After stopping here in June 2014, we decided to visit again this year, They have chopped most of the hedgerows down around the perimeter of the campsite which made it feel private. This in turn has made the fields feel boggy if it has rained previously.
The toilet/shower block in 2014 looked as if they were going through some renovation, this seems to have stopped and is unfinished.
The walk to the shops is just over the road so no problem there. It is a shame that work seems to have stopped on the important things that campers look for in favour of chopping hedges and gardening. Previously I have given this campsite 8 1/2 stars, now due to lack of work in the shower/toilet blocks and chopping of the privacy hedgerows I would only give it 6 stars.
Pro's:
Close to the shops and Fairbourne beach. Barmouth only a couple of minutes away by train or Ferry.
Cons: Toilet/showers blocks still unfinished after 2 years, no hand dryers or paper towels to dry your hands after using the toilets.

Visited this site for 4 nights, especially after the reviews. We left wondering 'how on earth can this site get such good reviews'?
The toilets and showers were very tired, and needed modernising, or at the very least, a good clean out.
The ground was very boggy, to the extent that medium to large sized motorhomes should have been advised not to enter.
The village of Fairbourne kept us occupied for the 4 days, with a decent pub, good beach for the children, and of course the miniature railway. Good point is the small bar and restaurant at the top of the street. Excellent food. The Indian restaurant is very expensive.
An ideal village to go on and visit nearby Barmouth, via the superb local ferry services.
However, this site was not ideal for our motorhome and we will NOT be going back

This has to be the cheapest site to stay at around this area, it's position is good, very close to train, bus and local shops. A short walk to a fantastic beach and a bit further to beautiful dunes.
The local pub is a bit doggy (in my opinion) which had a male stripper on the weekend we were there!(may be a plus point for some)
A very nice walk in to Barmouth using the railway bridge or over the sand dunes with a short ferry crossing over the river (£3 return £2 one way)
Also the blue lagoon (old flooded quarry) is about 1 mile away. Google it and visit it you won't be disappointed.
The Site - we arrived 30 minutes after a down pour and the site was water logged, we pitched at the highest point we could find, but although we had no more rain for the 5 days we were there the ground was still a swamp when we left, beware!
Toilets and showers were not great but perfectly usable and mostly clean, one of the shower cubicles was used as a junk dumping room which look unprofessional.
The showers had plenty of hot powerful water but the shower head was of a fixed type and it sprayed directly onto the back of the shower door which was also where the only hooks for towels and clothes were fixed. Just a bit of thought and a few screws would improve things vastly.
The owners were very friendly and helpful. Just a few improvements and this could become a very good site but at present it lacks some refinements but then again it is cheap.
So in my opinion if you are camping on a budget and willing to make a few compromises this site is ideal, but if you expect the best look elsewhere but be prepared to pay.

A small, relaxed site convenient for Fairbourne beach.
We visited as a family with a toddler in a tent with EHU.
On arrival we had a warm welcome from the site owner and given a choice of pitches. Our first impressions on the look of the site weren't great with a scruffy gravel area on one side and a car on blocks next to a caravan on the other - but we were pleasantly surprised when we were shown the rest of the site which is made up of several smaller grass fields. The site is actually very pretty and some lovely mountain views. The facilities are basic but sufficient. The toilet block has separate ladies/gents ends with loos, hand basins, a couple of showers and a washing up sink. The showers were hot and free, but are wet rooms with nowhere to put your bits; towels, clothes etc just some hooks so a waterproof bag is needed. Getting changed in a puddle is also challenging so shorts are useful - outside the shower room was cold and muddy floor (due to wet weather) so not ideal. It was a bit odd that there wasn't a washing up sink apart from in ladies or gents. The hot water tap didn't work in the gents washing up sink or so my haunted me! I'm also told there were no mirrors in the gents so shaving was tricky.
The site is mainly long stay/seasonal caravans but very friendly and chatty and not crowded together. It's nice not to be in regimented rows. We were one of the few tents on site but didn't feel out of place.
The site is a good location for facilities of Fairbourne. The mainline station is right next to the site with trains every couple of hours. Handy and easiest way for a trip to Barmouth. One day we took the train there and walked back via the little ferry by the quay. A fairly long walk with our shopping and toddler, but flat and pleasant waving to the steam train on the way.
The Fairbourne miniature steam railway starts just a couple of minutes away from the site entrance and lovely to hear the little engines tooting during the day. Several shops - a couple of general stores, a butchers, a chippy, launderette and Indian restaurant are also right by the site. The chippy was good, open limited hours, was a bit slow but very tasty food. The Indian restaurant had got good reviews but we weren't impressed by our takeaway with tough meat and watery sauce.
The beach is about 1/2 mile from the site. It's an amazing beach, but pretty windy. There aren't many facilities up by the beach just a bar/ small amusements. Unfortunately it was too cold and wet to do more than have a quick walk on the beach for most of our stay.
We did manage a walk up to blue lake in the old quarry in the hillside behind the village despite the rain. Only a mile or two but a bit of a hike up the hillside (especially with a toddler on your back!), although a wonderful hidden gem when you emerge from the little tunnel leading to it.
Apart from the beach, walks and Barmouth, there isn't much close by. One day it rained heavily we ventured to Llanfair children's farm near Harlech. Even though a bit of a drive and quite small our toddler loved it. There are animals such as rabbits, goats and ducks you and feed and rabbits to hold. There are also lots of games and toys to play plus an indoor play barn.
A very friendly site and would have been a great location if the weather had been good enough for spending days at the beach!

A hidden gem! We arrived in bits and drabs and the final number in our party was 18. Everything was made very easy for us and we ended up taking over an entire field of the camp ground. Lots of electricity, good level camping and great facilities. Large showers with endless hot water and a great area with hand basins and a huge mirror ! Large 'washing up' sink too. Lots of books to borrow/swap. Teresa was a star, she didn't flinch when I called her a few days before our arrival to add in a couple more tents and an extra night to the booking. On the morning she left she came to see us to collct the fees. The fees - worth mentioning. VERY reasonable. She's a lovely lady.
Great location too, some of us rode the Mawdac Trail which is within easy access of the camp site. The others drove to the rail bridge and walked across into Barmouth. The weather was a bonus, not too Welsh at all.
I think we cleared everything up on our departure, leaving only footprints, taking only memories. I would definitely recommend Ynys Faig and would most certainly visit this site again.
If you're looking for the all singing all dancing, site with night caberet convenience store and amusement arcade go further up the coast to Taly Bont or similar. If you're wanting everything you need presented in an understated and rustic manner, then Ynys Faig is for you.
Why pay more?

The location of this site is superb. Right next to Fairbourne station, right near Fairbourne light railway and and there's an amazing collection of great little shops selling everything your average camper needs. The Indiana cuisine restaurant has unbelievable food, one of the best curries we've ever had. The site itself is a field divided into 'rooms' so it's pleasantly private without seeming too remote. We stayed an extra night and will definitely go back. Only a couple minutes up to the beach and a whole collection of cycling and walking opportunities. The whole area is beautiful.
Toilets and showers were ok. Water temperature on the showers seemed a bit variable. No shop on site but really you don't need one. We had to ring when we arrived to be sited and also had to ring them to pay - very relaxed approach. Could do with a few more signs, just for the newcomers like us!
There didn't seem to be much for the kids but then with the beach just up the road and also a good playground they probably don't need anything actually on site.

Went to Ynys Faig with no real knowledge of the area. Lots of residential caravans and everyone seemed friendly with several regulars giving us advice onto where to visit including the Blue Lake in the quarry above the campsite only 20 minute walk and absolutely beautiful. The owners of the site are fantastic and went out of their way to help use even lending us poles for a dodgy awning and rewiring an electric hook up so some friends could set up next to us. The facilities on the site are great plenty of loos and hot water in the shower blocks, no problems with the electric hook ups or drinking eater. The site is right next to a train station with very reasonable prices for family tickets up and down the West Coast and there are ample facilities in Fairbourne village including a launderette, butchers, amusement arcade and several grocery/food shops. The only disappointing thing really was the cost of the small train that runs you to the equally expensive ferry (small motor boat) would have cost in excess of £38 for a family of four to get to Barmouth and back - compared to £6 on the local train service for the same trip. All in all a brilliant site in a nice location. Oh yes and the beach is fantastic if not a little windy!

Great site, we turned up and rang the number on the notice board at the entrance, a very friendly lady cycled in to show us around the site to see which field we would like to pitch our tents on.
We chose the one near to the toilet block, which had more shade in the evening. She advised us on how to get to Barmouth, what times the trains ran, and how to get to the Blue Lake.
Depending on whether you would be bothered by the road noise or not really decides which field you should pitch your tent on. Every hour you will get the signal from the level crossing. The field towards the back of the site would be quieter, if this would bother you too much.
The site is kept clean, and the showers work really well.
The only downside to the showers was not much space to put your clothes whilst having a shower.
It looks like the owners are in the middle of re-furbishing the shower/toilet blocks at the moment, so could take this into consideration. Also some hand dryers would be useful.
Not much for the kids to do on this site, however a short train ride from Fairbourne to the next station will take you near the Arthog outdoor activity centre, which has pony trekking, etc.
We chose this site due to the fields being flat.
Will definitely being stopping here again.

Nice and quiet site, level ground for your pitch or tourer, tariffs for the site have got to be the lowest in the area, a real bargain imo, owners very helpful and friendly, all the basics you need for camping, no fuss. There is a couple of shops, a curry house, a pub/hotel which serves good food and a great butchers a minute away. Mountains and the blue lake one side, great beach the other.
What more do you need?love it
