We made a last minute decision to go away from Saturday-Tuesday during school holidays so rang around and Ocknell was pretty much the only bookable site we could easily get to which had spaces. Like some of the other reviewers we did find it a bit difficult to find a space even though we'd booked, however we went in the rally field which was being used as an overflow area. I actually think this is the nicest bit of the site as it's a secluded woody field surrounded by forest and no hard standing, whereas the rest of the site has lots of concrete - wide roads / hardstanding with quite narrow grassy areas alongside for tents. Because of this I'd say this site is probably better for caravans or motorhomes than tents. The ground is also very stony so you might need a few spare pegs. It's less in the forest and therefore plots are less sheltered and secluded than some of the other New forest sites, though I think Long Beech is more woody and has less hardstanding. While it was busy when we arrived, by Sunday evening it was very quiet and by Monday we had the whole rally field to ourselves which was fantastic for our kids to have such a huge play area and to be able to venture into the forest where we saw a herd of deer just a minute or two's walk from our tent. Being the New Forest there were also lots of ponies wandering around the site too which was great for the children (not so good for the family next to us who'd left food inside the tent and came back to find their tent had been ransacked by wildlife!) The toilet block is clean and adequate though I don't think I'd want to stay for more than 3 days at a site with no showers. The toilets are also a bit of a trek from some parts of the site - can be a bit of a pain with children as I felt it wasn't safe to let them go on their own when it was busy as there were too many cars. Another downside is that it's fairly near the main road to Southampton so can be noisy at night. Again Long Beech might be better as its a bit further from the road. The staff were friendly and helpful, especially the lady - don't know her name, but she made us very welcome! You can't have your own ice blocks frozen but can hire them for 30p a day and I think there was a deposit of £2 per block. They also sell UHT milk at the reception. If you have a barbecue you have to have it raised off the ground & I think they are sometimes banned during very dry periods (not this summer!) when there's a high risk of forest fires. I thought it was quite good value - around £42 for 3 nights during peak season. The site is easy to get to - well signposted and has easy access straight into the forest or to nearby towns.

We have been going to Ocknell for three years and have always thoroughly enjoyed it as a cheap and cheerful alternative to the bigger sites. It has no facilities apart from toilet blocks, (no showers) and the ground is very stoney, a total nightmare for pegging. However this has always been made up for by value for money and beautiful countryside, until now that is. Our first visit, 3 years ago cost £8.50 a night for a family of 4 and 2 dogs, last week the same party cost £17.50 a night! I repeat there are NO facilities. When I questioned this I was told by the very pleasant and somewhat embarassed staff that it was because the camping and caravanning club had taken over.

This camping area is not as secluded as I thought, but it was a busy bank holiday weekend. We got to the site about 9pm on the Friday evening to struggle to find a spot, they suggest you stay 20 feet away from each other, which everyone tried to respect, even though it was very busy. There is no separate area for tents, so you will be amongst the caravans. Toilets were clean at all times, and hot water is supplied at all sinks inside the toilets as well as the washing up area, even though the site was busy there was never a queue for the toilets or washing area, I guess this was partly due to people who have caravans. I would be happy to go back to this site as it was clean, not too noisy and all children were very well behaved. The gate to the site is locked at 10pm-7am, so no cars in or out at those times, which personally we found a little restricting, especially as we were not sure if our tent would survive the bad weather conditions. Do take plenty of sturdy pointed tent pegs, the cheap ones that came with our cheap tent all snapped in half, due to the stones in the ground, but the spares I took made light work of it.

We stayed at Ocknell for our first ever camping trip. We arrived mid-Saturday afternoon and had trouble finding a pitch. We ended up right by the road, which with 2 young children is not ideal. We had a problem with tent pegs but a trip to reception solved this - they had some for sale. Facilities were clean and easy to find, adequate for our needs. There are lots of places to visit in the area, and pony watching kept our children amused. Ocknell would not be top of our list for our next camping trip, simply because it has no showers, though we would be happy to use it again if we were unable to book another site.

August 2004 We spent the Bank Holiday weekend here (Ocknell) and it was also our first ever camping trip! Campsite is fine, the available facilities are clean and AOK, but the facilities are sparse (Toilets/Washing/Water/Waste). A stay longer than a few nights would require showers. The only reason we stayed here was due to the fact that I had left it too late to book anywhere else! But as we were on a "sightseeing" weekend and only sleeping on site, the facilities were adequate for our stay.
The site is easy to get to from the M3/M27, and there is some road noise, but this is only obvious first thing in the morning and late at night, when the site is quiet. Staff were friendly and helpful - and offered advice to us first-timers! Other campers were friendly and there are plenty of roaming cattle and ponies - just wish I had left my kids at home - they were the only reason it was spoilt (teenagers you see. )

Spent a weekend here. As we pre-booked we were very disappointed when it was a case of find your own spot if you can. The site was packed by the time we got there, we spent an hour looking around and eventually found a spot, ended up putting the tent up in the dark. We did not expect this due to booking in advance. The ground was very hard and bumpy, bent quite a few pegs. Take your own toilet roll. Apart from the above had a good time. Nice to see ponies wandering around, will visit again and hopefully find a better plot.

A lovely, basic site that I have stayed a a few times. You really do get aways from it all. Despite it being a fairly busy site you still have lots of space and you really are in the heary of the new forest with lots of walks around the site. The ground is a problem and tent pegs just don't go in as it is so stoney.

The camp site itself is very nice but the biggest gripe we found was the pitching of the tent. The ground is not only rock hard but very stony so therefore trying to get tent pegs in was virtually impossible. This was a problem that everyone around us was also having. We were just glad it wasn't a windy w/e! For this reason alone, we probably wouldn't come back to this site again.

We weren't planning to stay here but Sandy Balls was fully booked when we arrived, so Oknell was the nearest option. I'm glad it turned out that way as SBs looked way too commercial for our liking.
Oknell is very basic with no showers but the toilets were always very clean. We had lots of space to pitch our tent and even some strategically placed bushes to offer a bit of privacy. The site is right in the NP with ponies and cows wandering freely.so make sure you secure your food well!
The site appears to be run by a family and the staff were very friendly. The only downside I can think of was the noise coming from the main road. Having said that it didn't disturb us in any way, it was just a constant background hum.
One final note: for a shower head to SBs and use the showers at the swimming pool.
All in all, a good but basic site.

We went to the Ocknell campsite for 3 days. It's a great site. The washing up facilities are good although they can get busy as there are only three sinks. The toilet blocks are good with plenty of toilets. The majority of the time they had toilet roll, but there was the odd time when they didn't, so be sure to take a roll with you, just in case.
The pitches are great sizes, but they can be rocky (especially when the weather is as dry and hot as it has been), so take plenty of spare pegs. There are horses that roam the site (and we even saw a cow a couple of times as well) A word of warning - there is a mare that has a young foal wandering around the site at the moment. We saw the mare rummaging around in some bags that people had left outside their tents and on one occasion when someone tried to stop her, she did bite them (obviously at the moment she's being extra protective of her foal) The only reason I am saying this, is that young children (and old) should be cautious.
Overall I was really pleased with this site and think that it is a good price. I will definitely be going back at some point and also am looking forward to trying out other Forestry Commission sites.
