 We have just returned from a very enjoyable visit to this campsite, ideally situated to explore all that Essex has to offer.
It was a nice pitch, a tidy site, don't forget your hammer though whatever you do, the ground was very giving at the first inch of peg then wouldn't go any further without the hammer (don't forget your peg puller too!) The wardens made us feel very welcome, our dog too. Explained about the showers and toilet facilities etc. There were a few other campers around, one family, one couple visiting one of the caravanners and a dad with his little lad, so nice and quiet just how we like it.
At the moment the museum is closed, but we weren't there for that anyway. There is a lovely little garden area in front of the owners house with a brick built BBQ that we were told we could use if we asked for the trays etc which were stored for safekeeping, but no problem to use if we wanted.
The shower (only one at the moment) was fairly hard work, but not the worst camping shower I've been in by a long shot. The wardens worked very hard to keep it clean and tidy too. Don't forget your 50p pieces as that's how it operates, but that gives you plenty of time and it's hot every time in our experience, the hardest part is that it takes an age for the water to drain away so you think you're going to be flooded, but the far end where your clothes are (it's like one long room with the shower at the far end) is upbank enough to keep you dry whilst you dry and change.
The toilets were ok as far as I was concerned, always paper in there, always some warm water, always some paper towels to dry up with and like I said, they worked hard to keep it clean and tidy.
There was drinking water at the same point as the toilet block with a sink, but only cold water there, so work out some way of getting some hot water for yourself (we used the kettle) if you like to burn your scrambled eggs like I did one morning!
If you like to dine out and like top end gastro pubs, you must go to the Bell Inn, in Holden on the Hill, it's about a 10 minute drive (maximum) and is one of the best I've been to, one website someone mentions a michelin star (it may be their own, I can't remember!) However, let's not get too carried away, they've a long way to go before a star gets handed to them. That's not to say it wasn't some of the best food we've had in a pub in a while, and the pub itself was great. So go there, if that's your bag.
Dog walkers, there's a nice little fort about 15 minutes drive away in East Tilbury, right on the Thames, that is pretty nice for a stroll round with pooch. Also South Woodham Ferrers has a place called Marsh Farm Country park. You can pay what looks like a fortune to go in with the kids, but there seems to be plenty on offer for what you pay, or you can simply walk around the country park and along the Thames, it was lovely
Back to the campsite, once the other campers had left it was idyllic, like we'd stolen into a lovely field to camp alone as the tent area is slightly shielded from the caravans by some cultivated bushes. The tent area backs right on to a corn field, which farmer had cut, this means midges ants and the like aplenty so take some repellent, it wasn't overbearing but you're close enough to the field wherever you pitch. Having said that, it means you wake every morning to a fantastic view of that field and no buildings other than the line of pylons running across, but you sort of block those out nowadays.
We paid a lowly sum of £44 for four nights with electric hookup, which although we were told there may be a trip or two as it was low ampage, we never managed to make that happen with a light, heater, coolbox and phone charger going all at once (yes yes, glamping is sad, I know)
I consider that a real bargain, and if as promised they upgrade the toilet blocks and shower facilities shortly, they'll probably have to charge more, but it will still be worth it.
Highly recommended.

Me and my family spent many hours looking for a camp-site to be able to use whilst we were visiting family and we decided to camp here. I have to say we were very pleased with the staff they were very helpful. We arrived on the site and were met by Don and his wife who were very nice and helpful they showed us around the site and gave us lots of information to. The facilities were very clean and well maintained my children were most pleased with the play area. The site itself was well located near to local shops and train station. I would recommend this camp-site to anyone who is looking for a nice clean and quiet camp-site and cant wait till next year to go back as we are definitely booking there again

We returned to this site after using it quite a lot in past years when it was a Museum. We had not been back for couple of years due to changes in our lives. It was a need to visit Essex that prompted a return visit.
It was everything we needed again, Ladies + Gents loo, shower, washing up + recycling area.
Easy access, good price, and great situation for visiting South Essex and Thurrock/Lakeside.
The hard-standings (new to us) made it nice not to have to level-up and were nicely spaced. Electricity was handy for this trip.
The wardens did a good job on the phone and on arrival on the site.
There were a few large family tents in the special tent camping area and if you were a mixed unit party I think that wouldn't be be to much of a problem as you park just the other side of their divide.
There were lots of children staying with no problems to us.
We can't wait to return as it is a good base with peace + quiet if you wished.
No shops in walking distance but there is in the next village short car/bike ride.
We hardly noticed the lorries passing by either.
I marked facilities 9 as there is only 1 loo for each sex and someone hogged it for having a wash- not sites fault + we didn't make a fuss.

Along with our three young children, my husband and I had a mostly enjoyable stay. The site is pleasant with large pitches and excellent play facilities for the children.
The Warden was very informative and showed us the facilities, however, we found the facilities somewhat limited - this was disappointing given the excellent reviews.
There was only one shower which you had pay an additional 50 pence to use and, on the field we were in, there was only one ladies toilet which was hidden round the back by the elsan point. Unfortunately, during our stay, this toilet was not adequately cleaned and, along with my daughter, I was forced to use the only other remaining toilet adjacent to our field.
We were also a little taken aback when, upon arrival, we were asked not to use our normal household kettle as the site only has 6 amp power.
Washing up was also problematic as there was no hot water.
Despite the above, the field was well kept and the site itself was quite picturesque with a large area in the middle for children to play in. Whilst we were not over enamoured with the site, our children had a fantastic time.

We stayed at walton hall on saturday the 14th july for one night, It was our first ever time towing a caravan anywhere.
On arrival we was met by the warden who helped us set up which was a great help, he then showed us around the site.
The site was very clean and tidy, the showers and toilets were spotless. When it was time to leave the warden came over and checked that everything was ok,
This is a great site and would recommend this site to friends.

Arrived on Saturday to be met by the wardens. A lovely warm greeting and thorough explanation of the site and the situations of the showers and toilet facilities, which were clean and well tended to. The site has a lovely play area which we know our children will enjoy when we take them on our next visit. We were informed of the locations of closest pubs and restaurants(although we didn't use these as were visiting friends in Southend). The site is well enough away from major roads to be relatively peaceful, just the odd plane and train in the background. I can honestly say that it's a little gem and helped to make my first camping trip a thoroughly enjoyable one. Many thanks to the wardens for all their assistance and information. Keep up the brilliant work and see you soon.

Having been owners of a motorhome and changing to a touring caravan, we chose Walton Hall Farm as our 1st caravan camping experience and what a great choice we made.
We chose this site as we wanted hardstanding after all the rain we've had, plus electric hook-up.
We were welcomed by the joint warden as we arrived and escorted to our pitch, where her husband came and gave us helpful support as we had a go at reversing onto our pitch then they then proceeded in telling us all we needed to know about the site ie toilets, shower, playground for our grandchildren, waste disposal, everything we needed to know and more, which was all very helpful.
The park was spotless, along with loo's and shower, grass mowed, playground safe, what more could we say.
We only stayed one night but when we were ready to go the wardens came and said goodbye. We will definitely return, the site is not far from Southend, Canvey and Lakeside.
Just an all round enjoyable experience as our 1st weekend as caravanners!
