Beautiful location - right on the River Stour. We were lucky to get a pitch in a great spot in the sun right on the river. Two rope swings for the kids to play on which go right over the river.

The men's toilets were never particularly clean but my wife said the ladies were perfectly acceptable. No showers on site. River is moving so no real risk of Weil's disease; from the NHS website: 'The risk of contracting leptospirosis in the UK is so low you don't need to take drastic measures to avoid the condition'. So unless you are unwell or have a weak immune system, go for it - get on the rope swing and have some fun!

We did have some disappointment - on arriving we arranged to hire a boat the following morning. On arrival to get the boat there was a sign saying that the person running it had to go out for the day. We text and arranged to do the trip the following morning - on arrival the following morning there was another sign saying all trips were cancelled. That was really disappointing for our children as we have to leave that lunchtime. We did get a voice mail saying we could book that afternoon but by then it was too late.

There is a beautiful walk from the site to nearby Nayland (about 2 miles but totally worth it).

If you like beautiful scenery, don't mind a slightly messy toilet block and like peace I can highly recommend this site. We will definitely be back.

My husband and I found this a very relaxed and clean campsite.

Plenty of opportunity for river water activities, kayaking, canoeing etc.

The wardens, as described in other reviews are yes, very friendly and accommodating and the use of firepits is a definite 10/10 along with the park where you wish ethos.

A convenience store a 5 minute drive away and a retail park with asda, iceland and a go outdoors store about 15 minutes drive depending on the town traffic.

Which makes me feel a tad guilty to come up with some negatives.

After arriving on the Friday amidst glorious sunshine in our camper van we decided not to erect the awning as probably no need. After a pretty bad storm in the early hours of Saturday morning we decided to get the awning up enabling us to stay another night and hubby to do some fishing. When the warden came around to collect the fees for the Saturday evening he informed us that he should be charging us another £15. 00 for the awning. Making a night stay £30. 00.

A bit too much I think! as the site only has toilets, and a washing up area with 2 sinks with only cold water. Oh. And a chemical disposal.

The other thing that bothered me was the fact that children and adults where enjoying the water, whether it be swimming/fishing or boating. And there are no showers!

HAVE PEOPLE NOT HEARD OF WEIL'S DESEASE!?

I think a shower block with hot water is a must on any site that encourages use of the nearby lakes or rivers. Especially ones that expect £30. 00 a night for a camper and awning.
Management response: As one of the Site Wardens I would like to just clear a couple of things up about the last review just so there are no wires crossed & so people don't think we are outrageously over charging people.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the reviewer for the kind words about our little site, we are a very unique & basic site & do try to accommodate everyone & keep everyone happy. Not always an easy thing to achieve believe me! However the misunderstanding about the charging & how much it is a night was completely innocent & let me explain like I did to the customer at the time.

We charge £15 a night for a camper or caravan & a tent with 4 people in, anymore than 4 people it's an extra £2 a person a night. Any tent smaller than a 4 man is £10 a night. The reason why I tried to charge the customer another £15 for their awning on top of the £15 for the camper on the 2nd night was because if I remember, which I do, not only was it not attached to the camper it wasn't even right next to it therefore I thought it was a tent they had put up for the 2nd night. If it was attached to the camper which awnings are supposed to be I wouldn't of tried charging for it because as of this moment (Nov 2014) we do not charge for awnings. The customer was never charged for their awning once everything was explained & it was made clear it was their awning not a tent. This is the only time we have had this situation occur where an awning was not attached to a camper/caravan although I would now like to take this moment to point out that awnings need to be attached to the camper/caravan to be classed as an awning otherwise as from next season (April 2015) they will be classed as a tent & will be charged for accordingly. This is the way we charge for things & like what we say to people all year round on the campsite when we are collecting the money, if you don't want to pay for it don't put it up, we charge for what is up not for what you want to pay for.

I needed to respond to the review as it looked like I had charged £30 for a nights stay when even I would think that's a tad steep!

Also as for the river, it is probably the main feature of our campsite & most people come to use it in some way or another be it swimming, boating, kayaking or fishing but I would like to make it very clear we do not make you go in the river or do you need to camp anywhere near it! Yes we have riverside camping but we also have another field which is the other side of a hedge away from the river & even an overflow field which is even further away from it where you could camp for a week & not even see or go near the river. But I can assure you as a full time resident of the campsite for 6months of the year for the last 7 or 8 years between May & the end of August (when the weathers warm) I have not only used the river frequently for swimming I wash in that river pretty much every day after work & I have not once been ill or had anything wrong with me. Dave the other Site Warden, him & his family have been camping at Rushbanks for over 40 years & none of them to this day have been ill from the river. & as for Weils Deisese, if you read up on it you will know it is a very rare disease in the Uk & is more commonly linked with slow moving stagnant water, neither of which the river Stour is so it's safe to say you are not really at risk we just ask campers to use their common sense.

All of our facilities & pricing is very clear on our website & you can even ring the owner or email if you have any further questions or queries regarding our little corner of heaven that is know as Rushbanks Farm Caravan & Campsite.

Many Thanks

Tom (Site Warden)

 Stunning!

This campsite is a real gem given its location right on the bank on the River Stour. We spent last weekend with another family at Rushbanks and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and the campfire and the access directly onto the River for a gentle paddle in the canoe.

The site warden was very friendly and the facilities were clean and well maintained.

Highly recommended.

Can't believe there is only one review for this site as it is so good, maybe I should leave it at that to keep it our secret!

Just back yesterday from a Frid-Mon spur of the moment break, couldn't get booked on our first choise so ended up here, £12 a night with just toilets(3 of each sex) and 1 washing up area.

Very windy narrow road once you leave the A134 so be careful if towing a caravan.

The website images make it look like it's only one long strip of camping, whereas it's actually a lot bigger, you have the river bankside camping which has some permanent sited vans by the looks of it, then behind a hedge there is a long wide strip of camping which easily accommodates 2 rows plus driving space down the centre, this area is a lot quieter and less busy than the river side. They also have an overflow field which is quite large and was opened up on the Saturday night for a lot of one night campers.

The river side of camping has numerous landing stages and tree swings directly into the water which kept the children at the site busy all day long, a lot of swimming and activity on the river makes this site ideal for launching a canoe or dinghy, there is a footpath that takes you through the woods and countryside on a 2 mile walk to the nearest pub in Nayland.

The nearest shops are a car drive away, we had our bikes but took them to Sudbury for a good ride around the Kingfisher trail, plus we spent time at Sudbury Reggatta on the Saturday.

The 2 wardens that drive around on a golf buggy type thing are really friendly and helpful, they sell bags of logs for £5 and hire braziers for £3 or take your own as we did.

The leaving and arriving times are very relaxed so no need to rush in the morning, it is a first come first served basis for pitches as you can camp anywhere with no pitches marked out.

A lovely get away from it site, no TV, no computers, no traffic, just loads of fun mucking around in the water or sitting around doing nothing.

Would definitely go back but not bother taking the cycles this time, a dinghy would make more use of.

Accurate description on campsite website. Fairly basic facilities, toilets well stocked/fairly clean. Friendly and fun staff. One of the staff members, Tom jumped in the river to tow our little girl along in a dinghy down the river so that was very much appreciated. Can't complain about anything really. No showers, so expect to stink after a couple of days.

The only negative point was the staff removed the campers next to us for 'being too noisy late at night'. This was a shame as they didn't get a warning, they weren't making too much noise and they were very friendly towards us. Apparently a bigger party threatened to never come back if the staff didn't remove the 'noisy' people. This is a real shame. I think the staff here should have given a warning first rather than just removing these people who were apparently regulars.

The other slightly negative point was that someone stole our fire pit! I went to the loo after emptying the fire pit and left it propped up against the toilet block, when I emerged it was gone! Fortunately the staff were again very good and helped me find that someone had taken it - they were very embarrassed and promptly gave it back!

So overall it was a very pleasant weekend, we would recommend this site and will probably be returning soon. If the staff were a little more diplomatic it would be close to perfect.

One major plus point about this site is that it allows you to have a fire in a fire pit. Not many camp sites allow fires so we should all try and support ones that do. Having a fire is what it's all about really!
Management response: I am one of the two The Site Wardens here at Rushbanks Farm & yes I am Tom the one that jumped in the river to tow the two girls in the boat. This isn't a service we normally provide but it was quite a nice sunny day so I didn't mind.

I would like to thank John for the kind words about out quiet peaceful campsite but I would just like to clear one thing up about the people we asked to leave. The party in question are regulars & for the previous few weeks had caused us some trouble with regards to noise & were told when we collected their money if they gave us any trouble this weekend we would have to take action but they assured us we had nothing to worry about. We had actually spoken to them & given them 3 warnings over the course of the evening & on the last time two of them in a fairly drunken state were quite confrontational. We do not tolerate this kind of behavior or the amount of noise they were making at 11/12 o'clock at night when everyone else is trying to sleep. It was because of this behavior & the amount of complaints we received from other campers the next morning we took the action we have never done before, or since may I add & were asked not to return anymore. Something that is written on our camp rules that failure to comply with any of them may result in you being asked to leave. I will also say that before they left two of the party came to see us very apologetic & understanding of why we did what we did & have actually been allowed to return on the promise that they adhere to the few simple rules that are there to try & keep everyone else happy.

Again I would like to thank John for his kind words & like to invite everyone to try out our quite little campsite & I'm sure you wont be disappointed.
