not my ideal kind of wild camping.

On a more positive note there was a huge field to camp in (a different one to last time because they rotate them with the animals). There were quite a few people camping but plenty if space. We were a group of 3 families and had a whole area to ourselves. It is lovely to be camping on a working farm and the children enjoyed the animals, the playground and the various activities that were on at the farm. These all cost money though so do not justify the vastly inflated price.

And finally - yes they do expect you to take away your own rubbish despite charging £36 for one family tent and no facilities.

We did not find the aircraft noise mentioned by others to be a problem/annoyance in either occasion.

Have visited this site a couple of times this year, for a weekend, and once during the week. Got to say I love it. It's a basic site, and the loos and shower are just about serviceable, but I go 'self contained' using my own loo and shower in a utility tent, so that doesn't bother me.

It's a lovely location, surrounded by countryside, with great walks for the dog. But it's only a 10 minute drive from the nearest town if you need supplies. Can't say the airplane noise bothered us at all, they're pretty high up! and it's not really noticeable. The village pub is opposite the farm, and does great food in the evenings and lunchtimes. It's a nice pub, with good garden and friendly staff.

The campsite itself is part of a huge farm, and has plenty of things to keep you occupied. The kids loved the animal feeding, and farm walk. There is a cafe on the farm, which I didn't use, and a farm shop selling the usual meats, veg and of course the inevitable pickles and fruit spreads!

The camping areas are spread around, and not on top of the actual farm / shop area, and you can camp where you like in various fields or in the woods. Pick your ideal spot for the evening sunshine, and get the campfire going.

To sum up, if you have your own sanitary facilities, or don't mind using basic loos and going without a shower, then to my mind this site is brilliant.

We decided at short notice to take our kids camping (age 9 and 3) and chose Church Farm due to availability and being a 40 minute drive away.

Church Farm were putting on a 'camp under the stars night' on July 20th and although pretty pricey at £10 per adult and £8 per child (under twos £2), we thought it was worth it considering the added value that we were informed about when we phoned to enquire. Our nights camping came to £36.00, plus £10 extra for a campfire. BBQ's welcome as long as you buy your meat from the farm shop. When we phoned we asked about the high pitching price but were advised that there would be children's activities including feeding the animals, face painting and a woodland play area.

Arrival:-

Signed in outside the excessively overpriced farm shop (more on that later) and was given directions to our field. The field was located a 15 minute walk from the entrance down a rough and bumpy track.

There were no set pitches or anyone on hand to advise, so we found what we thought might be a suitable spot quite near the action (bonfire) and hopefully music.

The Bad

The large slightly sloping field was not particularly flat and quite uneven, so it was difficult to find a suitable pitch, so we had to compromise.

There was no perimeter set around the bonfire indicating a safe distance to pitch at or anyone on hand from the farm to advise.

The bonfire was completely unsupervised - children playing what to set fire to all day Sunday and no staff on hand at any point to advise their parents of the dangers or more to the point to extinguish the fire so no one got hurt!

Most of the kids activities you had to pay extra for e. G. Feeding the animals £3, Face painting £2.

The 2 compost toilets were disgusting, my wife and daughter couldn’t use them so had to plan visits to the entrance 15 minutes walk away.

There were no shelter marquees as indicated in their campfire weekend information - thank God it wasn't so hot with plenty of cloud cover.

Areas of the farm were not very well signposted. My wife and kids couldn't find the entrance to the woodland play area although they could see it behind a fence. As it was quite a walk back to ask at the shop for help, they gave up.

The main toilets were a 15 minute trek uphill

Only one shower, again a 15 minute trek uphill - it seems the shower has got worse since these other reviewers left their comments in May 2012 and August 2012 :-

'The shower - It should just be advertised specifying there is no shower as the shower was totally inadequate - a cold dribble, leaking all over the floor - one of the staff confirmed that this has been the case for a while. '

'Unfortunately the one shower cubicle available is in a portacabin. This portacabin floor was filled with muddy water from the previous user(s) and the shower dribbled hot and cold. It overflowed onto the floor and created a pool of water which you then had to try and get changed over. It was appalling. '

The shower is exactly as described above but now you have to decide whether to have a cold shower or a scalding one as the unit is broken. The shower cubical itself was very dirty and in a poor state of repair. One broken shower for 100’s of campers….

All rubbish has to be taken back by you else a £5 per bin bag fee is charged.

The Good

The night’s music was mostly of a high standard. The musicians were given free camping in exchange for a song or two.

Nice country side location.

Other observations

The compost toilets had messages inside put there by the farm remarking on Tesco & Subway being very bad for the environment (selling cheap products that are bad / ‘expensive’ for the environment), however my wife paid for several lucky dip goes for our children from the farm shop and their prizes were plastic tat toys, how hypocritical!

I think we could of gone for the normal camping @ £6. 50 per adult and £4. 50 per child as we saw another farm field full of tents but even though we phoned twice before booking we were never advised by the staff members that this was an option. £14 extra to be pitched nearer a bonfire is really too much as there was nothing to stop us walking from the other field to listen to the musicians.

The farm shop is way overpriced nearly £2 for 100g bar of chocolate, £1 for a 30g bar….
Management response: We were obviously distressed to read some of the reviews about Church Farm Ardeley and thought it best to address the comments. Though unpleasant to read we don't get things right every time and value constructive feedback.

We are always more than happy to answer any queries direct so we can try to put things right. Please just email Emma or Tim at info@churchfarmardeley.co.uk.

Unsupervised bonfire ~ there is always a member of the farm team around all evening, however to make identification of staff easier we now wear high vis jackets. Parents are expected to supervise their children the entire time they are on the farm details of which is handed out in the camping notes on arrival, on signage around the farm and on the website) we do expect this to include not letting your child play with or near the fire. Sadly some parents don't seem to care what their children do. However, we have taken on board the comments and now a metal fence surrounds the bonfire so no one can get near to it.

Pitching your tent a safe distance from the bonfire ~ we are happy to help anyone with advice on how far is a safe distance to pitch a tent from the bonfire and on busy weekends we now have someone on hand to help with such enquiries.

Free Activities ~ The activities with are free at the farm are a small woodland area, a play park in the village, an indoor play room, activity sheets, walking around the whole farm and seeing the animal. Car parkingis also free. The face painter was a local girl just starting up her business and having a go at one of our events. Both this and feeding the animals is optional.

The Loos ~ Yes we grossly underestimated the amount of compost loos we needed on the busy weekend, which is totally our fault. The loos were checked but evidentially not enough- this has been taken on board and the toilets are now being checked three times a day- swept, toilet tissue top up etc. We have also made more loos so this problem should not occur again. We are really sorry about this and hopefully have rectified the situation for future events.

Yes the main loos are 15 minute walk from the furthest point on the farm.

Shelter Marquee ~ we do tend to only put up a shelter marquee if the weather is due to be really bad, rain being more of a concern rather than sunshine especially when the shelter is only used in the evening and primarily for the musicians. Sorry if you were misled. We will amend our website to reflect this.

Signposting to play area ~ comments noted and we will put up more signage to make it clearer for visitors

The Shower ~ Yes the shower is very basic and I think the advice is right about taking it out of use and just saying we don't have one. We are working on improving this shower unit, retiling, plumbing etc which will hopefully happen soon. We also wish to build a proper shower block, though estimates are in the £1000s..

Rubbish ~ We ask that campers leave the farm as they find it, ie rubbish free and that they simply take their rubbish home with them rather than dumping it with us to dispose of (it costs us £200 a skip to get rid of rubbish).

Sadly we pick up no end of rubbish, broken glass, food packaging and other undesirables as mentioned in these posts. This weekend our neighbour had two skips loads of rubbish dumped on his drive and another villager delivered a sack of rubbish he had picked up from the surrounding lanes.

Ay advice on how to manage the rubbish issue would be gratefully received, because it is really upsetting having other peoples mess left at what is our home.

Other observations ~ "The compost toilets had messages inside put there by the farm remarking on Tesco & Subway being very bad for the environment (selling cheap products that are bad / 'expensive' for the environment), however my wife paid for several lucky dip goes for our children from the farm shop and their prizes were plastic tat toys, how hypocritical!"

The plastic toys in the lucky dip were donated to Rural Care which provides training and work experience for people with learning disabilities and/or mental health issues at the farm http://churchfarmardeley.co.uk/education-a-care/rural-care.html). The co-farmers attending Rural Care wrapped the toys and the money raised goes to help Rural Care buy wheelbarrows, gloves and other useful item for the co-farmers. We have made a sign to explain this to customer so there can be no future misunderstanding.

"The farm shop is way overpriced nearly £2 for 100g bar of chocolate, £1 for a 30g bar.." The Divine bars of chocolate which we sell in the shop costs £1.95 and one £1.87 ( we charge the RRP). The same bar is available at Tesco for £2.00 and Sainsburys £1.99 according to My Supermarket. The smaller Montezuma's chocolate bars are 3p less direct from the Montezuma's on-line shop than we charge in our shop. There are also cheaper sweet options also available in the shop.

We try to be as competitive as possible, price checking our meats, eggs, fruit and veg to supermarket finest and organic brands and price match when we can.

Prices for the campfire weekends ~The prices on the campfire weekends include the cost of the bonfire, making it + the musicians playing. It is only the Saturday night when the price is higher. We light the fire and start the music earlier now to accommodate the younger ones.

It would be difficult to manage a two tier rate on that night, as the comment on the review highlights there is nothing to stop people paying the lower rate and going along anyway, which would be unfair to those who have paid the higher rate.

On the weekend of the 20th the other "field full of tents" was a private booking.

We do check our camping rates against other sites and feel we have pitched our prices competitively, if not slightly cheaper than other sites to reflect the limited facilities on site (ie showers, loos and electrical hook up).

Private Events & Vehicle Restrictions ~ good point about vehicle restrictions for private parties, we will certainly look at putting something in place.

Sadly that weekend there were some really horrible people who left litter everywhere, drove their cars around at night and then scarpered first thing in the morning. We got the number plate but no luck in finding who they were. Since then we have put security on for the camp under the stars nights, charge a deposit when people check in so that if any complaints are received about rubbish, noise etc they can be dealt with and refunds given to people who are disturbed. Our personal mobile number is also handed out on the camping guidelines when people check in and says to call us if there are problems and we will come up.

Thank you for your feedback and we are constantly trying to improve.

Kind Regards

Alex

We arrived on a Friday afternoon and left Sunday. When we camp our priority is space and quiet. Not 5 star facilities.

The camping area is large and spacious with drinking water in 1 corner and 2 compost toilets in the other corner.

The whole site is very relaxed with plenty for the kids to see and do. Largish animal enclosures with well cared for animals. Our only proper criticism is that the food they sell for the livestock is too expensive.

There is a shop on site where you can get essentials and a pub directly outside the gate that does excellent food.

We didn't find the compost toilets particularly offensive.

Similarly, I don't think peoples negative comments about the aircraft noise particularly justified. Certainly didn't keep us awake.

All in all an enjoyable place to stay

So much of this site was good, but a bad nights sleep due to other campers's amplified music pretty much cancelled out all the good things for me. I'm sure this doen't reflect every night spent here, so the good points:

-Lovely rolling countryside location

-Clover filled field - lovely comfy sleeping

-Fires wherever you camp (we picked a spot on the field next to an existing fire pit), and good wood available in the shop.

-Really excellent food from the farm in the farm shop (Although prepare for the prices to match)

-Feeding the animals surrounding you on the farm

-Big spacious site

Our field had a single pit toilet, and a couple of water taps. We didn't come across the showers, but for only 1 night we didn't look for them either.

It was a huge farm - perhaps the answer is having a quiet field and a party field to camp on, please.

We stayed just for one night in a tent and appreciated the lovely countryside as well as the nearby pub and shop facilities in the campsite. Unfortunately the one shower cubicle available is in a portacabin. This portacabin floor was filled with muddy water from the previous user(s) and yhe shower dribbled hot and cold. It overflowed onto the floor and created a pool of water which you then had to try and get changed over. It was appalling. We also had to move our tent in the dark after the field which the shop assistant had directed us to turned out to have sheep in at the bottom of the field where we hadn't seen them while pitching our tent. It was a fiasco. The compostable toilets were adequate. Remember to take your own loo roll. The location near Stevenage was also good.

Had a fantastic weekend on a sunny weekend in May. A huge camping field which was relatively empty. Lots of space for kids to play and most camps enjoyed open fires. The site is on a working farm and the owners invite you to feed / visit the animals.

The camp field only had two (compostable) toilets so not sure how great they would be if the field was busy! They were absolutely fine whilst we were there though. The flushing toilets and shower??? were about a 15 min walk away do be prepared to use the compost ones!

We did a gorgeous 8 mile walk from the farm passing through the villages of Bellingham, Walkern and Ardeley. Finished with a pint at the Jilly Farmers - a fabulous pub.
