Ocknell has now become one of our favourite sites, we had stayed at Holmsley before so were familiar with Forest holidays.

The friendly wardens checked us in and we were free to choose any pitch that was vacant [note that the site has no electric hookups}. We were surprised how quite it was as it was half term week.

We pitched at the far end and had views directly across to the New forest, we were lucky enough to have a Pony and her foal walk past us as we drank our coffee as the ponys and cattle are free to roam the site.

There is only one toilet block and no showers, it was a good 5 min walk to the toilet block but worth it for the views. The toilets were kept very clean and had soap dispensers. There is also an outdoor washing up facility behind the toilets. Plenty of water points and chemical disposal points.

Our daughter did not mind not having a playground as there is lots of space to cycle and play ball games and she loved seeing all the wildlife. Lovely walks through the forest, only very slight negative was that you can hear the road noise but still one of the nicest sites we have stayed at.

Have used Ocknell camp site several times over the last few years for weekend camping / cycling breaks, usually Friday evening to Sunday lunch time(ish).

The site has great access to many trails for walking and cycling. There's nothing close by so if you're looking for a shop or pub then you'll need transport. The site itself (as are other Forestry Commission sites) is sited on an old World War 2 Airfield - RAF Stony Cross, you can still make out the lines of the runways and the hard standings are still there.

The site never seems that busy and the toilet and shower facilities are fine. The on site wardens are always helpful. If there's one thing that let's the site down it's the proximity to the main A31. You can just make it out in the distance and whilst not over powering, you are aware of the background traffic noise.

The Forestry Commission sites provide good value and the on site facilities as detailed are usually to a good standard.

We stopped here for a 1 night stopover on our way home up north, and our feelings were mixed on arrival! We arrived at 1.30ish pm to find the office closed with a sign saying 'closed 12-4 please find a pitch and then come and book in after 4.' Having never stopped at a Forest Holidays Site before we didn't realise that you make your own pitch as there are no marked pitches! so we moved a total of 3 times! Before opting for the Glades down near the bottom.
WOW! Have never stayed in such a beautiful peaceful scenic location! Wasn't overlooked by anyone, only the passing Donkeys and Ponies! First time we have gone without electric hookup but it was fine on 12v and gas!
Didn't visit the toilets as we had our own and it was a very short stay so can't comment but I know they don't have any showers! no on site shop, very basic campsite but the location is worth it! Didnt feel very secure though as barrier is only down at 10.30pm till 7.00am and you can drive straight off dual carriageway 2 mins down road and enter site unannounced!
We all agreed we would love to go back but the lack of security will probably stop us. Sadly in this day and age this site really needs a barrier in operation 24/7 operated by a code (so no keys to lose!) or a £10 security deposit for a key! It could also do with CCTV near the entrance and wardens in residence near the barrier during the day! The wardens were very very nice people, and they are doing a wonderful job managing the two sites and patrolling the areas as often as they can!
Forest Holidays nightly cost is quite expensive compared to the ccc club sites we have stayed on and apart from location they do not offer anything to justify this cost in terms of facilities. Okay for a short stay if your not going to leave the site, but I would be worried about leaving my possessions here if going out for the day!
Fantastic for the kids to play in the woods and make dens etc. Some marked walks / nature trails in the woods would be nice as although it is nice to just be able to explore at your own freewill, it is very easy to get lost as we found out

Not particularly impressed with this site, ok for a night, but it is very noisy and people don't seem to have any idea of how far 6m is from their neighbour. The caravanners that turned up just after us, very nearly took the front off our van as he manoeuvred into a space so close to us that we could hear every word they were saying. Does anyone else feel that the New Forest sites are now too commercialised and expensive? We live in the Forest but like to get out at weekends and these sites are handy for a night. However, having said that, I do object to losing my over 55 discount during the high season and having to pay a concession fee of £2 if we only want to stay one night. Forest Holidays may do well to remember that they may have thousands of people visit their sites during the school holidays, but they only stay a couple of weeks a year. People like us who use the sites regularly throughout the year, appear to be forgotten in the melee of the school holidays. A lot of people I have spoken to feel that, with the forest sites being so big, an area for adults would make a big difference. Rant over.

We stayed here for 3 days mid week in July. The site was very empty which was a bonus and we could get a great pitch in a clearing all to ourselves.

Ocknell is a pretty level site which is close to the A31 (not the M27 as some other reviews have said). You notice the road noise a bit but it does not intrude. One thing to bear in mind is to make sure you leave before the A31 starts (i.E. Junction 1 of the M27) since there are no other exits otherwise and you'll drive right past the site but won't be able to turn off!

A tip - bring rock pegs. Lots of them. You won't get a normal peg in the ground. If you forget you can buy them at reception.

Facilities wise this site is more basic then most but the price reflects that and its great for a few days. There's a toilet block with loos and sinks only, plus washing up sinks round the back. Dotted around the site are water and chemical disposals.

The area around the site is great for walking and playing with the kids. There's a large open plain right next to the site - ideal for balls games and kite flying and setting the kids go wild. Although there are no pubs close by a walk of about an hour brings you the Fritham where the excellent Royal Oak pub is situated. Great beer and really quick food service. Other pubs are also a close drive away and you're close to other parts of the forest and a short drive from the beaches of the Solent.

Overall a good site for a few days camping. Come mid week is you want it quiet, bring wet wipes and dry shampoo and you'll be fine :)

Well placed fairly quiet campsite which suffers from the A31 road noise if the wind is in the wrong direction.

Facilities kept clean but it is remote if you need a shop or any kit, then you have a drive of several miles to Lyndhurst or Ringwood.

No electric hook-ups so its basic camping but good fun here.

We stayed at Ocknell for 5 nights in late July arriving on a Wednesday to find the site very quiet and peaceful even though every other site we had tried to get on within the New Forest to be fully booked.

The main reason we thought was that Ocknell has no shower facilities but when the weekend comes its a different story. You cant move with the place turning into party central.

We had found a great pitch when we arrived, tucked away in a secluded corner of whats known as the glade, which is away from the main areas and more suited to tents rather than motor homes or caravans, surrounded by hedgerow and trees on the edge of the site with an open view over the forest, until Friday night that is and then every bit of space was taken up with an array of partly erected tents, gazebos and smokey disposable Barbeque's and people parking cars everywhere and paying no notice to the pitch spacing rules what so ever.

The toilet facilities, up until Friday, had been very clean with wash basins that you would have no issue in using, however over the weekend they became littered with toilet paper all over the floors the sinks were used to wash just about everything in it seemed including a very muddy dog on one occasion and there was no hot water for washing up in outside in the proper washing up area.

Then Sunday arrives and peace returns once again, that is except for the background drone from the nearby M27 but this is not all that bad.

All in all a great basic site with some wonderful walks in the forest during the week but be warned the weekends seem to be a different story, oh and one last thing if your pitching a tent the area is known as stony cross and believe me rock pegs and a steel mallet are essential, you wont get normal pegs in the ground and if you don't have enough the site office sell spare ones.

We made a spur of the moment decision to camp on the New Forest and, on finding Roundhill full (was a sat eve), were advised Ocknell was the only Forest Holidays site with spaces left.

Its a pleasant heathy site and, my hubby informs me, an old WW2 airfield hence the concrete. It was busy but not too tightly packed with a relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff, even at the end of a busy day! Only shame was a £1.50 admin fee for a one night booking, rather took the shine off the C&C club discount, but then we have only recently started camping again so have yet to know fully what we will get for our money. And it still only came to £10.50 for 2 adults and a tent.

We found the ground flat but bumpy and stony so take a good mallett and sturdy pegs. Worth getting there early if you want a pitch with a view or away from the concrete aprons. I imagine it is ideal for those with caravans/ campervans. Toilets were clean and nice but yes, a bit of a long way from the furthest pitches, but at least it was flat. Showers would make this site more attractive. No problems for those with kids I imagine as there is so much forest to play in. Made us wish we we could get away with building a den again! I should say this isn't strictly allowed but no one was checking and no great harm done I'm sure! Road noise from the M27 was always there in the background but not too bad I dont think. Oh, and make sure you have something to raise BBQs off the ground as the wardens ahd already given out their supply of stones/ bricks and we couldn't find any lying around for our cheapie disposable BBQ.

We didn't ask about milk/ freezer extras as we were fully stocked but there are petrol stations not too far away at Landford on A36 and Services on M27/A36 junction if the local store at Bramshaw is closed.

If you are heading south west on the M27, be aware that you cannot cross the A31 dual carriageway to access the site so if you are going that way, make sure you get off the M27 at Junction 1 and follow the signs to Ocknell. It is a pretty long way down to Burley and back up if you miss it!

As for the wider area, as well as the Forest itself, its well worth going to Braemore (Fordingbridge - Salisbury road) to look at the River Avon (swans, ducks, trout etc) and former mill as well as the disused but delightfully renovated railway station seen from the bridge. A must for enthusiasts! Mottisfont Abbey (National Trust; on the A3057 Romsey - Stockbridge road, roughly 10 miles, maybe less) is beautiful and allows picnicking on the lawns which is lovely. Plenty of benches and also a golf cart type buggy driven by cheery staff for those who need a hand getting around. It also has a beautiful river walk along the Test and a gorgeous rose garden.

We would happily visit Ocknell again but probably only for a night due to absence of showers. Perhaps some of the other New Forest sites are a tiny bit more picturesque but we weren't disappointed.

We stayed at Ocknell in April when we had that snow! 'that was fun' as we were trying out our new trailer tent. We had a great weekend and had a fantastic time.

The facilities are really basic but the toilet facilities were mainly very clean.

Ponies and donkeys roam the site and We saw deer.

The staff were really helpful and friendly. We took our dog this time which worked really well. I would definitely recommend the site if you like basics.

We stayed at Ocknell over the August bank holiday weekend and had a fantastic time. Whilst the site was busy it was by no means overcrowded and we had a generous pitch.

The facilities are really basic but in a way it was just nice to get away from it all. Our children loved it (aged 6 and almost 2) and the 6 year old rode her bike and had made about 3 new best friends within an hour of arriving.

No showers and basic toilet facilities - but they were mainly very clean. The only criticism was that the soap ran out very quickly so take your own when visiting the loo.

Despite being large, the site was quiet which was ideal for us. There is lots of hardstanding areas but we pitched on some grass and took plenty of rock pegs with us which worked a treat.

What makes the site really magical is the wildlife - the new forest ponies and donkeys roam the site and the fields next to us which was fantastic. We saw deer and rabbits too as well as many different birds.

The staff were really helpful and friendly too. We took our bikes which worked really well. I would definitely recommend the site - just take a solar shower with you or go swimming a lot at the fab pool in Romsey which is what we did!
